Generally,in rhetorical questionsthe speakerdoesnot expectan
answer from the hearer, since the answer is given by the speaker
. In certain caseseven,the hearer is preventedfrom answeringi
himself
hcause of socialor institutional conventions.For example:
Here,
the speakerknows the answer but he is not sure if the hearer
knowsit or not. So,the questioner is testing the knowledgeof the
respondent.Thereare two kinds of exarninationquestions.First, they
areusedfor didacticpurposesby teachersor teaching-inclinedparents
andsuperiors.For example:

sincehe doesn't deserve any sanctions for his answer, but on the
contraryhe is induced by the questioner to make a decision.
Therefore, what the speaker intends to do when an especially
politeform is chosen for the request to agree is to deem a specific
answer.His purpose is not to have his knowledgeconfirmed but to get
thehearer'sexplicit agreementto the assumption expressed.Onecould
arguethat acts of this type of questioning express the questioner's
dependence on the answerer. The speaker behavesas if he is inferior
tothehearer,since he expresseshis doubt as to the feasibility of his
assumption;the hearer is apparently granted an option becausehe is
inducedto make a decision.
I assumethat the speech situations in which the above four
modes of questioning, according to speakers' intentions, are uttered,
aresufficiently specified. However,other speechsituations are equally
possible.Notice that I by no means want to suggest that the list is
exhaustive. Nor do i want to claim that thecateSoriesare distinctive;
