West Bengal (Paschim Banga) is a state in
the eastern region of India along the Bay
of Bengal. With over 91 million
inhabitants, it is the fourth-most populous
state and the fourteenth-largest state by
area in India. Covering an area of 88,752
km2 (34,267 sq. mi), it is also the eighth-
most populous country subdivision of the
world. Part of the Bengal region of the
Indian subcontinent, it borders
Bangladesh in the east, and Nepal and
Bhutan in the north. It also borders the
Indian states of Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar,
Sikkim and Assam. The state capital is
Kolkata, the third largest metropolis, and
seventh largest city by population in India.
West Bengal includes the Darjeeling
Himalayan hill region, the Ganges delta,
the Rarh region and the coastal
Sundarbans. The state's main ethnic group
are the Bengalis, with the Bengali Hindus
forming the demographic majority.
Three independent countries share their
boundaries with our state. Nepal is
situated North-West part of West Bengal.
Bhutan is situated North-East part.
Bangladesh is lies between North-East to

South-East part of West Bengal.
5 neighbouring state situated arround our state. Sikkim lies north part of West Bengal; to be north-
east there is Assam. Odisha lies to the south-east and southern part. to the west and north-west part
Bihar share boundary with West Bengal. Jharkhand situated Western part of West Bengal.
Jharkhand share longest state boundary with our state and (approx 500 km) and Sikkim share
shortest boundary with our state (approx 65 km).
Bangladesh share longest country boundary with out state (Tin bigha corridor, length 2212 km).
This boundary is situated Makliganj in Cooch Bihar district.
The most narrowest part lies in Chapra of North Dinajpur district. It is also known as Corridor as
Chicken neck of India.
Position of West Bengal
 West Bengal lies between 21° 38' N Latitude (North part) to 27°10' N Latitude (South
part). Our state situated between 85°30' E longitude (Western part) to 89°53'E longitude
(Eastern part).

 The tropic of cancer (23 ଶ °N) across Nadia (Krishnanagar, Dhubulia), Purba Burdwan
(Guskara, Purvasthali), Paschim Burdwan (Panagarh, Asansol, Durgapur), Bankura
(Durlavpur) and Purulia (Adra).
 Size: Area of West Bengal 88752 sq. km, which is 2.67% of India's land area.
