Water pollution is caused by 80% of human activities,

according to a research by the Water Encyclopedia. The purpose of
this project’s advocate is to restore the coastline and riverside’s
V. Objectives of the Project beauty and cleanliness. This project particularly aims to:

1. Remove wastes from coastlines and riverside;

2. Post signage along the riverbanks and coastline;
3. Distribute fliers to raise awareness about the scope of the
marine wastes problem and how it affects humans and the
environment per se.

Background of the Project

Water pollution has been identified as one of the issues

threatening our water bodies, such as lakes, rivers, and oceans, in
recent years. Water pollution is defined as any contamination of
water with chemicals or other hazardous substances that are
harmful to the health of humans, animals, or plants (Balasuriya,
VI. Project Description 2018) . According to Coastalwiki, more than 80% of all marine
pollution comes from land-based sources, primarily industrial,
agricultural, and urban. Most human activities, including offshore
oil and gas production, marine oil transportation, and ultimately,
improper disposition of wastes. Contaminated water can reduce a
body of water’s ability to provide ecosystem services.
Improper Disposal of Waste refers to the irregular disposal of
waste in a community, such as pet waste, litter, scattered leaves,
and another yard waste. When these wastes were disposed
improperly, they become a significant source of pollution
(www.nj.gov.dep, n.d). According to Tumala (2017), improper
waste disposal is one the biggest issues faced in the Philippines.
This attitude towards the improper disposal of waste somehow
4

reflects the insufficient knowledge of the people on what are the

correct ways of segregating their garbage. In addition, these people
are not aware of the impacts of improper waste disposal in their
environment (www.ipl.org, n.d). If this situation becomes worse, it
will affect the whole community’s personal health, livelihood, and
ultimately the environment per se. To add, mismanagement of the
waste disposal has a serious effect on ground and surface water
contamination, flooding, air pollution, water pollution etc.
Futhermore, Kalumbi et al. [1] have highlighted the growing
threats to aquatic resources and public health from environmental
degradation caused principally by improper waste disposal
practices. Comprised of more than 7,500 islands, the livelihoods of
the Philippines’ coastal communities, and the fishing, shipping and
tourism industries are especially vulnerable to the impacts of
marine debris, wastes on rivers and coastlines
(www.worldbank.org, 2021). Moreover, according to (Faseyi,
2021) environmental pollution is a major threat to the sustainability
of people’s livelihoods. “If your environment is healthy, the means
to meet your needs would be readily available”. Any activity
distorting these services or benefits would have some impact on the
livelihood of the people. The levels of these impacts on their
livelihood are proportional to the magnitude of the pollution.
Ergo, the proponents has created a project entitled, Lihok Ka-
Igsoonan: A Riverside and Coastal Clean-up Drive which its
objective is to clean and replenish the health and beauty of the
coastlines and riverside in each of the proponents barangay.
Furthermore, the proponents also seeks to educate the locals living
near the bodies of water about proper waste management and the
negative effects of throwing wastes onto the bodies of water to
health, livelihood, and the environment through distributing fliers
and putting signboards near the coastlines and riverbanks.
5

Justification of the Project

A lot of locals in the barangays of the proponents depend on

fishing. Wastes on the abovementioned bodies of water hinder or
kills marine life. Furthermore, the chemicals from this waste can
have devastating effects not just on marine life but also on the life
of a human being. One way to remedy this problem is through
Clean-up Drives. Clean-ups should work as catalysts for long-term
shifts in attitudes and behavior, as well as the adoption of methods
that can have a significant impact on waste management in the
community. Wastes have long been a serious issue due to a lack of
compliance with RA 9003, also known as the Ecological Solid
Waste Management Act. Wastes continue to pollute water bodies,
posing a health risk to the public. When wastes are not properly
separated and disposed of, bugs of many kinds invade; chemicals
from wastes leak, which can be damaging to everyone's health.
Being responsible is not enough; people must also respect our
environment, protect it, and cooperate and volunteer in any activity
that deals with environmental issues. Listen and take action that can
help the environment, even in the simplest way.
Ergo, the proponents have created immediate and long-term
impacts on their communities by creating a project relating to clean-
ups. Lihok Ka-Igsonoonan: A Riverside and Coastal Clean up
Drive seeks to clean the bodies of water in the proponents'
respective barangays by removing garbage and debris from coastal
and riverbank areas, identifying the origins of litter, changing
polluting behaviors, and raising awareness about the size of the
marine debris problem. Furthermore, the proponents will also raise
public awareness about the link between health, environment, and
livelihood. Regular clean-ups can aid in the removal of plastic
pollution from the marine ecology, hence protecting local wildlife.
Through Lihok Ka-Igsoonan: A Riverside and Coastal Clean-
Up Drive, the marine life will hopefully revert back to its original
6

state-- fishes, corals, water plants, etc. Will thrive and live
harmoniously again providing back the livelihood of the local
fishermen, the bodies of water (river and sea) will no longer be
harmful to the health, and ultimately bring back the beauty of the
rivers and seas in the proponents barangays.

Benefits Derived from the Project

The following will benefit from Lihok Ka-Igsoonan: A Riverside

and Coastal Clean-up Drive:
 Local Fishermen - This project will clean the coastlines
full of wastes that may be harmful to the marine life. Through
cleaning thereof, the project will bring back or aid the
fishermen in catching more healthy fishes even if they are
fishing near the coastlines.
 Locals near the Riversides and Coastal Areas - The
locals living near the riversides and coastline will no longer
worry about health risks because of wastes near their
residencies. Furthermore, they will also be knowledgeable
about proper segregation and waste disposals for the
prevention of riversides and coastlines being packed with
wastes. They will also learn what health risks the wastes may
bring upon them and in the environment.
 Proponents - This project will serve as an avenue of
learning experience through helping the environment and
educating people about the risk of improper waste disposal
onto the bodies of water.

Coverage of the Project

The project will be implemented individually on the respective

barangays or location of the proponents namely, Barangay Plaridel,
Baybay City, Leyte; Barangay Villahermoso, Tudela, Camotes,
Cebu; Alcantara,Cebu; and Upper Lucemba Pardo, Cebu. Areas
covered with this project will only be the nearest riverbanks and
7

coastal areas of the proponents. Furthermore, the participants of

this project will be peers of the proponents to assist in cleaning up
the riverbanks and coastal areas of each geographical locations of
the proponents.

As pollution in water becomes a problem, this project aims to

clean and restore the coastline and riverside that have been
contaminated by trash and debris. Each member of Team Bayayong
11 will do this in their respective hometowns. This project will take
two weeks to complete. Each week, there will be two days to put it
into action. Proponents gathered three or more people on the first
day to assist with coastal and riverside cleanup. Create the fliers and
VII. Methodology signage that will be distributed to people on that day, and gather
materials for the clean-up. The cleanup will begin at 8:00 a.m. on
the second day and end at 10:00 a.m. Each person will have their
garbage bag, and they will work together to pick up and collect
trash that impedes access to clean water. The person in charge of
organizing the clean-up will devise games in which those who
collect a large amount of trash and debris will receive a surprise
gift. It will be determined by the weight of their garbage containers.
After the coastal or riverside cleanup, each person who assisted will
be given snacks. This cycle and schedule will also be done in the
second week.
