RAINWATER HARVESTING SYSTEM

For study
RAINWATER HARVESTING Page 11 of 15

 RHW is a collection and RAINWATER HARVESTING system

storage of rain water that
run off from a surface
area for human use.

Rainwater Harvesting SYStem

 Important component
• Roof
• Conveyance
• First Flush
• Water Tank
• Water pump (depend
on the type of RWH
system)
Roof COLLECTION
 Roof act as the
surface which
catches rainwater.
 The catchment area
for the roof is show in
the diagram as Roof
Footprint.
Conveyance
 Gutters channel the rainwater Valley GUTTER
flow from roof surface and
direct rainwater to appropriate
DOWNpipe
area (e.g. channel water flow
from roof to downpipe)

Eaves GUTTER
 Type of gutter:
• Eaves Gutter
• Valley Gutter

 Downpipe direct
the rainwater
towards to the
water tank
position.

First Flush

 Function as a device that diverts rainwater which carry the

dirt from the roof (wash off) and allowing only clean water
to flow through.
 Specific wash off rainwater volume depend on roof are size.
 First flush can be integrated into rainwater downpipe,
connected to a tank.
Direct Pump Indirect pump
RAINWATER tank
 Tank which collect and
store filtered rainwater.
 Distribution of stored
rainwater for sanitary use.
 Can be install
underground or above
ground.

Water Pump RAINWATER tank RAINWATER tank

 Direct Pumped
• The rainwater in the harvest tank will be directly
pumped into toilet and washing area.
 Indirect Pumped
• The rainwater pump into a high level header tank,
then allows the water supply to flow long the gravity
into the point of water use.

Advantages of RWH system Disadvantage of RWH system
1. Easy to maintain.
1. Unpredictable Rainfall. (not consistent)
2. Independent water supply.
2. Initial High Cost.
3. Reducing water bills.
3. May seep chemical or animal droppings.
4. Reduced demand on ground water and
reservoirs.
5. Reducing flood and Soil Erosion.
