INTRODUCTION

In a world besieged by environmental challenges, innovation is the beacon illuminating the

path toward sustainability. De La Salle University - Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) stands poised at the
forefront of this transformation, ready to embark on a groundbreaking initiative set to revolutionize
recycling. This proposal aims to introduce a cutting-edge approach that not only addresses the
burgeoning issue of plastic waste but also pioneers a sustainable method for 3D printing filament
production.

The proliferation of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles in the daily basis has led to a
monumental surge in plastic waste. However, the potential inherent in these discarded bottles
remains untapped. This project seeks to harness this potential by implementing an innovative
recycling process at DLSU-D, transforming PET bottles into high-quality, eco-friendly 3D printing
filament.

The intersection of sustainability, technology, and academia forms the crux of our proposal.
By establishing a dedicated facility equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and employing
advanced recycling techniques, DLSU-D aims to create a closed-loop system. This system will not
only reduce the environmental burden posed by plastic waste but also provide a sustainable source
of raw material for the burgeoning field of 3D printing.

This embodies the university's commitment to environmental stewardship and academic

innovation. This proposal encapsulates the spirit of progress, marrying ecological consciousness
with technological advancement. It is a testament to our dedication to shaping a more sustainable
future, where waste is not a burden but an opportunity for transformation and progress.

3
PROBLEM

The continuous growth in the production and consumption of plastic products, particularly
single-use plastic bottles, has caused environmental degradation and resource depletion. The
World Bank Organization (2021) revealed that the Philippines generates an alarming 2.7 million
tons of plastic waste yearly. De La Salle University-Dasmariñas is actively engaged in making
sustainable policies within the University, conducting studies to institutionalize efforts for
environmental protection and conservation.

Recognizing the urgency of this issue, implementing a sustainable methodology is essential

to reconstitute these plastic bottles into 3D printing filament. This research is dedicated to the
collection and recycling of PET bottles, transforming them into 3D printing filament to foster
environmental awareness within the university. By adopting this sustainable approach, DLSU-D
has the potential to make a meaningful contribution to ecologically responsible 3D printing
practices.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

• To establish sustainable on-campus recycling.

• To integrate recycled filaments into 3D printing labs.

• To mitigate the environmental effects of plastic waste.

SOLUTION

In response to the escalating environmental challenges posed by the proliferation of PET

bottle waste, our project has developed a robust three-phase solution plan aimed at fostering
sustainable waste management practices. Recognizing the urgency of the issue, our initiative
begins with a meticulous Preparation and Campaign phase, involving the formation of a dedicated
project team, initiation of an impactful awareness campaign, and the strategic securing of funding

to lay the groundwork for subsequent actions. Transitioning seamlessly into the Recycling Unit
Setup and Optimization phase, we detail the procurement and installation of a cutting-edge
recycling machine, meticulous adherence to safety and environmental regulations, and an
unwavering commitment to quality through continuous improvement measures.

The culmination of our efforts unfolds in the Full-scale Production and Evaluation phase,
where the recycling unit reaches its peak operational capacity, generating 3D printing filament
from recycled PET bottles. This phase is marked by a rigorous evaluation of the project's impact
on waste reduction, environmental sustainability, and economic viability. Stakeholder feedback
becomes instrumental in refining the recycling process, while simultaneously providing a platform
for future planning and expansion. Through this comprehensive approach, our project not only
addresses the immediate need for sustainable waste management but also aspires to set a precedent
for effective recycling initiatives with the potential for broader adoption.

To further visualize our solution plan, here is an outline of the 3-Phase Solution Plan:

Phase 1: Preparation and Campaign

- Forming a project team with designated responsibilities.
- Initiate an awareness campaign to inform students and staff about the project.
- securing funding and project budget
- Preparation of the implementation for the next phase.

Phase 2: Recycling Unit Setup and Optimization

- buy and set up the recycling machine unit
- Ensure all safety and environmental regulations are met.
- Begin quality tests and identify areas for improvement.
- Optimize the processing efficiency based on the results of initial tests.

Phase 3: Full-scale Production and Evaluation

- Implement full-scale production of 3D printing filament from PET bottles.
- Evaluate the overall impact of the project on campus sustainability and waste reduction goals.
- Seek feedback and suggestions for potential improvements or future expansions

5
METHODS

Identification and Acquisition:

• Collaborate with the university's facilities management team to assess equipment needs
for on-campus PET bottle collection.
• Allocate funding for infrastructure setup within the campus.
Sourcing Strategy:
• Establish an exclusive on-campus collection system for PET bottles.
• Strategically set up recycling bins across the campus to encourage participation.

SCHEDULE

Month Proposed Plan

1-2 Planning and Preparation

-Assess campus layout and plan for recycling bin placement.
-Procure necessary equipment and install infrastructure.

3-4 System Implementation and Rollout

-Launch awareness campaigns and educate the university community about the new
collection system.
-Monitor and oversee initial operations, ensuring proper sorting and storage.

5-10 Optimization and Maintenance

-Collect and analyze data on PET bottle volumes, recycling rates, and participation
-Implement improvements based on analysis and develop a long-term sustainability

COSTING

The allocated budget of PHP 50,000 for this project is strategically divided into three distinct
categories, each serving a vital role in the successful implementation and sustainability of our
initiative.

Marketing and Promotional Material:

This portion of the budget, amounting to PHP 10,000, is dedicated to the creation and
dissemination of comprehensive marketing and promotional materials. These include the
development and production of informative posters, a detailed campaign program, and other
miscellaneous promotional expenses aimed at raising awareness among students, staff, and the
broader community. The effectiveness of the awareness campaign is pivotal in ensuring active
participation and support for the recycling initiative.

Equipment and Infrastructure:

The largest allocation, totaling PHP 25,000, is earmarked for crucial equipment and infrastructure.
This substantial portion of the budget covers the acquisition of the filament manufacturing
machine, an integral component of our recycling process. Additionally, funds are allocated for the
purchase of safety gear to ensure the well-being of our team members, recycling bins for efficient
waste collection, and testing equipment to guarantee the quality and safety of the recycled
materials. This investment in equipment and infrastructure is foundational to the seamless
operation of the recycling unit, ensuring its efficiency and adherence to safety standards.

Maintenance, Potential Expansion, and Additional Materials:

The remaining PHP 15,000 is designated for ongoing maintenance to uphold the operational
efficiency of the recycling unit. This includes regular checks, repairs, and the replenishment of
consumables as needed. Furthermore, this portion of the budget serves as a contingency for
potential expansion initiatives, allowing for scalability based on the project's success. Additionally,
these funds can be utilized to acquire any unforeseen materials or resources that may be required
as the project progresses, providing flexibility and adaptability to evolving needs.

8
By meticulously allocating our budget across these categories, we aim to maximize the impact of
our project while ensuring a sustainable and well-supported approach to PET bottle waste
management on our campus.
