1. Scope
1.1 This standard defines the minimum mandatory requirements governing design and
supply for induction and synchronous motors and generators, fixed installations.
1.2 This standard sets the rules and basis for selecting the applicable SATORP
Engineering Standards and/or Material Specifications that supplement the
applicable Codes.
2. Conflicts and Deviations
2.1 Any conflicts between this standard and other applicable Company Engineering
Standards (JERES), Material Specifications (JERMS), Standard Drawings
(JERSD), Engineering Procedures (JEREP), Company Forms or Industry
standards, specifications, Codes and forms shall be brought to the attention of
Company Representative by the Contractor for resolution.
Until the resolution is officially made by the Company Representative, the most
stringent requirement shall govern.
2.2 Where a licensor specification is more stringent than those of this standard, the
Licensor’s specific requirement shall apply.
2.3 Where applicable Codes or Standards are not called by this standard or its
requirements are not clear, it shall be brought to attention of Company
Representative by Contractor for resolution.
2.4 Direct all requests for deviations or clarifications in writing to the Company or its
Representative who shall follow internal Company procedure and provide final
resolution.
3. References
The selection of material and equipment, and the design, construction,
maintenance, and repair of equipment and facilities covered by this standard shall
comply with the latest edition of the references listed below as of the CUT-OFF
DATE as specified in the Contract unless otherwise noted.

4. Definitions
4.1 Definitions presented in this Standard and other SATORP documents have
precedence over other definitions. Conflicts between various definitions shall be
brought to the attention of Company Representative by the Contractor for
resolution.
Company: SATORP (formerly Jubail Export Refinery - JER)
Company Representative: A designated person from the Company or an
assigned third party representative.
Company Inspector: A designated person or an agency responsible for
conducting inspection activities on behalf of the Company.
4.2 List of Definitions

Industrial Facilities: Includes the following:
- Facilities directly associated with production, processing, or bulk distribution
of hydrocarbons. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Process units
- Bulk distribution
- Pumping stations
- Utilities such as steam producing, instrument air, cooling water
- Office buildings exceeding three occupied floors
- Control buildings, technical buildings and electrical substations
- Fire water facilities
- Non-Industrial Facilities: This includes, but is not limited to, the following;
- Shops
- Small office buildings
- Community buildings
- Warehouses
5. General Design Requirements
5.1 Motors and generators shall be installed in accordance with IEC standards.
5.2 Motors and generators used in hazardous locations, as defined in JERES-B-068,
shall be totally enclosed.
5.3 Motors for use in hazardous (classified) locations shall be labeled or listed or
certified by one of the third party agencies listed in table below:

NOTE: For Third Party not listed, Contractor shall confirm to Company that Third party is part of the International
Standard Certified equipment program list.

5.4 Motors used in hazardous locations shall be repaired by a repair agency approved
to recertify the motors for use in hazardous locations. After repair, the motor shall
be recertified.
5.5 Where electrical equipment has to be installed in hazardous area, equipment with a
type of protection suitable for the relevant zone shall be selected and specified in
accordance with requirement of paragraph 8.6 of JERES-P-100.
5.6 Motors and generators exposed to ambient temperatures shall be rated in
accordance with JERMS-P-7502 for ambient temperature as specified inside
JERES-C-101. Motors shall be applied and sized based on their 1.0 service factor
rating.
5.7 Diesel-engine driven generator sets shall comply with JERMS-P-7518.
5.9 Specialty (definite-purpose) motors shall meet the requirements of IEC 60034.
5.10 Protective instruments (Temperature, vibration, speed, etc.) for motors shall
comply with JERES-J-604.
5.11 Motor and generator packages shall meet the noise requirements of JERES-A-105.
6. Motors for Industrial Facilities
6.1 Motors shall comply with JERMS-P-7502.
6.2 Motors shall be selected in accordance with Appendix A.
6.3 Fractional Kilowatt (Horsepower) Motors
6.3.1 The requirements of this section do not apply to fractional horsepower motors
which are an integral part of packaged parent equipment such as air conditioning
units.
6.3.2 Motors rated less than 0.746 kW (1 HP) shall comply with IEC 60034, and the
following additional requirements:

