NATIONAL TREASURE
Little Greene continues its collaboration with the National Trust with the
launch of National Trust Papers III, a versatile, eclectic and beautiful collection
of eight historic wallpaper designs taken from National Trust properties and
reimagined for the modern interior.
With 45 colourways and using traditional methods of printing that have
remained unchanged for over 100 years, the collection has motifs and patterns
from the natural world, including hand-painted birds, stylised florals and
scrolling trails. Each design has been created from original source material
found at three of the National Trust’s historic houses – Oxburgh Hall and
Felbrigg Hall in Norfolk, and Newark Park in Gloucestershire – with one design
that has been re-coloured and revived from the Little Greene archive. An
impactful and optimistic range, the only issue will be which one to choose.

Moody blues
This bench in my dining room has been well
used and well loved for many years, so I gave
it a refresh using Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan.
I wanted to mix my own colours and layer the
paint to give depth. For my first coat, I mixed
one-part Provence and one-part Old Ochre,
followed by a layer of Clear Wax. I then mixed
a slightly different shade – one-part Florence,
one-part Svenska Blue, one-part Old Ochre –
and used a dry bristly brush to stipple this over
the wax. I finished with more Clear Wax, then
Dark Wax, especially in the corners to create a
lovely patina.

DECO DECOR
The first thing the couple did after moving in was
to strip the heavily papered rooms. ‘There was
wallpaper on every wall and it was very floral!’
Katie recalls. ‘I love flowers but this wasn’t going
to work with the 1930s feel.’ Martin added new
panelling up the stairs and Katie used pink as her
key colour to tie all the rooms together. She chose
Valspar’s Pink Beach in the hall and bathroom
and used Pink 01 by Lick in her workroom. These
hues also coordinate beautifully with the vintage
striped wallpaper in the revamped bathroom,
which Katie sourced on eBay.
On Katie’s wishlist for her bedroom was a
French upholstered bed frame and she managed
to find hers on eBay. ‘We won it for £300 and I love
it,’ she smiles. ‘It’s green with a floral Sanderson
print; it’s not art deco but I just fell in love with it.’
When Katie was offered an art deco cabinet
(see page 72) for free while collecting a 99p
wardrobe from Facebook Marketplace, she knew
it would be ideal for her workroom. ‘I never say
no to free stuff!’ she laughs. ‘I wanted to use it to

SCALLOPS & STRIPES

When the family moved in, curtains were
left hanging in every room and Katie cleverly
repurposed them as upholstery fabrics to recover
ottomans and stools. ‘The navy velvet curtains
from the front room were such beautiful material
that I used them to have my armchair recovered,’
she reveals. It pairs beautifully with a wide-striped
fabric from IKEA for a mix-and-match look (see
page 70). ‘I have a thing for stripes!’
While Katie describes the original kitchen as
‘perfectly liveable’, the brown cupboards and
dark wallpaper were making the room feel small
and shadowy. ‘We wanted to open up the space
between the unused conservatory and the kitchen,
which meant we had to level the floors,’ she
explains. ‘We kept the carcasses and my talented
brother-in-law made new fronts.’ Katie revamped
an old sideboard with fresh green paint, Hyde Park
by Valspar, which coordinates beautifully with the
Farrow & Ball feature wallpaper in Arcade. The
refreshed kitchen is now Katie’s top spot in the
house. ‘I smile every time I walk in as it’s exactly
how I imagined it. My absolute favourite thing is
my scalloped splashback, which was cut by hand
to my pattern.’
Both dining tables are vintage and surrounded
by a mix of upcycled chairs, which Katie painted
with tester pots in pastel hues. The couple found
three retro rattan folding chairs on Facebook
Marketplace for just £5, which Katie now uses in
her workroom. ‘I try not to buy anything new as I
love the story that comes with old pieces.’

THE BIG
SLEEP
A multifunctional wellbeing space where
style and substance should be equally
balanced, a beautiful bedroom offers a
peaceful sanctuary
WO R D S LI N DS E Y H A RR A D

A
bedroom is not just a room to sleep,
but a place to relax and recharge, a
retreat from the busier rooms of the
house where you may find respite from
the demands of work and family life.
This room represents comfort and calm, and
should feel like an inviting, intimate space
as soon as you step inside. It’s a challenging
world out there, so it’s no surprise that the
sanctuary trend for bedrooms continues to
thrive, but while some may find a neutral,
minimalist scheme soothing, others might
feel more nurtured by richer shades and lavish
textures. Figure out what triggers your sense
of wellbeing and be guided by instinct when
it comes to creating your personal sanctuary.

Dopamine dressing
The power of dopamine dressing comes straight from the
catwalk – and if dressing in bright colours can make you
feel more positive, this can certainly apply to your home
too. If shades of ‘greige’ leave you feeling uninspired,
try colour drenching in the bedroom for added zing.
Remember that with the right lighting, even the brightest
palette can be toned down
for evening relaxation.
Try ice-cream shades

for a more traditional

colours including emerald,
fuchsia, sapphire, mauve and burgundy. Colours that
might look a trifle tacky alone become cool and edgy when
combined with darker, more sophisticated heritage hues
– especially in surprising pairings that shouldn’t work,
yet somehow make magic together.
To dip your toe into colour drenching, play with a mood
board of colour samples. Start with one bold piece such
as a bright bedroom chair or headboard, then add layers
of colourful bed linen, cushions and throws in different
textures, and finish with a statement print or accessory,
all of which can be more easily remixed and rematched
than bigger commitments such as paint and paper.

New romantic
The glamorous boudoir look never goes out of style, and
it’s a natural partner for the pink trend. Maxing out
on pink is a gorgeous way to create a sumptuous sleep
sanctuary, and it’s a look that works well in either a period
or contemporary home. When used carefully, pink can
work as a neutral, and pale, soft shades of pink in tactile
textiles layered on the bed will add luxurious depth to
the scheme.
Don’t be afraid to embrace the maximalist look with
a feature wallpaper in a bold floral print or toile de Jouy,
while a sparkling antique crystal chandelier and ornate
gilt-framed mirror will add a touch of movie-star dressing
room decadence.
For windows, drape in layers of romantic gauzy cotton
for soft, diffused light, or try silk for a hint of sheen. On
floors, traditional floorboards topped with deep, sink-into
rugs add that luxurious feel, or invest in an extravagantly
soft, wool carpet.
For a boudoir bedroom, the bed should be lavish. Look
for curved, carved and opulent or sumptuously padded
headboards, antique French-style or traditional cast-iron
bedsteads with decorative posts, or, if space allows, a four-
poster framed with delicate drapes.
Finish with eclectic antique finds and subtle hints of
sparkle – vintage lamps, antique prints, a velvet button-

wood side tables.
