English 10-1 Course Outline

Course Description:
This course is designed to challenge you to closely read texts and to prepare you
for a path that leads to university. We read stories to build empathy for others and
to experience perspectives we may never otherwise experience.

Course Assessment:
10% - research and representation
20% - personal and creative writing
25% - critical analysis
25% - critical reading and reading comprehension
20% - final exam

Primary Text and Film List:

Animal Farm by George Orwell

➢ Animal Farm is Orwell's classic satire of the Russian Revolution - an


account of the bold struggle, initiated by the animals, that
transforms Mr. Jones's Manor Farm into Animal Farm - a wholly
democratic society built on the credo that All Animals Are Created
Equal. But are they?

Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare

➢ Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy, written by William Shakespeare early


in his career, about two young star-crossed lovers, whose deaths
ultimately reconcile their feuding families. Romeo and Juliet belongs
to a tradition of tragic romances stretching back to antiquity.

Film: Black Panther 2018

➢ T'Challa, heir to the hidden but advanced kingdom of Wakanda,


must step forward to lead his people into a new future and must
confront a challenger from his country's past.

Film: Romeo and Juliet 1996

➢ Shakespeare's famous play is updated to the hip modern suburb of


Verona still retaining its original dialogue.

Classroom Procedures

When Class Starts:


➢ We start each day with silent reading for 10 minutes. You may bring a book from home,
borrow one from the classroom library, or borrow one from the school library.

Seating:
➢ Seating plan is created to build community, encourage working with a variety of
classmates, and experiencing a diversity of opinions and perspectives.
➢ Will change regularly and as needed.

Food In Class:
➢ Snacking is welcome, but be mindful and respectful.

Homework Procedures:
➢ Due dates and reminders are on the side board, I will also provide in class reminders
and keep teams updated.
➢ Zeros will be entered temporarily for late assignments. Once it is handed in the zero is
replaced with the mark you earned.
➢ Before the midterm report card and the final report card there will be a cut-off date
whereafter the zero will be permanent.
➢ Submit all digital assignments to teams

Lates & Attendance:


➢ Be on time – it is rude to be consistently late – if late, knock and wait for me to let you
in and come in with as little disruption as possible.
➢ Communicate about known absences ahead of time

Cell Phones:
➢ Due to the collaborative and discussion-based nature of English, cell phone use will be
restricted. Cell phones should be away and silent throughout class to promote focus on
class activities.
➢ Videotaping, recording, or taking pictures in class without direct written and verbal
permission from the teacher, and other students is strictly prohibited, and will be dealt
with accordingly/ legally.
Acknowledgement Form and Agreement:
I hereby acknowledge that I have read and understand the “English 10-1 Course
Outline.” I recognize the context and content of the novels, plays, and films being
covered in class, and therefore give my child permission to participate in and
read/watch the aforementioned texts in the outline. I understand the responsibilities of
my child in the classroom, as well as the assignments they will need to complete in
order to demonstrate their understanding of these texts. If I have any questions, or
concerns about the course, or the material being taught, I will reach out to the course
teacher to address them.
