FOREWORD

02. A few points should be made about word order in
Russian.
In Russian, words are joined together to build a
complete utterance mainly by means of word forms. That
is why the following three sentences are correct and quite
understandable:
(1) На берегу рекй туристы остановились.
(2) Туристы остановились на берегу реки.
(3) На берегу реки остановились туристы.
One is likely to arrive at the spurious conclusion that
in Russian words may be arranged in a sentence arbi-
trarily, without any rules whatsoever. But this is far from
the case. There are various conditions limiting arbitrary
word arrangement in a sentence.
What are these conditions?
03. One obviously cannot say in Russian:
На остановйлись берегу рекй туристы ог Останови-
лись берегу реки туристы на, ес. ТБе preposition
invariably takes a fixed position before its head-word.
04. A thorough comparison of all the three sentences
reveals that their meaning is not the same. Only the
second sentence, and not the first or the third, can be the
answer to {Не дцезНоп Где остановились туристы?
The first sentence, which communicates different
information, is the answer to the question Uro cyénann
туристы на берегу реки?
The third sentence tells us about what happened оп
the river bank.
Thus, a change in word order involves a change in
the meaning of the utterance; therefore word order cannot
be changed at will.
05. Now let us imagine the following situation. A
friend of ours says:
— Я вчера был у тебя, но не достучался. Ты что,
ХОДИЛ В ГОСТИ?
A negative answer to this question may be as follows:
Нет, я не ходил в гости [Я был дома, но спал и не
слышал стука].!
If we change the position of the negative particle ne,
we shall get another answer: Het, a xomin we @ edcru
[ ав больницу к отцу.]
It is obvious that Бой {Пе апз\уегз, Я ходил не в гости
апа Я не ходил в гости, ме Беше Бо пераНуе, аге
1 Неге and hereafter square brackets [...] are used to introduce the
necessary context.
9
different in meaning. It is not accidental that the con-
tinuations given in square brackets are also different.
Consequently, the position of particles in Russian senten-
ces is far from arbitrary.
06. The seeming “freedom” of arranging words in a
sentence is also limited by the style of speech to which
the utterance belongs.
For instance, in poetry you may encounter attributive
adjectives placed after the nouns they qualify and even
separated from them by other words:
Белеет парус одинокий
В тумане моря голубом...
(М. Лермонтов)
In scientific academic writing a sentence with a similar
arrangement of an attribute and its head-noun would be
stylistically шарргоргае: Результаты исслёдования
экспериментального показали следующее. Спагас{ег1з-
tic of the academic style is the placing of an attributive
adjective before the qualified word: pesyapratbI aKcne-
риментального исследования.
In expressive and emotive speech the words which
constitute the informational centre of a sentence, i.e., its
rheme (for more detail, see Part I, Chapter 1), are not placed
at the end of the sentence (which is the norm for non-
expressive utterances), but at its beginning. For example:
BeauKkt yonéxu coppeméxnou meduuuno! (from a
newspaper).
Красиво бежит! (colloquial speech).
Что за прелесть эта Наташа! (Л. Толстой)
As is seen from the examples, inversion, which adds
expressiveness to the utterance, may occur in colloquial
speech, journalese and fiction.
07. Mentioned above were but a few factors affecting
word order in Russian and limiting arbitrary arrange-
ment of words.
Naturally, when choosing the correct word order, one
must take all these factors into consideration.
In the present work, all the factors affecting the choice
of word order are considered. Every theoretical, point is
accompanied by exercises, designed to help the student
to learn the rules determining the arrangement of words
in simple sentences, to understand the factors determin-
ing the choice of a particular variant of word order and to
develop his skill in correct word arrangement as applied
to various speech styles. (See Notes, I, p. 151)

WORD ORDER
IN NON-EMOTIVE SPEECH
Chapter 1
WORD ORDER
AND THE FUNCTIONAL SENTENCE PERSPECTIVE
и
tive features, about what he is. The sentence containing
such information will be built differently from the preced-
ing one:
Лев Толстой —автор романа «Война и
мир».
In this case the theme names a familiar person—the
subject of the message: /Jee Toucréu. The rheme gives
information about him: автор романа «Война
и мир».
003. As is seen, a functional sentence perspective
materialises in different word order.-
In non-emotive speech
the theme precedes the rheme.
13
представляла собой старинную
крестьянскую избу. Слёва, недалеко от входа,
стоял деревянный стол. На столё стоял
кувшин и кружка. Вдоль стены тянулись
лавки. В цёнтре избы располагалась бгром-
ная русская печь. Окнабыли маленькие,
подслеповатые.
