drawn from decades of research in language
pedagogy and language acquisition theory.
• They are targets for teaching excellence and
should undergird any program of English
language instruction.

“Know Your Learners”
Teachers learn basic information about their students' families, languages, cultures,
and educational backgrounds
to engage them in the classroom
and prepare and deliver lessons
more effectively.
What does it mean to me?
• It’s worthwhile and necessary for me.
• I need to get to know all of my students in every class.
• It is the very first and indispensable step when I start a new
course.
• I can make decisions about teaching and assessment by
applying an understanding of the following learner

• Diverse Learner Profiles: Students come from various cultural, socioeconomic,
and educational backgrounds.
• Large Class Sizes: overcrowded classrooms/ online courses with high
enrollment
• Limited Resources: limited time, resources, and personnel available
• Privacy and Ethical Concerns: Gathering personal information about students
for the purpose of tailoring education must be done with sensitivity to privacy
and ethical concerns.
• Inaccurate or Incomplete Information
• Inadequate Training: Some educators may lack the training and skills needed
to effectively implement the principle "Know your learners