- Motors for exposed outdoor installation shall be of the totally enclosed


type and rated in accordance with IEC 60034-1 for ambient temperature
as specified in JERES-A-112 and a Class B winding temperature rise.
- Motors for indoor installation shall be totally enclosed or of the drip
proof guarded type.
- The insulation system shall be Class F minimum.
- Enclosures and terminal housings shall be metallic.
- Single Phase Motors shall be provided with a built-in thermal protective
device.
- Fans shall be metallic or reinforced fiberglass, and shall be designed for
dual rotation.
7. Motors for Non-Industrial Facilities
Motors shall comply with IEC 60034 and the following additional requirements:
7.1 Motor ratings shall be selected from Appendix A Table 1, except that where
required, when the designated power supply is not available, larger single phase
115 V, 200 V, and 230 V rated motors may be used as long as the full load current
does not exceed 50 A and larger three phase 200 V and 230 V rated motors may be
used as long as the full load current does not exceed 100 A.
7.2 Motors for outdoor installation shall be a totally enclosed type.
7.3 Motors for indoor application shall be totally enclosed or of the drip proof guarded
type.
7.4 The insulation system shall be Class F minimum.
8. Protection
8.1 General
8.1.1 Motor protection requirements are covered within the applicable SATORP
Materials Specifications (JERMS) to which the equipment is connected.
Specifically:
- Low Voltage Switchgear – JERMS-P-6502
- Low Voltage Controlgear – JERMS-P-6503
- High Voltage Switchgear – JERMS-P-6504
- High Voltage Controlgear, Indoor – JERMS-P-6506
- Adjustable Frequency Drive System: Low voltage – JERMS-P-6516
8.1.2 Within Non-Industrial Facilities: protection requirements shall be as per IEC.

8.2 Stator Temperature Monitoring.


8.3 Motors rated above 75 kW and generators rated above 250 kVA shall be supplied
with stator winding temperature detectors (RTDs)
8.3.1 Resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) provided for monitoring stator
temperature shall be 100-ohm, platinum, three lead type with a temperature
coefficient of resistance equal to 0.00385 ohm/ohm/°C.
8.3.2 RTDs shall be monitored by the multipurpose motor protection package which
shall be set to alarm on high temperature. Where more than one RTD per phase is
installed, the reading and recorded value used for initiating the alarm shall shows
the highest of the RTDs value during normal operating conditions. Stator
temperature sensor shall be connected for all HV motors in accordance with
JERSD-P serie.
8.3.3 RTDs shall be installed in accordance with Appendix B.
8.4 Bearing Temperature Monitoring.
8.4.1 Motors rated above 370 kW (500 HP) and generators rated above 500 kVA shall
have bearing temperature monitoring.
8.4.2 Resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) provided for monitoring bearings
temperatures shall be 100-ohm, platinum, three lead type with a temperature
coefficient of resistance equal to 0.00385 ohm/ohm/°C.
8.4.3 Bearing temperature sensor installations shall meet the requirements of
specification JERMS-J-4625. Bearing temperature sensors may be offset from the
bearing centerline where required.
8.4.4 Bearing temperature sensors shall be monitored either by the multifunction motor
protection package or by a separate integrated system protecting the motor and the
driven equipment which shall be set to alarm on high temperature.
8.5 Generator Protection
8.5.1 For other than Standby/Emergency generators, where protection functions are
provided by an integrated package, some redundancy must be provided. As a
minimum, phase and ground over current shall be provided by other relays or other
packages.
8.5.2 The protection for generators above 250 kW shall be subject to review by
SATORP Electrical Company Representative
8.5.3 Small Standby / Emergency Generators

This section provides general protection requirements for small low voltage
standby/emergency, diesel-engine driven generators.
8.5.3.1 Where built-in protection is provided by the generator manufacturer, the protection
for generators above 250 kW shall be subject to review by Company
Representative.
8.5.3.2 The minimum protection shall consist of phase overcurrent and ground
overcurrent, protection devices.
8.5.3.3 The type of ground fault protection required for emergency generators shall be
subject to review by Company Representative.
8.5.3.4 The generator protection scheme shall be compatible with the following generator,
exciter, and system parameters:
- Type of Excitation System
- Magnitude and duration of generator fault currents
- Generator short-circuit withstand capability
- Coordination with downstream protective devices
8.5.3.5 Where a generator system is supplied with a molded-case main circuit breaker, the
breaker shall have a continuous current rating not exceeding 125% of the
generator's rated capacity.
8.5.3.6 Where a low-voltage main power circuit breaker is used, the breaker shall have a
continuous current rating not less than the generator maximum rating. When a
circuit breaker integral protection device is provided, it shall have long-time and
short-time phase units only. A separate ground fault relay shall alarm only.
8.5.3.7 The Vendor shall supply the following generator data for review and for use in
calculating the relay settings:
Nameplate ratings:
- Short-circuit test data showing the magnitude and duration of fault
currents for various types of faults on the generator terminals.
- Type and characteristics of excitation system.
- Short-circuit withstand capability (I²T).
- Built-in protection devices that are supplied as part of the generator
assembly.
8.5.4 Relay Selection and Functions
8.5.4.1 Relays for generator protection shall be in accordance with JERMS-P-6513.

Notes:
1) 208V rating only for operation on 208V system, and 240V only for operation on
240V system. Note 1, shall follow the guidelines for 240V and 480V rated motors
respectively.
2) Dual voltages 277/480V are only acceptable for motors up to 30 HP.
3) Above 1000kW (1340HP), the additional level of 6.6kV is permitted. The use of 6.6
kV motor plus unit transformer must be compared with a 13.8 kV motor on the basis
of cost. The documentation shall be submitted to Company approval.
4) Could be asynchronous if available.