`007. О оГ соп{ех{ зоте зе{ейсез тау Бе агаеа
into the theme and the rheme in two ways. Thus, not
knowing the situation in which the sentence Jlérom mpi
собираемся поёхать на Волгу was used, one can divide
it, first, into the theme szérom mot and the rheme
собираемся поёхать на Boaey as the
answer to the question Uro вы будете делать лётом? ог
Kakue y Bac mab Ha éTO? and, second, into the theme
лётом мы собираемся noéxarb and the rheme na
Boéaezy as the answer to the question Kyaa Bb соби-
paeTech NO€XaTb, JIéTOM?
To avoid any ambiguity, the sentence must either be
included in a context or be supplied with a question speci-
fying the speaker’s purpose.

4. Сын пришёл к отцу и ему рассказал обо всём.
5. Новый мётод позволяет деталь обрабатывать с
большой точностью.
6. Романы этого писателя всему миру известны.
WORD ORDER
IN PHRASES BASED
ON PARATAXIS
042. The adjuncts in phrases based on parataxis are
invariable words, i.e. adverbs, infinitives and verbal
adverbs.
Let us consider how these words are placed in relation
to verbs, nouns, pronouns and adverbs.
043. Jn relation to verbs:
(a) an adverb precedes its head-verb:
интересно рассказывал по-разному понимают
искренне радуется наполовину выполнили
по-дружески советуемся
Note!,, Placing an adverb after its head-verb invariably
enhances its semantic importance, turning it into
a rheme.
Compare: Ond замечательно поёт
русские народные пеёсни.
(The sentence answers the question:
Что вы знаете о ней?) ап@ Она поёт
замечательно. (Тре sentence
answers the question: Kak ona поёт?)
45
Note! (a) A number of adverbs follow their head-verb,
making up the following phrases with it: eoeopuro
по-русски, (по-английски, по-испански &с.) апа
а1з0 идти пешком, ехать верхом, плыть кролем,
смотрёть исподлобья.
(b) single verbal adverbs! are normally placed
before their head-verb, just as adverbs are:
сгбрбившись сидёл задыхаясь вбежал
не спеша рассказы- нагнувшись под-
вал HAJ
не переставая пишут кружась падают
(c) infinitives linked with their head-verb paratac-
tically are placed after it:
хочет работать пригласил noobé-
дать
велит прийти выучился произ-
HOCUTb
опасался опоздать начнём репетиро-
вать
46
(c) quantitative adverbs are placed before their
head-nouns:
почти поэт немножко формалист
вовсе глупость слишком педант
(d) infinitives are placed after their head-noun:
задание начертить мастер шутить.
удовольствие помочь охотник ‘поболтать
опасность простудиться манёра спбрить
Note! If the noun has both an infinitive joined paratacti-
cally and a noun which it governs, the latter is
placed before the infinitive:
| aan
задание начальника начертить план .
—=
манера Moeii MeHL CHOpHTs 10 NyctaKaM
Any violation of this rule gives rise to new syntactical
relations, not intended by the speaker, and leads to the
distortion of the meaning of the utterance. Compare:
задание начертить плён начальника

phrases based on parataxis (041-045) are giv-
en in this summary table.

THE POSITION
OF THE OBJECT
IN A SENTENCE
086. The position of the object in a sentence deserves
special attention.
An object can express the experiencer of a state (Mune
не спится)‚ {Пе receiver of an асНоп (Я получил письмо),
and an objectival-circumstantial characteristic of an ac-
Ноп (Я сдёлал эту раббту вмёсте с товарищем).
Irrespective of these differences the position of the ob-
ject in a sentence is determined by the rules for the ar-
rangement of the components of the functional sentence
perspective described above.
087. If the object functions as an extender of the predi-
cate, it becomes, together with the predicate, part either of
the theme or the rheme, i.e. it becomes part of the func-
tional sentence perspective to which the predicate belongs.
For example: Рассказал о случившемся старый
66uman. (The object is part of the theme.)
Сибирские селекционёры вывели новый сорт
пшеницы.
(The object is part of the rheme.) |
As is seen, an object can be either part of a complex
theme or part of a complex rheme.
As part of a rheme the object is placed after the
predicate in accordance with the rules for the arrangement
-of governed elements in verbal phrases. For example:
[Что дблает студёнт?] — Студёнт читает статью.
Студёнт готовится к экзаменам.— Стиудёнт
помогает товарищу.
