Math - Linear Pair Theorem
Math - Linear Pair Theorem
If X is in the interior of ∠ABC, then the measure of ∠ABC is equal to the sum of the measures ∠ABX and
∠XBC.
If two angles form a linear pair, then they are supplementary angles.
Informal Proof:
Given that two angles, ∠ABC and ∠CBD, form a linear pair. By definition of linear pair, the
noncommon sides form opposite rays, BA and BD.
Since AD is a straight line, then ∠ABD = 180°. (Based of definition of a straight line)
Also, by the angle addition postulate, m∠ABC + m∠CBD = ∠ABD (notice that C is an interior
point of the ∠ABD which is why we used angle addition postulate)
And by substitution, m∠ABC + m∠CBD = 180° (since they are equal, we can substitute the 180°
that is equal to the m∠ABD)
Therefore, ∠ABC and ∠CBD are supplementary angles by the definition of supplementary
angles (which states that if the measure of two angles add up to be 180° then those two angles
are supplementary)
