Every July 28 and 29, Peru dresses up for the celebrations

of the Fiestas Patrias where one more year of the country's


independence is commemorated. During these dates
different activities are also carried out and the President
of the Republic issues his traditional Message to the
Nation in Congress.
The Independence of Peru is a historical fact that marked the
beginning of a new stage in the country and because of this every
year citizens celebrate the National Holidays.
These days appear as holidays in the Peruvian calendar and are
used by people to make trips, walks or have a short vacation,
because a sector of the population paralyzes their daily activities.
With the passage of time, new customs and traditions have been
added as part of the celebrations for the National Holidays. So we
have, the parades, trips, tasting of typical dishes, among
others.

The National Holidays are a very important date in the Peruvian
calendar, because the day of Independence in 1821 is remembered
by the hand of José de San Martín.
July 28 and 29 are declared holidays and the population takes the
opportunity to do family activities, taste typical dishes or make
trips.
In addition, it is a date where everyone demonstrates their great
patriotism by decorating their homes and streets.

It should be borne in mind that on July 28 of each year Peru
celebrates one more anniversary of the Independence that occurred
in 1821.
After this historical fact the country became a Republic that is
currently part of South America.

TIMELINE OF INDEPENDENCE
On July 28, 1821, the Independence of Peru was proclaimed
by José de San Martín. However, for this to occur, some
preliminary steps had to be taken. These are:
• July 6 - Viceroy José de la Serna leaves Lima with 6,000
men.
• July 8 - The emissaries of San Martín enter Lima.
• July 9 - At night, a division of the patriot cavalry enters
Lima.
• July 10 - San Martín arrives in Lima and stays at the house
of the Marquis of Monte Mira.
• July 12, San Martín recommended to General Arenales not
to commit his division in combat until he had the complete
certainty of winning.
• July 14 - San Martín sends an official letter to the Cabildo of
Lima highlighting the convenience of convening a general
meeting.
• July 16 - La Gaceta de Lima publishes a tribute to San
Martín.
"From this moment Peru is free and independent by the general
will of the peoples and by the justice of their cause that God
defends. Long live the Fatherland!, Long live freedom!, Long live
independence!", were the words of General José de San Martín on
July 28 in the Plaza Mayor of Lima.

In 1821 General Don José de San Martín proclaimed in Lima the independence of Peru.
TRADITIONAL ACTIVITIES OF JULY 28
July 28, the main day of the National Holidays, is
characterized because citizens can see a series of public activities
that have been carried out over the years. Among these we have:
• Mass and Te Drum are performed.
• Congressmen, ministers of state and the head of state
attend the traditional mass.
• The Congress receives the President of the Republic.
• The President of the Republic gives his message to the
Nation in Congress.

In Peru, not only July 28 is a day of celebration and celebration,
because the same thing happens on July 29 every year.
July 29 is an important date because it honors the Armed Forces
and National Police of Peru.
