DEVELOPMENT OF MALAYSIAN STANDARDS

The Department of Standards Malaysia (STANDARDS MALAYSIA) is the national

standardisation and accreditation body.

The main function of the Department is to foster and promote standards,

standardisation and accreditation as a means of advancing the national economy,
promoting industrial efficiency and development, benefiting the health and safety of
the public, protecting the consumers, facilitating domestic and international trade and
furthering international cooperation in relation to standards and standardisation.

ly
Malaysian Standards are developed through consensus by committees which

On
comprise of balanced representation of producers, users, consumers and others with
relevant interests, as may be appropriate to the subject in hand. To the greatest
extent possible, Malaysian Standards are aligned to or are adoption of international
se
standards. Approval of a standard as a Malaysian Standard is governed by the
Standards of Malaysia Act 1996 (Act 549). Malaysian Standards are reviewed
po

periodically. The use of Malaysian Standards is voluntary except in so far as they are
made mandatory by regulatory authorities by means of regulations, local by-laws or
ur

any other similar ways.

gP

The Department of Standards appoints SIRIM Berhad as the agent to develop

Malaysian Standards. The Department also appoints SIRIM Berhad as the agent for
distribution and sale of Malaysian Standards.

FOREWORD

This Malaysian Standard was developed by the Technical Committee on Cables and Cable
Accessories under the authority of the Electrotechnical Industry Standards Committee (ISC E-
1). Development of this standard was carried out by the Malaysian Cable Manufacturers
Association which is the Standards-Writing Organisation appointed by SIRIM Berhad to
develop standards for cables and cable accessories.

In the preparation of this standard, consideration was given to IEC 60502-1:2004 Second
edition, Power cables with extruded insulation and their accessories for rated voltage from 1
kV (Um = 1.2 kV) up to 30 kV (Um = 36 kV) – Part 1: Cables for rated voltage of 1 kV (Um = 1.2
kV) and 3 kV (Um = 3.6 kV), published by the International Electrotechnical Commission.

ly
The Technical Committee has determined that minor differences in construction and test
requirement to the IEC 60502-1 are necessary and this has been incorporated to comply with

On
the prevailing practices of cable manufacturers and users in Malaysia. These are as follows:

a) spark testing of insulation has been included;

b) requirement for oversheath markings has been included;

se
c) standard requirements for drumming and packaging of completed cables have been
included; and
po

d) tests at low temperature for insulation and oversheath which are not suited to
conditions in Malaysia have been excluded.

Compliance with a Malaysian Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal
ur

obligations.

ELECTRIC CABLE AND WIRE: 600/1 000 (Um = 1 200) V SINGLE CORE
PVC INSULATED CABLE – NON-ARMOURED

1. Scope
This Malaysian Standard specifies construction, dimension and test requirements of PVC
insulated, PVC sheathed single core cables, non-armoured for operation at rated voltage
600/1000 (Um = 1200) V.

The cables as prescribe are generally use for low voltage, fixed installation system for
distribution network. It is not intended for use in prolonged water logged conditions and for
specialised applications (e.g. welding, crane lifting, mines, aerial), which are covered by other

ly
Malaysian Standards, where applicable.

2. Normative references
On
The following normative references are indispensable for the application of this standard. For
dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of
se
the normative references (including any amendments) applies.

3. Definitions
For the purposes of this standard, the definitions given in IEC 60502-1 apply.

4. Construction
4.1 Conductors

4.1.1 The conductor shall be Class 1 or Class 2 plain aluminium or annealed copper
complying with the requirements of MS IEC 60228.

4.1.2 The nominal area of the conductors shall be as specified in Table 1.

ly
4.2 Insulation

4.2.1

4.2.2 On
The insulation shall be PVC/A in accordance with IEC 60502-1.

The nominal and minimum thickness of insulation shall be as specified in Table 1.

For each piece of core, the smallest value measured shall not fall below 90 % of the nominal
value by more than 0.1 mm.
se
4.2.3 Unless otherwise specified, the colour of the insulation shall be black throughout the
length of the cable.
po

4.3 Oversheath

The oversheath shall be an extruded layer of PVC ST1 in accordance with IEC 60502-1.
Unless otherwise specified, the colour of the oversheath shall be black.
ur

The nominal and minimum thickness of the oversheath shall be as specified in Table 1. The
average of the measured value rounded to 0.1 mm, shall not be less than the nominal

thickness.

4.4 Oversheath marking

The oversheath shall be marked with a complete set of elements in the order specified below.
tin

The distance between the end and start of each element shall not exceed 50 mm while the
distance between the end and start of each complete set of element shall not exceed 250
mm. The markings shall consist of upright block characters of approximately the same height
of between 1.5 mm to 10 mm.
