Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:

Emergence of the Modern World

Objectives:

Students will be able to:

Compare and contrast the major political, social, and belief systems in the early modern
world.
Examine the causes and effects of the events surrounding the rise of Europe

State Standards:

MWH.1.CO Compare and contrast the major political, social, and belief systems and
their spatial distribution in the early modern world. This indicator was developed to encourage
inquiry into the mosaic of the modern world between 1300 and 1500 focusing on the
foundational understanding of Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Daoism, Hinduism, Islam,
and Judaism as well as highlight the development of early kingdoms, empires, and nation
states.
MWH.1.CE Examine the causes and effects of the events surrounding the Renaissance
on the rise of Europe. This indicator was developed to encourage inquiry into the causes and
effects of the Black Death, the influence of the Catholic Church, and the Renaissance during the
time period, and their implications on the development of the modern world.

Context:

The students will have some prior knowledge based on how they have been learning
about some portions of this topic throughout the year and one station is to familiarize them
with the topic of the lesson. For the future, this lesson will lead into the history of certain
regions in the world and specific things about how things operate in different regions in the
world. Before this lesson, students will be informed that there will be a station lesson within the
next couple of days and will be given some background knowledge on what it will be about.

Data:

The data that will be used to group my students is the seating chart because they are
going to have worked with them in the past and that will mean they are going to be familiar
with them because of prior exposure. During the lesson I will have the students fill out little
portions of a worksheet based on how they perform in the game and if they are attentive and
stay on topic in the other two stations.
Materials:

Things like PowerPoint and the game which will be liked below will be used. This is not a super
complicated lesson and should be easy to present and understand.

Procedures:

Introduction: 10 minutes
Students will come into class and sit down before I start explaining what is going on that
day for class, I will ask them how their day is going and if they would like to share anything to
keep them engaged and make sure they feel heard. Once the kids are ready, I will begin to
explain how the kids will get into groups and work on a project about how the emergence of the
modern world affected the world as a whole. I will show some example projects and what I am
looking for and then I will put them into groups.

Teacher Small groups: 10 minutes

In this portion of the lesson, the teacher will present a PowerPoint to the students in
small groups and then will encourage them to take notes and pay attention to the PowerPoint
for them to stay engaged. This PowerPoint will be on the Emergence of the modern world and
how that has affected the US and its day-to-day operations. After the teacher is done presenting
they will then instruct the students to switch groups and rotate to the next station.

Collaborative: 10 minutes
In this stage, the students will have a conversation about the last station that they had or
if this is their first station, they will talk about prior knowledge that they have on this topic to be
prepared for the next stations. This can be done by having a small conversation or having a
prompt lead discussion so that they stay on topic and fill out their sheet. Then when the teacher
says so they will rotate stations to the next one.

Independent Digital: 10 minutes

In this state, the students will play as much of the game link listed below as they can
before the time runs out to see the modern world US presidency and the job of how they run
the country on a day to day basis. This will help the students understand what the job of the
president is and what they do throughout there presidency.

Closure: 10 minutes
I will then tell the students to clean everything up and put everything away before
asking them if they have any questions or if they are wondering anything on the lesson that
they did today or any of the stations. This is the period where students have time to ask
questions to me or any other classmates about anything that has happened during that class
period that day and have one final check on how the lesson went and what their thoughts of it
were.

Rationale:
The game used in the lesson plan has good content quality because it shows, and it very
user-friendly how the modern-day US president does his day-to-day tasks and what it takes to
be a US President. The learning goal is to understand the US government and see what the
different parts of the government do along with the president. Feedback and adaptation are
very good because there are many different options of things you can pick to focus on as the
president and things you want to get done in your term. As for the design, it is very well
targeted at younger audiences and younger students because it is sort of cartoonish and
animated but also looks for serious people. There are many different game modes to choose
from and many different things you can do not only within the game but also within the
platform that the game is on. This is a very good website for things to come up with games or
activities for students to do in school and for the students to complete even for homework.