There is no disintegration of the phrase.
An object may also constitute an entire theme or an
entire rheme.
Машину отремонтировали.
Он купил не машину, а мотоцикл.
Thus, among sentences incorporating objects one can
also distinguish five main variants of the functional sen-
tence perspective and, accordingly, five variants of word
arrangement.

WORD ORDER
IN EMOTIVE SPEECH
Chapter 1
' It goes without saying that in a book of the size of this manual it is
impossible to give a detailed description of the various types of emotive
speech or the expressive means. Therefore only a few types of emotive
speech will be considered below.
112
(1) «Тучки He6écuple!
Вёчные странницы!
Мчитесь вы,
Будто как я же, изгнанницы».
(М. Лермонтов)
(2) «Молчи! Устал я слушать».
(И. Крылов)
06. Stylised speech is characterised by various
stylistic nuances.
Stylisation is reproduction in speech belonging to a
definite style (or genre) of the most typical features
of that style (or genre) with the aim of creating a desired
setting. Stylisation is often used in fiction. For example,
the writer Alexei Tolstoy in his novel Peter J employs it
to create the historical setting of Peter I’s epoch. For
example:
1) «Гость с одобрительным любопытством погляды-
вал на сиё наполовину азиатское, наполовину евролёй-
ское убранство». (The lexical archaism cué means 3ro. )
2) <...приходилось собирать войско, воевать хана».
(Воевать кого-то 13 а grammatical archaism—-an
obsolete government of the verb; compare with the
то4егп воевать с кём-то ог прбтив Koe6-To.) Stylised
speech is always emotive.
07. Even the few preceding examples—paragraphs
04-06—-show that various language means and devices
make speech more expressive.
Among such devices word order and intonation play
a fairly prominent role.
08. Word order begins to play the role of a stylistic
device, i.e. helps to create emotive speech, when the rules
for arranging words in non-emotive speech are violated.
Deviation from the standards of objective word order
leads to subjective word order or inversion.
It is precisely subjective word order (inversion) that
makes speech expressive.
09. Inversion occurs in three cases:
(1) when the objective sequence of the theme and the
rheme is changed;
(2) when the sequence of the components of phrases
within the theme or the rheme is changed;
(3) when the order of the parts of the sentence in
indivisible utterances with a zero theme is changed.
(Combinations of the first and second cases and of
the second and third cases are also possible.)

QUESTIONS
FOR CHECKING COMPREHENSION
1. What kind of speech is called non-emotive?
2. What word order is called objective?
3. What speech is characterised by the objective word
order?
4. What speech is called emotive?
5. When does word order assume the role of an expres-
sive device?
6. What is subjective word order or inversion?
7. When does inversion occur?
Chapter 2
' Here and elsewhere T stands for “theme” and R for “rheme”.
114
component of the functional sentence perspective. Non-
contiguous word order can be graphically represented
in this manner: T—R—T or R-—-T—R. For example:
(1) [Я не тебя, —| я Машу зову.' (Т—В-—Т)
(Cf. the direct word order: 7 3s0ey Md wy.)
(2) — [Чем здесь так необычно пахнет?]
— Мхбм пахнет прёлым и грибами.
(R—T—R)
(Cf. the direct word order: Пахнет прёлым
мхом и грибами.) |
Note! There are also more complicated types of non-
contiguous word order (T—R—T—R or
R—T—R—T, etc.), but they do not differ
essentially from those given above.
! The sign’ shows that the rheme, which is not in its usual place, is
given prominence by intonation.
115
14. Compare sentences with direct and inverted word
order and note the similarities and the differences
between them:
(1) Охота была удачная.
(2) Удачная была охота!
They are similar in the following:
(a) the vocabulary of both sentences is the same;
(b) their meaning is the same; both sentences answer
the same question: Kaxdsa была охота? (ог: Ну, как
охота?);
(с) consequently, their functional sentence perspec-
tive are identical; the composition of the theme and the
rheme remains the same: the subject is the theme and the
predicate the rheme. However, the two sentences
differ in:
(a) their word order;
(b) the intonation they are pronounced with;
(c) their stylistic nuances.
15. In the sentence (2) YVOd@4Haa Ouad oxoral!
the part of the sentence (a compound nominal predicate)
which functions as the rheme is placed first. The positions
of the nominal part of the predicate and the link-verb
have been reversed. The subject (the theme), placed first
in the sentence (1) Охота была удачная, 1$ пом
relegated to the end of the sentence. The word order in
the second sentence is, therefore, inverted.
