• Never disconnect the cables during the dispensing process
• Avoid fast turning on and off of the control unit
• Avoid long stand-by durations while the system is switched on
• MDS 3000 are constructed modular, but if a defect occurs the effected modules should not be
interchanged with other parts. The whole system needs to be sent back to VERMES Technik for
repair. The cables can stay with the customer but need to be checked. Informations about this
checking performance are available by VERMES Technik.
• Avoid hard placing of the valve on the working surfaces during mounting and dismounting.
• Store the valve on a save und immobile place during cleaning of the fluid contacting parts. Make
sure that the valve suffers no joltings or concussions.
• For cleaning the valve please use a damp (isopropanol) cloth and make sure that no fluid leaks into
the valve (e. g. via connectors).
• Never connect the valve to a control unit different than the MDC 3200A (connecting it to a low
viscous MDC 3090A-L will damage the valve and the control unit).
• Please check whether all fluid connections are attached and sealed.
• Please make sure that all fluid contacting parts are stable against the fluid
• Pleas make sure that all electronic connections are connected and interlocked.
• Make sure the supply pressure does not exceed the admissible range (depending on the
configuration up to 7 bar).
• Make sure the maximum possible system pressure ranges between the valve limit and the
connection supplies limit - in no case above it.
• Please check before the use of a heating device that the fluid does not tend to unwanted reactions
at elevated temperatures.
• When using a heating device make sure that the set temperature does not exceed 0.8*boiling [°C]
temperature of the fluid.

VTK-TS-MA-021 Revision 2 5
MANUAL MDS 3200A

• When using a heating device, the upper temperature limit of the fluidic feed line, which is pressure-
dependent, has to be observed.
• The heating of the MDS 3200A can not exceed 80°C. During heating, it is not possible, to apply
Delay values smaller than 7 ms (please refer for dispensing parameters to 5.4.1).
For connection of the heating please refer to Figure 13
• The MDV 3200A works after the normally-open-concept. Though without impressed voltage is the

2.2. On-site Mounting of the MDS 3200A

The MicroDispensingValve MDV 3200A should be mounted on a smooth and even space by means of
the two tap holes (M4) at the narrow side. The distance between and the position of the tap holes in
relation to the valve is shown in the drawings in chapter. The screwing depth is about 4 mm.

2x Thread M4
Thread depth 4mm
Distance to center 45mm

Figure 3: Image of the tap holes of the MDV 3200A

All parts which contact the MDV 3200A (screws, fixing plates etc.) should be made of stainless steel,
non-ferrous metals or galvanized steel. Contact with non-refined ordinary steel may cause so called
“external rust”.
The MicroDispensingControl Unit MDC 3200A is designed as an insert for a 19” plug-in module. It
may be fixed in a place, sufficiently ventilated as well as easy to reach from the rear and the front side
in a 19” rack with 4 front side screws. The connecting cables have to be thoroughly guided. All
connectors must be fixed tight. A possible interchanging of plugs and sockets is prevented by
corresponding coding.
The connection of the MDV 3200A to the MDC 3200A is done via the 4-pin plug and the 5-pin plug
on the upper bottom of the valve. The plugs are protected against mix-up by a corresponding coding.
The red dots on the socket and the plug have to point to each other when connecting. The cable
marked with a red tension relief supplies the power for the piezo stack from -30V to 120V (bipolar
operation. Via the second cable (yellow tension relief) the data of the sensor integrated in the valve is
transferred. Disconnection is done by pulling the riffled bush axially backwards (Attention: Never
disconnect the cables from the valve while the system is still dispensing, this will lead to a damage of
the valve and the control unit. If the system is not operating, you can disconnect the valve and the
control unit. When the control unit is switched on without valve, the display will show: “Valve not
present”).

2.3. Implementation and dispensing

Step 1: Before starting the MicroDispensingSystem please get yourself acquainted to the manual
and respect the warning notices.
Step 2: Mount the cartridge holder by pulling it over
the connectors and tightening the 2 screws. Mount
then the valve to an appropriate holder.

Step 3: Connect the valve to the controller. Connect

the power cord to the controller und switch it on.

The MDS 3200A does not need time to warm up the

Piezo as no more Piezo heating is used. The 10
minutes warm-up known from the MDS 3100A is
deleted and the device is ready for operation
immediately after switching power on.

Step 4: Mount the nozzle insert. For this you need to

place the nozzle insert on top of the tappet guidance
which then needs to be screwed in into the nozzle
adjustment nut.

Step 5: Screw the nozzle unit (tappet guidance with

sealing and nozzle adjustment nut) including the
nozzle insert to the fluid box (only 3-4 turns). If not
done until now, please mount now the valve to a
stable holder.

Step 6: Conduct the adjust-process. During this

process, the nozzle insert is placed on the rright
position regarding the tappet.

