“THE FIBRWRAP® COMPANY”

Tyfo SW Fibrwrap
® ®

For Underwater Applications

USING BOTH GLASS AND CARBON FIBER REINFORCED TYFO® MATERIALS,

COMBINED WITH OUR TYFO® EPOXY MATRICES
Tyfo® SW Fibrwrap® for Underwater Applications

The Tyfo® SW Fibrwrap® System is designed to add strength and protection to existing concrete
or wood piles using high strength fiber/epoxy composites.

The System is designed for applications in and around the water line. The specially formulated
Tyfo® SW Epoxy can cure in both fresh and salt water at temperatures as cold as 44O F (6.7O C).

The Tyfo® SW System would typically be applied below, and one to two feet above the water
line. The area of pile above the splash zone may receive one of the Tyfo® Fibrwrap® Systems
designed for dry applications. (See Tyfo® Fibrwrap® System literature by Fyfe Co. LLC)

The Tyfo® SW System may only be applied by Fyfe Co. certified applicators using certified
equipment to ensure the highest quality system.

Product Features
• Can prevent the onset of corrosion when applied to new structural elements.
• Can be installed below the water line.
• Increases the vertical load capacity of piles, when applied to the full height of columns or
piles.
• Minimum stiffness increase to the pile, unless required as part of the design.
• Increases the shear strength of piles.
• Increases the ductility of piles.
• Simple lightweight equipment; fits in a pickup truck or can be transported to offshore
facilities.
• The System has excellent long-term material properties in water, soil and other aggressive
environments.
• Testing shows the ability to contain corrosion stresses and protect the strengthened
members from intrusion by chlorides and other corrosive agents.
• Excellent low and high temperature performance.
• Concrete repair system for damaged columns is available.
• Can be used on circular, square, rectangular, hexagonal, oblong, flared and other shaped
piles.
• Cost-effective.

Material Selection
The optimal composite material is selected based on the specific design goals and field
conditions of a project. Using detailed infomation of the existing structural system, analysis is
performed to determine the specific problems to be addressed. The proper Tyfo® System is
then designed to provide the desired structural performance.

Fyfe Co. can custom design advanced composites to meet site-specific project requirements.
Each new material must be individually tested to insure structural integrity and environmental
durability.
Installation

Typical installations include ocean-front properties, piers, bridges, or any location where either
fresh or salt water cannot be avoided. The general procedure is as follows —

o Waterblast surface to receive composite.

o Apply prime coat of Tyfo® SW Epoxy.

o Impregnate the fabric using Fyfe Co. saturation equipment.

o Apply Fibrwrap® per project specifications.

o Apply outer polyethylene wrap and secure.

o Apply UV protective coating above the waterline as required.

System in salt water at Port Hueneme
Piles with existing damage require a site-
specific investigation.
Most applications shall be coordinated
with the lowest possible tide (or water level,
as the case may be), and work shall be
performed from scaffolding and/or boats.
Applications in deep water require a more
regimented procedure involving at least two
Fyfe Co. certified applicators with diver’s
certification.

System Testing and Design
The Fibrwrap® Systems have been thoroughly tested at independent testing laboratories to
verify design procedures relating to:

• Shear strength
• Flexural strength
• Axial load capacity
• Displacement ductility
• Resistance to lap-splice degradation

Design of waterfront structure support piles is most often focused on increasing and maintaining
both axial load and shear capacity. However, each project must be analyzed to determine
the exact design parameters. Contact Fyfe Co. engineers for preliminary composite design and
associated cost estimates.

Test Reports, Performance Specifications, and List of Installations are available to designers upon
request.

The Tyfo® SW Epoxy had grey pigment added to improve
the aesthetics. Fyfe Co. can custom blend epoxies to
meet project and aesthetic requirements.