16. Sentences with objective (direct) word order
are characterised by a “neutral” narrative intonation,
in which the theme is pronounced with a slight rise
of the tone, and the rheme with a fall of the tone.
The stress in the rheme coincides with the usual phrasal
stress:
Охота была удачная.
In sentences with inverted word order the rheme, ©
shifted to an unusual (first) place, is made prominent
by emphatic stress, while the theme is pronounced in a
low tone almost without stress and it nearly “disappears”
in pronunciation:
Удачная была охота! ,
17. The inverted word order with its accompanying
unusual intonation lends an expressive nuance to the
second utterance. Unlike the first sentence, which is
stylistically neutral, the second one is perceived as
emotional.
18. Two very important conclusions can be drawn
from the preceding comparison.
116
19. THE FIRST CONCLUSION:
Two utterances with the same vocabulary but with
different word order are contrasted as_ stylistically
neutral and emotive only when they are identical in
meaning, i.e. do not differ in their functional sentence
perspective. Example:
[Где отёц?] — Oréy yé- The meaning Каз not
хал. changed.
[А где же отёц?] — The stylistic nuance has
Убхал отёц! changed.
‘20. In all other cases- rearrangement of words
involves a change in the meaning of the utterance and
in the functional sentence perspective, but not in its
stylistic nuance. Example:
[Где отёц?] — Oréy The meaning has changed.
уехал.
[Кто уёхал?] — Уёхал The neutral stylistic nuance
oTré y. has not changed.
21. THE SECOND CONCLUSION:
Inverted word order cannot by itself determine the
functional sentence perspective. It does it only with the
help of a special intonation characteristic of emotive
utterances. ,
Note the different intonation of the two answers to
the same question [de oréy? given below:
Отёи уехал. Уёхал отёц!
(1) The tone is lowered at, (1) The tone is lowered at,
and the stress falls on, and the stress falls on,

rheme has moved to.
(2) The rheme is given but (2) The rheme is given

Chapter 3
INVERSION IN PHRASES
| Yn olden times this word was used (in popular parlance) in address-
ing, or speaking of, one’s father.
134
56. Phrases with inversion are also encountered in
colloquial speech. For example:
(1) Надовли мне разговоры Эти!
(2) [— Что вы купили?]
— Сервиз чайный купйли.
57. Sometimes, when inversion takes place, only one
of the agreeing components is placed after the head-word,
the other (s) preceding it. For example:
Весёлый майский день привётливый...
58. The placing of adjectives used as attributes after
the nouns they qualify is considered the norm in the
formal and business style in phrases which are composite
terms or nomenclature items. For example:
ромашка садовая, шалфей лекарственный (патез
of medicinal herbs in a chemist’s display case),
кофе натуральный,
скобы желёзные.
Thus, the placing of an adjective after the word it qua-
lifies in phrases of this type is a characteristic feature
of the formal and bussiness style.
59. Note! || The placing of adjectives with agree-
ment after the principal component of a
phrase is very frequently encountered
in the following cases:
1. Шахматов — учёный крупный и раз-
носторонний.
2. Елена — девушка умная..
3. Туризм — дело полёзное.
4. Бал — вешь хорбшая.
In all the preceding examples the predi-
cate (which is the rheme) is in effect
a phrase whose main meaning is largely,
expressed by the adjective, since the nouns
(учёный, Оёвушка, Оёло, вещь) have
rather a general lexical meaning and,
therefore, convey little information. Com-
‚раге: Елена — умная; бал — это хоро-
mo. In addition to the preceding nouns
here belong such words as myocutina, wcéx-
щина, человек, парень, etc. The meaning
of all such nouns in similar instances
is close to that of pronouns.
60. The governed component of a phrase with inverted
word order is placed before its head-word:
Compare:
поют песни песни поют
135
плывёт к бёрегу к бёрегу плывёт
увёрен в себё в себё увёрен
букёт цветов цветбв букёт
Examples:
(1) Коля кокну подходит.
(2) Бабушка сказку рассказывает.
(3) [Если хотите,] приёмник слушать мб-
жете.
(4) А он стакан протягивает.
61. Such a word arrangement is characteristic of nar-
rative parts of texts written in the colloquial style,
especially when the narration includes enumerations. For
example:
(1) Bd6ywxa сказку рассказывает, внук
полочку выпиливает.
(2) Бабушка носбк вяжет, сказку рас-
сказы вает.
