INTRODUCTION
"Annabel Lee”
tells the story of a young love cut
short by tragedy. As the speaker (often
assumed to be based on Poe himself,
whose young wife died shortly before
he wrote this poem)
discusses his relationship with the now-
deceased Annabel Lee, he presents the
love between them as pure, eternal, and
all-conquering.

MOTIVATIONAL GAME / ACTIVITY
5
It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

ANNABEL LEE BY EDGAR ALLAN POE
And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsmen came And bore her away
from me,
To shut her up in a sepulcher
In this kingdom by the sea.
I WAS A CHILD AND SHE WAS A CHILD, IN THIS BUT OUR LOVE IT WAS STRONGER BY FAR THAN THE LOVE OF
KINGDOM BY THE SEA, BUT WE LOVED WITH A LOVE THOSE WHO WERE OLDER THAN WE- OF MANY FAR WISER
THAT WAS MORE THAN LOVE- I AND MY ANNABEL THAN WE- AND NEITHER THE ANGELS IN HEAVEN ABOVE NOR
LEE- WITH A LOVE THAT THE WINGED SERAPHS OF THE DEMONS DOWN UNDER THE SEA CAN EVER DISSEVER MY
HEAVEN COVETED HER AND ME. SOUL FROM THE SOUL OF THE BEAUTIFUL ANNABEL LEE,
AND THIS WAS THE REASON THAT, LONG AGO, FOR THE MOON NEVER BEAMS, WITHOUT BRINGING ME
IN THIS KINGDOM BY THE SEA, DREAMS OF THE BEAUTIFUL ANNABEL LEE; AND THE STARS
A WIND BLEW OUT OF A CLOUD, CHILLING NEVER RISE, BUT I FEEL THE BRIGHT EYES OF THE BEAUTIFUL
MY BEAUTIFUL ANNABEL LEE; S ANNABEL LEE; AND SO, ALL THE NIGHT-TIDE, I LIE DOWN BY
O THAT HER HIGHBORN KINSMEN CAME AND BORE THE SIDE OF MY DARLING MY DARLING-MY LIFE AND MY
HER AWAY FROM ME, BRIDE; IN HER SEPULCHER THERE BY THE SEA- IN HER TOMB
TO SHUT HER UP IN A SEPULCHER BY THE SOUNDING SEA.
IN THIS KINGDOM BY THE SEA.
