Task 6: Make suggestions for improvements in workplace report.

The consultant has advised that when a chemical spill happens, there are generally 7 steps identified
that will ensure an effective response:

1) Assess the risk

- identify how much has been spilled and the primary dangers posed to the spill responders
and the environment.
2) Select personal protective equipment
- If the danger is uncertain and the material is unknown, the worst should be assumed, and the
highest level of protection used.
3) Confine the spill
- The flow of the liquid should also be stopped before it has a chance to contaminate a water
source – minimising the spill area and protecting drains are the priorities.
4) Stop the source
- This could simply involve turning a container upright or plugging a leak from a damaged drum
or container.
5) Evaluate the incident and implement clean-up
- Once the spill is confined and the leak has been stopped, it is time to reassess the incident
and develop a plan of action for implementing the spill clean-up.
6) Decontaminate the site
- The site, personnel, and equipment should be decontaminated by removing or neutralising
the hazardous materials that have accumulated during the spill
7) Complete required reports
- Typical reports include medical reports, local council or district reports, Environment
Protection Agency (EPA) reports and company safety reports.

Question 6.1: What improvements could be made to the Company Emergency Procedure for a minor
(does not affect stormwater) spill or release provided in APPENDIX D.

(Select the 2 correct answers)

a) The first step should be to stop the source. ☐

b) “Select PPE” should be added to the procedure. ☐
c) “Decontaminate the site” should be added to the procedure. ☐
d) The first step should be to complete required reports. ☐