62. Such a word arrangement is also characteristic of
folklore—tfairy-tales, epic ballads and songs. For ex-
ample:
(1) Дёвумкипесни поют, венки плетут.
(2) Стали девушки хоровбды водить.
63. Therefore, the stylistic nuance arising from this
type of inversion can be defined as a colloquial-narra-
tive expressive device or folkloric-poetical stylisation.
64. The word order in phrases consisting of a prin-
cipal component and a paratactic adverb also can be
inverted.
In such a case adverbs of measure and degree joined
paratactically to other adverbs are placed not before,
but after them. Compare:
очень сложно слбжно очень
совсём не больно не ббльно совсём
слишком дорого дброго слишком
65. This type of inversion is characteristic of col-
loquial speech.
In fiction such inversion serves to reproduce informal,
colloquial speech. For example:
— Слушай, а в Доме Чёхова ты был?
— Не был, а что (...) — Давай, старик, поедем, —
предложил мой друг. — Я люблю Чёхова, знаешь?
Как-то яего н«ёжно очень люблю. (Ю. Казаков)
66. In nominal and compound verbal predicates
the position of the nominal part or the infinitive can
change vis-a-vis the link-verb or the conjugated verb
form:
136
Compare:
был ранен ранен был
будет первым пёрвым будет
хочется пить пить хочется
начинает жало- жаловаться начина-
ваться ет
For example:
1. Я тогда офицером был, служил на wre.
2.— Пбмнится, Тбнечка, хотёла ты дальше учиться?
— Обязательно! Инженёром автодо-
рожного транспорта хочу быть!
— ожи-
вилась дёвочка.
67. The emotive nuance arising as a result of such a
change in the word order can be defined as colloquial.

151
of the word) which is the common feature of the various bookish
styles opposing them to colloquial, poetic and folklore speech.
It would be also possible to oppose “stylistically neutral” speech
to “stylistically coloured’’ speech; however, these definitions seem to
be less precise. This is due.to the fact that the concept “stylistic
colouring” or “nuance” includes two aspects: the functional stylistic
and the emotive ones. Thus from the functional stylistic point of view
scientific terms do have a stylistic nuance. This reveals itself in par-
ticular when comparing such lists of words, for example, as eodd,
рука, ходить, xopowd, on the one hand, and eunorenysa, edxyym,
6anauc, on the other.
At the same time all the preceding words are neutral from the
point of view of their emotiveness.
Hence, to say that the word gonéma or eunorexny3a is stylis-.
tically neutral would be inexact. Likewise it would be also inexact
to maintain that the norms of word order described in Part I of this
book are characteristic of stylistically neutral speech since these
norms are typical of bookish speech, that is the codified literary lan-
guage.
In this sense they characterise speech bearing a functional sty-
listic colouring. These are the speech genres found in academic,
official and business, and journalistic styles.
The aforesaid explains why, in this work, we have chosen to
oppose emotive speech to non-emotive speech.
Il. As is known, in modern literature there is no common approach
to the functional sentence perspective.
We believe that the functional sentence perspective must be dicho-
tomous. :
In our opinion, this is not contradicted by the existence of utter-
ances with a zero theme since in such cases the zero is meaningful.
Nor is it contradicted by the concept of a multistage nature
of the functional sentence perspective. In the case of a multistage
sentence perspective its components can, in their turn, be subdi-
vided into a secondary theme and a secondary rheme. This tendency
may find its manifest expression in particular within the rheme.
Specifically, an increasing dynamic tension can be observed within
а гнете: Изобразительное, орнаментальное искусство/существует//
давно.
However, we believe that this division by stages of the theme
or the rheme takes place in their further, as it were, “deeper” ana-
lysis, just as in every variable word we first single out the stem and
the inflection and- only then can we distinguish the different mor-
phemes in the stem (provided this stem is a derivative one). However,
for certain purposes it is quite sufficient to stop at the first stage
of this division. The same principle can be applied when establishing
the basic norms of word arrangement for the first level of the functional
152
sentence perspective—distinguishing the theme and the rheme with
all the components dependent on them.
With such an approach, there can be no “intermediate” elements—
no “semi-theme” or ‘“‘semi-nucleus”.
When lingtists single out such components, they proceed from
the assumption that some parts of the sentence by virtue of their
position form part of the nucleus (the rheme) though by their lexi-
cal meaning they stand for something given, something mentioned
in the preceding context.
