Lab #5

Title: Rates of Reaction

Aim: To investigate how concentration affects the rate of reaction between sulphuric
acid (H2SO4) and sodium thiosulphate (Na2S2O3).

Apparatus/Materials:

 Sheet of blank paper

 Black marker
 250ml beaker x2
 100ml beaker
 Stopwatch
 2 M H2SO4 solution
 16 gdm-3 Na2S2O3 solution
 50 ml measuring cylinder x2

Diagram:

Make sure to change the acid to sulphuric acid

Method:

1. A marker was used to draw a cross in the middle of the blank paper.
2. 30ml of the sodium thiosulfate solution was poured into a beaker and placed
directly above the cross drawn.
3. 30 ml of sulphuric acid was added to the beaker and a stop clock was started
at the same time.
4. The beaker was swirled and placed back on the paper marked with a cross.
5. The time taken for the cross to disappear was recorded.
6. The experiment was repeated using 25,20,15,10 and 5 ml of sodium
thiosulfate solution respectively. In each case, water was added to make the
volume up to 30 ml and mixed before adding H2SO4.
7. Results were recorded on a suitable table.