Adjust-process:

• Press on the MDC 3200A. The display will show “Unscrew Nozzle Press Enter”. Unscrew the

nozzle unit from the fluid box (approx. 1-2 turns) and press .
• Screw in carefully the nozzle unit until the green LED lights up. Continue screwing in the nozzle unit
until approx. 1100 (red LED will light up!). After 30 sec unscrew the nozzle unit unit no LED lights up
(now must be a stable value between 995 und 998 in the display. If this is not the case, please carry
out the adjust-process one more time or switch off the controller respectively). Then screw in the
nozzle unit again between 1015 and 1040 (green LED).

VTK-TS-MA-021 Revision 2 9
MANUAL MDS 3200A

• The adjust-process will be finished by pressing .

Please pay attention to the value on the display. If it varies strongly the quality of the dispensing results
can be affected. If this is the case, conduct the adjust-process another time. Strong variations can
have a diversity of reasons. If you cannot overcome the difficulties, please contact VERMES Technik.
Attention!!!
Never screw the nozzle unit over a value of 1250. There is danger to break the tappet!

Æ The adjust-process can be interrupted any time by pressing .

• The valve is now ready to dispense. You only have to provide the dispensing fluid (via cartridge or
reservoir) and connect the supply pressure.
• Enter the desired dispensing parameters (Rising, Open Time, Falling, Delay, Needle Lift and
Number of Pulses). Information to the values can be found in 5.4. Using serial interface please refer to
5.6.4. Please pay attention to the order TRIGGER:SET.

• Optional: For the removal of air in the system (e. g. after change of a cartridge) save your
dispensing parameter (5.4.1) and enter the following: Rising 0.5, Open Time 1.5, Falling 0.17, Delay 5-

30, Needle Lift 75 and Number of Pulses 500-2000. Dispense by pressing approx. 500-2000 jets.
Then go back to the initial parameters.

• To start the dispensing press (a burst starts according to the entered parameters) or use the
order: VALVE:OPEN.

The green LED on the display will lighten up on all correctly adjusted systems. If this is not lightened
up, please conduct the adjust-process again. If you shut down the system and alter nothing
mechanically, you don’t have to perform the adjust-process again when switching the system on. But
then the green LED will not lighten up.
The adjust-process can be performed while fluid is already in the system but special attention needs to
be paid for the leaking of the fluid. If the fluid contains particles, the adjust-process with fluid is not
possible. It has to be performed then without fluid.
In general: if the nozzle unit is screwed in too tight, the red LED will light up. It the nozzle unit is
screwed in too loose, no LED will be on. Between 1015 and 1040 is the correct position of the nozzle
unit.

Falling

time

Figure 5: Control curve

The essential parameters are:

Parameter Description
Rising This is the time interval in which the valve is opening. The time
increment is in 0.1 ms starting at 0.3 ms.
Open Time This value defines the time in which the valve is completely open.
Again the value can be varied in steps of 0.1 ms.

If the open time is set to "external", the dispensing with the following
properties is started: for Rising, Falling, Delay, needle lift and
Number of Pulses are the values used which are set. The Open
Time, however, there has a maximum of 15ms. I.e. even if the signal
is not reset at logic 0, the valve closes after a maximum of 15ms.

Falling During this time the valve is closing and compressing the media in
the nozzle compression chamber. The time increment is 0.01 ms.
Delay This is the time between two dispense pulses. It is adjustable in 0.1
ms steps.
Please note: if a heating system is connected to the MDS 3200A, a
minimum Delay of 7 ms is given. Delay settings smaller than 7 ms
are not applicable in this case. The only way to apply values under 7
ms is, to run the heating system via an additional control unit.
Needle Lift This value corresponds to the stroke of the tappet. It is entered in
percent of the maximum stroke.
Table 2: Description of the Pulse-Parameters

After entering the dispensing parameters (5.4.1), you can start your dispensing process.

The following chapter shows the setting of the heating temperature calibration.
The calibration of the theoretical temperature values is needful to compensate irregular heating
temperatures between different control units.
However the heating is calibrated from start up delivery and anew calibration should be done only by
professional users in conversation with Vermes Technik.
The values set by the calibration are flashed in the storage of the MDC and are valid until a new
setting is done.
The adjustment values can be set in the submenu item “Calibration”.
To get access to the menu “Calibration” you need a pin code witch you can get from Vermes Technik.
The Menu “calibration” has three submenus:
“Direct Value Input” where you can set the values for “boiling point” and “ice point” directly.
“Value Measurement where you can collect the values with using a thermocouple.
“Value Verification” where you can control the settings by showing you the actual temperature.

Please note that before you do the calibration that the control unit has to be in a thermal steady state
condition. Therefore it is recommended that you run the MDC with connected heating system for 30
minutes before calibrate.