Hence, the concepts “thematicity” and “givenness” (the “theme”
and the “givenness”), just as the concepts “rhematicity” and “newness”
(the “rheme” and the “new”’), do not always coincide. For example:
Мой брат лётчик, недавно он вернулся из очередного. рейса. Неге
the word’ ow is part of the theme of the second sentence and at the
same time it stands for the thing “given”. But there can be a different
case. If some letter has been mentioned in a narration and then the
hero’s actions are described and finally the following is reported:
Михайл yetdea nucomo, this should not be taken to mean that the
part of the sentence nucomé should be regarded as part of the theme
solely because the letter has already been mentioned. The purpose of
this utterance is not to report yeudea, but rather yeuden nucomo.
Consequently, the “givenness” of this part of the sentence does not
prevent it form becoming part of the rheme. One more example:
ITpedcraéeste ce6é, npodéccop cxasda: «fla». — On coenactaca! The
second utterance does not convey any new information at all as
compared with the first one; this, however, does not mean that it
does not have a functional sentence perspective of its own. This
utterance is formed in such a way that it reflects the functional
sentence perspective with the theme ow and the rheme coezaciiaca,
though here again it is possible to contend that both the person (or,
rather, the indication of a person) and the action are something
given, known from the preceding context.
We think it essential, therefore, to warn against a complete
identification of the theme with something “given”, and the rheme
with something “new”. Their coincidence is merely one specific case.
The theme is the topic of the message (irrespective of the fact whether
it has already been mentioned or not), the “point of departure” of the
utterance, to use V. Matezius’ words, whereas the rheme is the message
(concerning the theme) itself.
Ш. Just as linguists fail to agree on their approach to the
functional sentence perspective, they also disagree on dividing sen-
terrces according to their functional perspective. Let us illustrate some
of these disagreements and comment on their approach.
(a) The problem of whether the link-verb of a nominal predi-
cate should belong to the theme or the rheme is controversial. For
ехатрЕе: Он был лётчиком (1$ the theme on or on Gotan? Is the rheme
был летчиком оглётчиком?).
This issue has been specially considered in I.P. Raspopov’s
monograph. I.P. Raspopov writes: “...in sentences with a nominal
structure the link-verb is always a mere intermediate connecting
link between the preceding components, but it cannot form part of
either of them.” Thus I.P. Raspopov suggests a third solution of
the problem under consideration: a link-verb does not form part of
either the theme or the rheme; it merely links these components.
This solution does not seem convincing enough for the following
reasons:
First, if a link-verb is merely a connecting link between the
11—o19 153
theme and the rheme, why does this link appear only when the rheme
is represented by a subject and the theme by a nominal predicate?
Why is the presence of a “connecting link” not obligatory in other
cases, where the theme is immediately attached to the rheme? For
example: E26 26n0¢ 3eyuda Tuxo, no reépdo. Evidently, the link-verb
is an element of the constructive and not the communicative level
of the sentence. Consequently, the role of a link-verb in shaping
predication is indispensable not to correlate the rheme with the theme
as such, not to build a sentence as a communicative unit, but to
form one specific structural type of sentence (provided its predicate
incorporates a noun or an adjective), to correlate the subject with
such a predicate. The role of a link-verb used as a “connecting link”,
which has been mentioned by I.P. Raspopov, is characteristic of it
just when it connects the subject and the predicate, i.e. structural
elements of a sentence.
Consequently, when proceeding to another—communicative-syn-
tactical—level of analysing a sentence, we see that the link-verb forms
part of one of the components of the functional sentence perspective:
Boa tixuk avaéruud eéuep (ci: Taxut anéruud eeé-
4 @ p)—the link-verb forms part of the rheme, the theme is a zero one,
the whole utterance is indivisible with a zero theme. Дёвочка была
такой упрямой не случайно. (с{.: Девочка такая упрямая не
cAy4aino)—the link-verb forms part of the theme, the rheme is
не случайно, the purpose of the sentence is to tell why the girl
was obstinate. ;
In cases where the borderline between the components of the
functional sentence perspective coincides with that between the subject
and the predicate, the question of whether to relate the link-verb to
the theme or to the rheme is solved in this book as: follows: the
link-verb forms part of that component of the functional sentence
perspective which incorporates the nominal part of the predicate.
For example, of the theme in /Tépevtm был Михайл, ог 9 Че
rheme ш Михайл был népeotm. Such a solution follows from the
role of link-verbs: “From the point of view of their structural and
syntactical role in the sentence there is practically no difference
between a simple verbal predicate and a link-verb”!, Hence, the
functional sentence perspective in the preceding examples is identical
with the following: Лидйровал Михайл ап@ Михайл лиди-
ровал.
