LEARNING
There are many ways to compare fractions. One way is illustrating
the fractions before comparing. Consider the problem below:
Andy has ½ pizza while Rene has 3/5 pizza. Who has the bigger size of pizza?
3 3
7 4

We can also compare fractions by changing the dissimilar fractions to similar before
comparing the fractions.
Answer this problem: Mang Canor has ½ hectare of rice filed while Mang Isko has 2/3 hectare.
Who has the biggest size of rice field?
½ and 2/3 are dissimilar fractions. We can change them to similar using 6 as their LCD.
1 3
2
= 6
2
3
= 4

1 2
Therefore, 2 is lesser than 3 . Or

3 .
Mang Isko then has bigger size of rice field than Mang Canor.
Try These: Compare the fractions in the window pane. Write the dissimilar fractions to
similar fractions before comparing. Use the LCD on the wheel.

We can also compare fractions by their resulting cross product.

Estimating the fraction may help you compare the two
fractions. Fraction is either close to zero (0), close to one half
(½) or close to one (1).

We can also change the fraction to decimal before comparing
the fractions.
