INTRODUCTION TO BIOMEDICAL
ENGINEERING

Time : 2½ Hours] [Maximum Marks : 75

Before answering the question-paper candidates


should ensure that they have been supplied to correct
and complete question-paper. No complaint, in this
regard, will be entertained after the examination.

Note : Attempt Four questions in all. All questions


carry equal marks.

1. (a) What are the various components of
general biomedical equipment ? Correlate
the ECG machine with the general
biomedical equipment.
(b) Draw a wheat-stone bridge and derive its
transfer function. Suggest one application
of wheat stone bridge for biomedical
instrumentation.

2. (a) Name different static characteristics of a


general transducer and briefly describe
them.
(b) In a tabular form compare the
characteristics of thermistor, RTDs and
thermocouple. Suggest one application of
thermistor for biomedical instrumentation.

3. What are bio-potential electrodes ? Draw and


explain the equivalent circuit diagram of
surface electrode placed over the skin. Design
a suitable electrode to pick up the muscle
potential of calf muscle.

4. Using graph explain Lung volumes and Lung
capacities. Design a transducer to measure the
respiratory volumes.

5. (a) Discuss the direct and indirect methods


of measuring blood pressure. Suggest any
improvement over existing devices.
(b) What are Catheters ? Describe cardiac
catheters.

6. (a) Explain the dilution method for measuring


blood flow.
(b) Briefly explain the principle of blood
flow measurement using Ultrasonic blood
flow meter. Suggest any improvement
over existing methods of blood flow
measurement.

7. Discuss the principle of MRI. Explain the basic


components of MRI system with the help of
suitable diagram.