Denying the role of a link-verb as a word shaping a correla-
tion between the theme and the rheme, we ascribe that role to the
category of affirmative and negative modality. Let us clarify this
point. When the sentence Croanxy evi6panu ydd4uxno (which is
the answer to the question Kax eeibpaau crosnky?) is divided into
{пе {Нете стоянку выбрали апб {Пе гпеше удачно, this statement
is placed in this paradigmatic row: Crofuxy выбрали удачно—
Стоянку выбрали неудачно. \МПеп 41е зещепсе Солнце спря-
талось за тичу 13$ дм14ей инфо Фе 4Нете солнце and the rheme
спряталось за тучу, it is placed in this row: Césnye cn pa-
талось ‚за тучи ап@ Сблице не спряталось за тучу,
ес. If the 1аНег зег4епсе, Солнце спряталось за тучу, were the
answer to the диезйоп Куда спряталось солнце?, { моша Бе дед
differently: into the theme cdznye cnpATanoch and the rheme 3a
154
ry4y. Then affirmation/negation would shape the link between just
these components; consequently, the sentence would enter a different
paradigmatic row: Céauye cnpiranoce 3a тучи апа Солнце спря-
талось не за тучу
(b) As for the communicative-syntactical types. of sentences (i.e.
sentences from the point of view of their functional perspective) and
the variants of word order shaping these types of sentences, their
number and very nature vary with different linguists.
; The solution offered in this book is the nearest to the patterns
given in the preceding study by I. P. Raspopoyv. There are, however,
some essential differences.
The most important distinction lies in the fact that for us variants
of word order have served as the point of departure and the determin-
ing factor in distinguishing types of sentences from the point of view
of their functional perspective, not the other way round, as is done
in I. P. Raspopov’s work.
We proceeded from the fact that a similar arrangement of parts
of the sentence (with identical stylistic speech nuances) presup-
poses the identity of these sentences from the communicative viewpoint,
i.e. their identical division. In other words, we proceeded from the form.
Therefore, in our opinion, such sentences аз Лрекрасной дочерью
своёй гордился старый Кочубёй and Серьёзное чтёние утом-
Asxao e26 cannot be regarded as belonging to the same type (unlike
the above-mentioned work), since they differ both in their word order
and stylistic nuances.
Of course, the variants of word order outlined in this book
do not exhaust all the diversity of word order patterns in simple
sentences. However, we thought it possible to restrict ourselves to
those variants since, first, they are most widespread, basic and embrace
most cases; and, second, the remaining cases will represent merely
a combination of the cases described or their variation, but not basically
new variants.
For example, we have distinguished the following variants of
word order: “an adverbial modifier of place + the predicate ++ the
subject”, “an adverbial modifier of time + the predicate + the subject’’:
B aecg pasdasdaca rondp дровосёка and Утром
pasdaeadacs 36yKx Tonopa. A combination of these two types
is possible: both the modifiers are placed at the beginning of the
sentence and are followed by the predicate and the subject: Yrpom
в лесу раздавался звук топора.
(c) Thus, the volume of indivisible utterances is understood
differently. In I. 1. Kovtunova’s opinion, for example, not only sen-
{епсез 0! Ме Подплыло ещё несколько запоздавших
лбдок type, but also those beginning with determinative modifiers
of place or time the type BcymepKu npowyméa 30 OKHaMU
короткий майский дождь. «В разных рейсах ме-
няется состав людей, меняется их внешность
и их сущность ог Сегодня праздник» аге тшамяЫе. 1
Commenting on the role of such determinatives in the sen-
tence, P. Adametz calls them “situational backstage’: “Semantically,
adverbial modifiers introduce various purely modifying (situational)
characteristics, not resulting from the valency of the verb and pro-
viding some spatial, temporal, causal, final or some other ‘backstage’
for the verbal action.”’?
1 Ковтунова И. И. Ор. сИ., рр. 30-31.
2 ibid, p. 32.
155
Together with 1. P. Raspopov, we consider sentences with a
situational modifier to be in all cases divisible and regard the modi-
fier as part of the theme!
1.1. Kovtunova considers such sentences to be divisible only
when “the modifier is something ‘given’ in the proper sense of the
word. If all the parts of the sentence represent something ‘new’, the
sentence is indivisible’ (ibid).
