NURSING RESEARCH

Cebu Doctors’ University

College of Nursing.

This course introduces the learners to the research process as

it applies in conducting nursing-related studies. The learners
will develop and propose a research study as they participate
in different research activities along the phases of nursing
research.

After 6 hours of varied teaching-learning strategies, the learners will be able to:
1. Explain the following:
1.1. Consumer-producer Continuum in Research
1.2. Evidence Hierarchy of Designs for Cause-probing Questions
2. Enumerate mediums of communication of research findings:
2.1. Theses and dissertations
2.2. Journal articles

LEARNING OUTCOMES
After 6 hours of varied teaching-learning strategies, the learners will be able to…
3. Distinguish the “6 P’s” of research utilization:
4.3.1. Publication
4.3.2. Patent
4.3.3. Product
4.3.4. People Services
4.3.5. Places and Partnerships
4.3.6. Policies
4. Appreciate CDUCN engagements in research.

DISSEMINATION PHASE

“No study is complete until the findings have been

shared…”

Research Dissemination is:

- the process of sharing information and knowledge
- an active approach of spreading evidence-based
interventions to the target audience via determined
channels and planned strategies

Obj. 1
DISSEMINATION PHASE

Goal:
1. to ensure physical availability of research materials to
as large a proportion of the target audience as possible

2. to make research findings comprehensible to those

who receive them

DISSEMINATION PHASE

Importance:
1. it prevents information knowledge to stay where it is
generated
2. it adds value to research projects; impact of research
can be potentially wider than the original focus
3. it promotes the profile of the organization and
strengthens its research capacity

Dissemination

DISSEMINATION PHASE

Developing a dissemination plan:

1. Select a communication outlet (journal article or
conference presentation)
2. Identify the audience
3. Decide on the content that can be effectively
communicated in a single outlet

CONSUMER-PRODUCER CONTINUUM IN RESEARCH

“ every nurse has a responsibility to engage in one or more roles

along a continuum of research participation…”

Consumers of Nursing Research

- read research reports for relevant findings that might affect
their practice; EBP depends on well-informed consumers

Producers of Nursing Research

- actively participate in generating evidence by doing research

Dissemination

Obj. 1.1
CONSUMER-PRODUCER CONTINUUM IN RESEARCH

Research activities which nurses may engage:

1. Participating in a journal club which involves meetings among
nurses to discuss and critique research articles
2. Solving clinical problems and making clinical decisions based
on rigorous research
3. Collaborating in the development of an idea for a clinical study
4. Reviewing a proposed research plan in terms of feasibility
5. Recruiting potential study participants

CONSUMER-PRODUCER CONTINUUM IN RESEARCH

Research activities which nurses may engage…

6. Collecting research information (e.g., distributing questionnaires
to patients)
7. Giving clients advice about participation in studies
8. Discussing the implications and relevance of research findings
with clients

EVIDENCE HIERARCHY OF DESIGNS

Obj. 1.2
EVIDENCE HIERARCHY OF DESIGNS

- Ranks the types of evidence sources according to the strength of

the evidence they provide in EBP
-The strongest possible evidence according to this hierarchy
comes from systematic reviews that integrate findings from
multiple Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) or Experimental
Designs which use rigorous methodical procedures; second in
hierarcy is individual RCT studies and so on…

“ in nursing, best evidence refers to findings from

research that is methodologically appropriate,
rigorous, and clinically relevant for pressing
clinical questions…”

COMMUNICATING RESEARCH FINDINGS

1. Theses and dissertations

2. Journal articles
a.) via traditional and social media
3. Online publications
a.) use of internet sites
4. Presentation at professional meetings
a.) oral presentations in the clinical setting
b.) events sponsored by an organization
c.) poster or podium sessions at conferences

THESES AND DISSERTATIONS
- An empirical study conducted for completion of a doctoral or master’s
degree
Conventional parts:
1. Front Matter: Title Page, Abstract, Copyright Page, Approval Page,
Acknowledgment Page, Table of Contents, List of Tables, List of
Figures, List of Appendices
2. Main Body: Chapter I (Introduction), Chapter II (Review of
Literature), Chapter III (Methods), Chapter IV (Results), Chapter V
(Discussion and Summary)
3. Supplementary Pages: Bibliography, Appendices, Curriculum Vitae

Journal Articles
 in traditional professional journals

 ejournals on a variety of outlets at the internet

Advantage:
- ease of access worldwide
- once peer-reviewed, electronic publications
build strong evidence base for
nursing practice
Quantitative reports (and many qualitative reports) typically
follow the IMRAD format:

(Abstract)
I – introduction (Why was the study done?)
M – method (How was the study done?)
R – results (What was learned?)
and
D – discussion (What does it mean?)
(Acknowledgement and References)

CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS

Nursing studies may be presented orally (podium presentation) or

through visual display (poster presentation, infographic).

Advantages:
1. Allows presentation to clinical audiences
2. Allows meeting and talking with other conference attendees
working on the same field
3. Simpler submission mechanics than journals

CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS

Oral Presentation Guidelines

1. Usually follow the IMRaD format
2. Time allotted for presentation is 10 to 15 minutes, with 5
minutes for questions
Time estimation: 1 double-spaced page = 2.5 to 3 minutes
3. Present important aspects of the study
4. Deliver conversationally, rather than reading verbatim
5. Rehearse the scripts

CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS

Poster Presentation Guidelines

1. Summarize study highlights in visual displays
2. Poster sessions are usually 1 to 2 hours: researchers display
simultaneously while judges and attendees circulate the exhibit
area
3. Stand beside poster to ensure effective communication
4. Use bullet points, graphs, and photos, bold fonts
5. Construct posters sturdily and follow prescribed dimensions
