Uses of Total Internal Reflection

By Felix

The Endoscope

An endoscope is a long, thin, flexible tube that has a light and camera at one
end. Images of the inside of your body are shown on a television screen.

Endoscopes use 2 sets of Optic Fibres from the control handle to the camera and light on
the end. One of the Optic fibres is used to power on the flashlight so you can get a clear
image of the inside of the body. The second optic fibre is used to communicate the image
from the camera in binary numerals so that it can be displayed on the screen in high quality.
This is very useful as it helps the doctor to visualise the human body without opening it up
and does minimal damage when going around the body. Its optic fibre core helps it bend
around tight corners and such has saved many lives by identifying many diseases and
avoiding life threatening surgery.