Thus, in 1.1. Kovtunova’s opinion, the sentence B это врёмя
paspastiaace eposda is divisible since the modifier implies
“the given” (@ ro epéma), whereas the sentence K eéuepy pas-
разилась гроза 15 ша Ще зтсе the modifier in it represents
something “new” (x eéwepy). We, however, believe both these sentences
to be identical from the point of view of their functional perspective:
1. If the ftinctional sentence perspective is to be considered
a syntactical phenomenon (which is the opinion of the majority of
linguists), there must exist some formal means of expressing this
functional sentence perspective. Word order and intonation are just
such formal means. In the cases under consideration the word order
and the intonation are quite identical.
2. It should be noted that the problem whether a sentence is
divisible or indivisible becomes controversial only when the initial
adverbial modifier—‘“a situational backstage’’—is followed not by the
subject, but by the predicate + the subject. The latter word order means
that the utterance following the initial adverbial modifier renders some
fact as a whole. The difference between these sentences and the
indisputably indivisible ones, which have no initial adverbial modifier,
lies only in that this fact (rendered as a whole) is included in some
temporal, зраНа|, ес. зИиаНоп. СЁ: На пристани разгрижают
баржи. — Разгружают баржу.
The initial position of this adverbial modifier shows that, from
the point of view of the speaker, it is the starting-point of the utterance:
he begins by stating this “point” as if affirming its presence, its ex-
istance: K eéyepy paspastaace epo3sd.—Hactrynta @é-
чер, ог к вёчеру разразилась гроза. Нете, ш the initial
adverbial modifier, precisely because it is the starting-point of the
utterance, something that is given as a matter of fact, something that
exists at the beginning, lies a hidden predication. It is clear to the
speaker (and this is borne out by the initial position of the modifier)
that there is a landing-stage (npucrane) in the town. He proceeds
from this “point”, reporting that Ha npiucranu разгружают
баржу. It is in this that indivisible utterances differ from divisible
ones; they have no such “hidden predication’, they convey their
message as an integral fact.
The preceding explains why such sentences answer questions
of a general nature: Yro npoucxddur? (What is going on?) Yro uméer
mécro? (What is taking place?) Yro caywizoce? (What has happened?),
etc. (Possible answers to such questions take the form of either indi-
visible sentences or divisible sentences of the type under consideration,
1е. МИНИ ап ма] тод®ег: Разгрижают баржиуог На пристани
pasepyxdwr Oadpoey). Since the initial modifiers are not
necessarily “given”, named in the foregoing context, the person asking
the question does not have them in mind; the speaker may mention them
for the first time, but he mentions them as something that goes without
saying in the light of the fact reported further on: Buepd в клубе
156
университёта состоялась встреча студёнтов с груп-
пой космонавтов. Утром по радио передавали сводки
погоды, ес. ,
3. If we were to check this with the help of the category of
affirmation-negation, which shapes the correlative rheme and theme, the
sentences under consideration would produce a picture identical to
that observed in all divisible sentences:
(1) Работа/закончена. — Работа/не закончена.
(2) Он шёл/быстро. — Он шёл/не быстро.
(3) На зарё Филипи/уёхал. — На зарё Филипп/не уёхал
(не уезжал).
(4) На пристани/разгружают баржу. —На пристани/
не разгружают баржу.
4. The preceding analysis is yet another proof of the fact that
the first component of the functional sentence perspective—the theme—
is the “starting point” of an utterance, i.e. something from which
the speaker (writer) proceeds; this “starting-point” may denote either
something already “given”, ie. known, to the listener (reader) or
something “new” to him, but known to the speaker (writer).
Thus we consider it possible to regard sentences with an initial
adverbial modifier as divisible into a theme (the starting-point of
the utterance) and a rheme (the reporting of some fact).
IV. In this work, only the word order in simple sentences is
dealt with. This is accounted for by the fact that the problem of
word order in compound and complex sentences has not yet been
sufficiently studied. Each type of compound/complex sentences has
to be studied separately before a summing-up description of the norms
of word order in compound/complex sentences can be given in the
way it is done for simple sentences.
Below we shall restrict ourselves to a few general remarks
on this problem.
(a) Each clause of a compound sentence in terms of its. fune-
tional perspective constitutes a combination of a theme and a rheme
just as. in the case of a simple sentence. These components are distin-
guishable already at the first stage of the functional sentence perspec-
уе. Еог ехатр/е: Солнце склонилось к закату, и путники решили
заночевать.
(b) A complex sentence is divided differently. Its functional
perspective is a multistage one: at the first stage it falls into a
theme and a rheme, as in the case of a simple sentence, and at the
