BASIC RULES FOR REPRESENTATION

Digital Shape Model basis – DSM basis

Orientation
This issue differs from issue 5 in that the standard now endorses ISO 16792:2021 “Digital product-
definition data practices” without repeating its technical content.

1 Scope and field of application

This standard endorses ISO 16792:2021 “Digital product-definition data practices” without repeating its
technical content.
Volvo primarily endorses the method “Drawing and digital shape model (DSM) in combination”. The rules
shown in this standard are the same as in ISO 16792:2021, but the figures have been adapted to Volvo
Group practices and the text notes are Volvo Group-specific.
If the method “Model only” is used, it is important to ensure that all tools for this method are available
throughout the whole process, from design-engineering to aftermarket, before using this method. Also, the
method “Model only” shall deliver additional value compared with the method “Drawing and DSM in
combination” to justify its use.
This standard does not affect the option to define a part without referring to a DSM.

2 Drawing and digital shape model (DSM) in combination

In order to provide a complete definition of a part, a drawing and a digital shape model (DSM) are often
used in combination as primary documents. In such cases, the following fundamental requirements and
other provisions apply:
• Dimensions displayed on the drawing shall be considered resolved dimensions. These must not
conflict with dimensions obtained from the digital shape model; however, they shall be rounded to
the number of decimal places required for the design. See section 9.2.2 in ISO 16792:2021.
• Dimensions, e.g. theoretically exact dimensions, that are not displayed on the drawing shall be
obtained by querying the model.
Note: In some cases, the drawing can be replaced by a TR.

The part may be represented on a drawing using one or more orthographic or axonometric views and
sections. Figure 1 shows a digital shape model without annotation. A drawing shall be used along with it to
provide geometric and other requirements.

Figure 2 gives an example of an orthographic drawing depicting the modelled part, while figure 3 shows an
axonometric drawing stating the same requirements. Irrespective of the method used to depict the part,
orthographic or axonometric, the drawing shall contain a note stating that the DSM is the basis for
dimensions not stated on the drawing and contain a reference to STD 101-0001. See also section 3.1.
Note: Axonometric depiction requires extra attention to the legibility of dimensions and annotations.

3 Reference to this standard

3.1 Drawing and digital shape model (DSM) in combination
When a drawing is used in combination with a digital shape model (DSM) to provide a complete part
definition, the following text note shall be indicated in the text space of the drawing:

3.2 Model only

When a model, but no drawing, is used and the model is created in accordance with the rules given in ISO
16792:2021, the following note shall be specified in the model-annotation plane for general notes:
