ASDA LEARNING CENTER

PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION
MINUTES OF MEETING HELD ON SATURDAY 15TH JULY, 2023
1. ATTENDANCE: 92 members were present at the meeting.
2. OPENING: The meeting started at 3:20 pm with an opening prayer by Mr
Michael Dankwa. The meeting was chaired by Mrs Angela Dankwa, a member
of the Executive Committee who stood in for the chairperson Mr Jonathan
Antwi who had been delayed by another meeting elsewhere. He was delayed
for about 20 minutes.
Mrs Dankwa welcomed members and requested for their co-operation for the
meeting. When she asked for the list of apologies, the following names were
mentioned,
1. Ms Sandra Tetteh.
2. Mr Bright Gakpo.
3. Ms Acheampong.
3. READING AND ACCEPTANCE OF MINUTES OF MEETING HELD ON
SATURDAY NOVEMBER 19, 2022.
Since the secretary had already distributed the minutes on various platforms,
she only gave the highlights and only one correction was made.
-Page 1 Item 4:1.6 Should read ‘’review of 2023 Termly fees instead of 2022
termly fees.
In the absence of further corrections, the secretary moved that the minutes be
accepted for the day’s deliberations. She was seconded by Ms Nogbe to have
the minutes accepted for the day’s discussion.
4.0 MATTERS ARRISING
4.1 Follow up to presentation made by the Speech Therapist.
-Their observation: Some parents are not adhering to the points raised by the
Speech Therapist.
-Children should be introduced to tablets only when they are able to speak.

4.2 Issues about homework.
The Assistant Headmaster, Mr Joseph Akomaning explained that copies of
homework for each class are put on the various platforms to enable parents to
see the work given. He appealed to parents to show interest in the work the
children have to do. Parents are expected to sign once the child has finished
with the work. The school wants Parents to be aware of the assignments given.
Dr Dziwornu remarked that seeing the work done by his daughter had helped
to improve the hand writing of the child. Mrs. Daaku also added that for some
of the children’s poor handwriting is due to a rush in doing the work. Both
Parents and Teachers are to stress on the need for the children to take pains to
do the work and not to rush through. It was also agreed that children should
be made to redo the work over and over until they get it right and see
improvement in their hand writing.
4.3 Report on Christmas Gifts to Pupils and Teachers.
Mrs. Daaku gave a breakdown on costs involved in the under listed items
which were given to both pupils and teachers.
1.Installation of Swing – GH5,000.00
2. Repairs on old slide and climber – GH 1,000.00
3. Payment of GH 150.00 per teacher as Christmas gift from PTA for 40
teachers – GH 6,000.00
Items purchased by PTA Executives to enhance the work of teachers in the
school.
- A Television set – 3,200.00
- A Refrigerator – 3,900.00
TOTAL = 19,100.00
5.0 NEW BUSINESS
5.1 School Report
Mr. Benjamin Tetteh – Headmaster, gave a brief report on the school under
the following headlines.

- Registration of the school with WAEC.
- Staffing.
- Enrolment.
- Academic Work.
- Infrastructural Development.
- Punctuality.
- Way forward for the school.
- Conclusion.

6.0 MEETING WITH PRIMARY 6 PARENTS


The Assistant Headmaster informed members that a meeting would soon be
held with the basic 6 parents to discuss the way forward for the children when
they enter JHS 1. This is because management would require greater co-
operation with both parents and pupils in the area of prompt attendance to
school, payment of fees and commitment to serious academic work.
6.1 PROGRAME FOR JHS 2
Members were informed by Mr. Akomaning that based on the agreement with
parents, the children would continue to start classes at 7:00 am and attend
classes on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm. Arrangement for
transportation for the children have been agreed with parents and
management, so far so good for all arrangements put in place.
The volume of exercises given have increased, parents have been advised to
show interest in the work of the children while management has been holding
meetings with children who are facing problems.
SCHOOL ACADEMIC YEAR.
Mrs. Daaku informed members that based on directives given by the Ghana
Education Service, the 2023 academic year would end by August ending while
1st September will begin the 2023/24 Academic year which will run till 31 st
August 2024.
ASDA would reopen for the 2023/24 academic year 1st Term on Tuesday 19th
September and spend 14 weeks in school.

BOOKS AND STATIONERY FOR 2023/24 ACADEMIC YEAR
The secretary informed members that the school will continue to arrange for
the necessary Text books for the children. She assured parents that a circular
would be issued during the holidays to inform parents as soon as the books
were ready. She added however that the school would no longer supply
exercise and notebooks. However, a list would be provided to help parents
purchase them themselves.
ANY OTHER BUSINESS
1. A parent suggested that the list of books should be provided to enable them
check against the books supplied.
2. Management has decided to open the centre during the vacation. Parents
who desire to take advantage of this offer should kindly register at the office.
Parents are to take note that lunch will not be served. The fee for the period is
GH 400.00. The opening hours will be from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday to
Friday. Parents were kindly requested that payment should be made by August
10th 2023. Daily drop off would not be accepted.
3. A parent suggested that if it becomes necessary that a child is cained, it
should not be based on academic performance.
4. Mrs Adotey also encouraged teachers to try and avoid verbal abuse on their
bid to discipline the children. On this point Mr Tetteh apologized to parents on
such a behaviour.
5. Mrs. Madjitey remarked that the mentainance fees charged by the school is
used to pay for minor repairs. She added that when major items like breaking
of a wash hand basin, a classroom desk etc. parents should be made to pay for
such items.
6. Mr Charles Arthur also remarked that teachers sometimes tamper with the
food of some children and that it happened to his child. Again Mr. Tetteh
apologized to the parents and promised that it would not happen again.
7. The secretary informed parents that if any of them should receive a call that
a child is sick and had been sent to the hospital and some money is being
demanded, the school should be contacted at once and no payment should be
made.

CLOSING REMARKS.
1. Mr. Antwi, The Chairperson apologised to any parent whose child had been
abused in one way or the other. He thanked parents for their attendance to
the meeting and their useful contributions.
2. Prof. Djiwornu moved that in the absence of any further deliberations, the
meeting should be brought to a close. He was seconded by Mr. Charles Arthur.
The closing prayer was said by Mrs. Sheila Antwi. The meeting came to a close
at 5:20 pm.