2.6. Shuting down the MicroDispensingSystem and exchange of

single components
Finish all dispensing processes so the valve is non-operative. Take care that no dispense fluid may
leak. Therefore you have to lower the supply pressure to ambient pressure. It might be necessary to
disconnect or empty the cartridge respectively the supply container. Switch-off the control unit.
Disconnect all cables. Loosen the screws with which the valve is connected to a (optional) holder.
Please make sure, that none of the components gets loose and fears to fall down. The modules can
be now taken apart and cleaned (reversed order to 2.2and 2.3. For cleaning please refer to chapter 3).
For the mounting of a new valve or control unit please lower the supply pressure of the system.
Then switch the system of, disconnect the actuator (red) and sensor (yellow) cable and exchange the
desired components. Afterwards follow the steps as described in 2.3.
For the mounting of a new nozzle insert it is necessary to reduce the supply pressure and remove
the fluid supply, since due to the removal of the nozzle unit the fluid will leak. Unscrew the nozzle unit
and remove the tappet guidance (1+2) and press the nozzle insert out of the tappet guidance (3).
Place the new nozzle insert on the tappet guidance and screw that into the nozzle adjustment nut.
Then perform the adjust-process as described in 2.3. Connect the system again with the fluid supply
and the pressure. The system is now ready to start the dispensing. Please clean the nozzle insert
thoroughly and control its cleanness under the microscope if available.

2.6.1. Change of the tappet

To change the tappet Screw off the nozzle unit from the fluid box. Open the two allen keys
(screwdriver no.2) and take off the fluid box carefully by pulling it parallel to the tappet. Caution: Avoid
in any case canting of the fluid box (may cause breakage of the tappet or harm the tappet sealing).
Carefully attach the tappet changing tool on the centering bolt of the tappet centering screw until the
tool snaps in the head of the centering bolt. Loosen the tappet centering screw by turning to the left
with constant pressure on the tappet centering screw (parallel to the tappet) and screw it off. Remove
tappet centering screw from the tappet housing. Pick the old tappet with two fingers and pull it out of
the actuator housing parallel to the tappet. Potential jamming of the tappet part inside the actuator with
the tappet spring inside the actuator housing will be avoided by precautious moving back and forth
and applying tension at the same time. Remove the tappet CT15/CT10/CT7 from package. Caution:
the top of tappet is covered with grease. Implement the tappet carefully into the opening of the
actuator housing with the greased part first. By using the tappet changing tool the centering bolt is now
extremely carefully screwed into the actuator housing against the pressure of the spring and
tightened. Carefully pull out the tappet changing tool parallel to the tappet. Mount fluid box and nozzle
unit in reverse order to the above description.
Your valve is now ready and after the Adjust-Procedure you can continue with your dispensing
process.
It is recommended to change the tappet sealing, which is inside the fluid box, in appropriate intervals.
It is mandatory if you can apply the tappet sealing over the tappet without any resistance. Please use
the nozzle insert squeeze out tool, which was accompanying your valve.

3. Cleaning
Common details
Never use wire brushes or machines that cause a surface abrasion. Unsuitable cleaning fluids may
damage the valve.
Before using extremely aggressive cleaning liquids or solvents please check, that all fluid contacting
parts are resistant to them.

3.1. Cleaning methods

For the cleaning of the MicroDispensingValve (especial for the fluid contacting parts), VERMES
Technik recommends the Cleaning Tool Kit (art. no.1010320) which consists out of
Fluid box cleaners Cleaning rods Fluidic brushes
(Article no: 1010090) (Article no: 1010313) (Article no: 1010314)

Table 3: CleaningToolKit.

For pre-cleaning purposes, please remove the dispensing fluid, connect the MicroDispensingSystem
to an empty and clean cartridge and push the residues of dispensing fluid with pressurized air through
the system.
The cleaning of the MicroDispensingValve can be carried out via:
• Rinsing with an appropriate cleaning media
To remove residues of the dispensed fluid, please rinse the system with an appropriate cleaning
media (please refer to the material safety data sheet of the dispensed media and suitable cleaning
suggestions). For this, equip the MicroDispensingSystem with a cartridge filled with an appropriate
cleaning solution and execute some free jetting (F1) and dispensing cycles.
• Cleaning of the single parts
Please demount the system carefully according 2.2 If necessary, you can wipe off the actuator with a
cloth which is damped with isopropanol (IPA).
The single parts can be pre-cleaned by pushing pressurized air through them. Rinse them with
isopropanol and place the parts into a large enough beaker. Fill sufficient isopropanol into the beaker
and place it for 10 minutes in an ultrasonic bath. Following this strategy, leads in general to a sufficient
cleaning of the single parts. Now you can dry them on air or with compressed air and reassemble
them again.
If the single components are heavily polluted, you have to pre-clean the components mechanically
(this procedure is also advised for not so heavily polluted components). For this pre-cleaning, please
use our Cleaning Tool Kit. Please refer to the pictures below regarding which part to clean with which
device. This procedure should be followed by cleaning the single parts in isopropanol in an ultrasonic
bath. NI’s can be cleaned and pierced through with special NI wires (Attention: pay attention to the
diameter of the nozzle insert and the NI wire!).

