Using the Posters

The Key Word posters can be printed and displayed as is for student reference. Discuss
the words on the poster with the students and have them suggest word problems for
multiplication or division that use the key word.

Using the Key Word Cards

These cards can be used as a sorting activity for students. Use a white board or a chart
and divide it into 2 columns or 2 squares. Label each with, ‘Multiplication’ or ‘Division’.
These labels are provided on page 9 if you wish to use them.
As students sort the cards, have them suggest word problems that use that term. Blank
cards are also included for other key words that the students may suggest.
For some words, students may suggest that it could belong in either multiplication or
division. Have them supply a reasonable word problem to show the use of the word for
both.
This activity will provide valuable discussions which will help to consolidate the students
concepts of multiplication and division.
This will also assist them in selecting the operation that is required for word problems.

Using the Multiplication and Division Key Word Sorting Sheet

This sheet has been designed as a ‘cut and paste’ activity. Print one for each student.
Students cut out the words and then paste them into the most appropriate column. It is
also ideal as an assessment tool.

Players take turns to color a line of 3 numbers that can make a
multiplication or division equation. The line must be 3 numbers beside
each other in a row or column, e.g. A player could color 7, 3 and 21 for
7x3=21 or 21÷3=7.
The numbers can be in any order, e.g. 7, 21, 3 or 3, 7, 21.
The last player who can color a line of 3 numbers is the winner.
One line is colored to show you what to do.
