Linear Functions
(a) y = 4x − 13,
(b) with slope 4 and passing through the point (2, 3),
(c) with slope −5 and passing through the point (1, 7),
(d) with slope 3 and passing through the point (20, −8),
(e) with slope −5 and y-intercept (0, 17),
(f) passing through the points (1, 7) and (2, 2).
(a) The slope of the graph of y = f (x) is 4 and f (2) = 3. Estimate f (3).
(b) The slope of the graph of y = f (x) is -5 and f (1) = 7. Estimate f (3).
(c) The slope of the function y = f (x) is 3 and f (20) = −8. Estimate f (19).
(d) The slope of the function y = f (x) at (0, 17) is −5. Estimate f (2).
(e) The line y = f (x) passes through the points (1, 7) and (2, 2). Estimate f (3).
(f) The line y = f (x) passes through the points (100, 70) and (102, 78). Estimate f (103).
5. Answers these two problems in the simplest manner possible, using your understanding of “slope”.
(There is no need to create an equation!)
(a) The line y = f (x) has slope 8 and passes through the point (1000, nine billion). Find f (1003)
and f (999).
(b) A line y = g(x) has slope 10. Suppose g(3) = one google. Compute g(2), g(4) and g(5).
