PROPULSION A ASSIGNMENT

Instruction: Attempt all the questions

1. A turbojet is flying with a velocity of 300 m/s at an altitude of 9150 m, where the
ambient conditions are 32 kPa and -320 C. The pressure ratio across the compressor is
14, and the temperature at the turbine inlet is 1400 K. Air enters the compressor at a
rate of 45 kg/s, and the jet fuel has a heating value of 42,700 kJ/kg. Assuming ideal
operation for all components and constant specific heats for air at room temperature,
determine:
a) The temperature and pressure at the turbine exit
b) The velocity of the exhaust gases
c) The propulsive power developed
d) The propulsive efficiency
e) The rate of fuel consumption
(10 Marks)
2.

(4 Marks)

3. With the aid of sketches explain the following variants of the simple gas turbine
engine cycles (6 Marks)
a) Intercooled recuperative cycle
b) Combined gas turbine cycle
c) Closed gas turbine cycle
4. Explain two methods of achieving cooling of the flame tube of a combustion
chamber. (4 Marks)

5. A two-stage centrifugal compressor has the following data:

The rotational speed is 250 rev/s, the air mass flow rate is 10 kg/s, and inlet stagnation
conditions are T01=298 K, P01 = 1.14 bar. The total pressure drop in the inverted U-shape
duct between the two stages is 5 %. The first stage is identified by states from 1 to 3, while
the second stage is identified by states from 4 to 6. (6 Marks)
(a) The overall pressure ratio of the compressor.
b) If ρ1 = 1.24 kg/m3 , Ca1 = Ca2, Ca4 = Ca5, calculate the diffuser depth for each stage.
(c) The power needed to drive the compressor.

6. An axial compressor stage has the following data:

Due to tip clearance between the rotor blades and casing, a tip leakage flow occurs as shown

The axial velocity is decreased by 3%, while the angles α1 and β2 are kept constant. (10 Marks)

a) Draw the velocity triangles in both cases.

b) Calculate the new total temperature rise of the stage.
c) If the pressure ratio of the stage is decreased by 3%, what is the new value of stage
efficiency?
d) State how the effects of tip leakage flow be minimized?