4. MicroDispensingValve MDV 3200A

4.1. MDV modules
The MicroDispensingValves of the MDV 3200A series are constructed modularly.
They consist of four basic modules:
• Actuator system / 1
• Electronics / Sensor electronics / 2
• Fluidic module / 3
• Nozzle unit / 4

1
3
2
4
1

Figure 6: MicroDispensingValve MDV 3100A

Electronic module contains the electronics for sensor and actuator signals. On top of the
electronics module body you will find the plugs for actuator and sensor cable; these will be
connected to the control unit.
The actuator system is the heart of the MicroDispensingValves. It contains the sensor the piezo
actuator and the mechanics for the tappet drive. The housing and the mechanics are
encapsulated to avoid contamination and intrusion of humidity.
Fluidic module (in short: fluid box) is separated thermally from the actuator system and easily to
demount by loosening two screws. This allows a stand-alone cleaning procedure.
The Nozzle Unit can be easily changed and cleaned according to the approved VERMES
Technik “Quick Change” technology. So you are able to go into new dispense tasks fast. The
nozzle insert is a consumable you can easily change by yourself.

4.3. Special features of the MicroDispensingValve

4.3.1. Normally Open
In non-operative mode, without impressed voltage, the valve is opened. However, this is usually not a
problem regarding the leaking of media. On the one hand side high viscous fluids leak very slowly or
not at all, on the other hand side you have to take care that the supply pressure is reduced to ambient
pressure before shutting down the control unit.

4.3.2. Quick-Change Concept

The “Quick-Change” (which consists of nozzle adjusting nut, tappet guidance, o-ring seal N, nozzle
insert) allows a very fast exchange of the nozzle unit and nozzle insert. The electronic helps to adjust
the nuzzle unit precisely and fast to the nozzle insert.

4.3.3. Modularity
All MicroDispensingSystems are built strictly modular. Single components can be exchanged fast. So
time and costs for repair can be remarkably reduced.

4.3.4. All installation positions possible

Our MicroDispensingValves are operable in all installation positions. So the integration of a
MicroDispensingValve in your production process is very easy.

4.3.5. Easy handling

The valve can be controlled in all functions from a subordinate PC-workstation. The control unit can be
build-in in your already existing setup.

4.4. Materials applied

Only high-quality materials are used to manufacture the MicroDispensingSystem.
• All fluid contacting parts consist of high-alloyed rust-proof and acid-resistant stainless steels as well
as modifications of the high performance polymer families of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and of
polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE).
• You can get sealings alternatively in NBR, EPDM, VITON or ISOLAST or silicone.
• Our nozzle inserts can be adapted to your particular dispense media and consist alternatively of
various materials like stainless steel, plastics, ceramics or technical glass.

The LCD display indicates 16 characters each in two lines. In the upper line, the current menu item is
displayed. The lower line shows the actual parameter setting for dispensing according to the numeric
value which can be changed. Additionally the request for valve maintenance, change of nozzle insert
and tappet change is displayed.

5.3.2. Maintenance Indication

With the newly integrated functionality “cycle count” it is now possible to clearly define the
maintenance intervals (the current interval can be viewed under “Maint. Cycle” in the status menue Æ
Figure 12). The increasing number of cycles is indicated via growing bars on the display (in total: 8
bars, 1 bar refers to 12.5 %). If 95% of the given service interval are achieved, the red LED
“maintenance” will be blinking and “SERVICE” will appear in the display (10 sec each). Reaching
100% of the given service interval, “SERVICE” will continuously appear in the display and the red LED
will keep blinking.
Please contact the service at VERMES Technik for maintenance of the MDV 3200A.
If 110 % and 120 % of the given service interval are achieved, the red LED will keep blinking faster
(“SERVICE” remains on the display). You need to send the actuator system urgently to VERMES
Technik for maintenance!
Maintenance for nozzle and tappet can be imaged on the display as well. To view the state of

maintenance interval for the tappet, press on the control panel. By pressing , you can see the
state of maintenance interval for the nozzle.

5.6.1. Trigger methods

1. using the key panel: After pressing the key , a trigger pulse with the pre-set values starts.
2. using EIA-232: You can also initiate the trigger pulse with the command VALVE:OPEN.
3. using a PLC signal with predefined Open Time: through this signal a dispensing impulse is initiated
which follows the preset parameters. The maximum frequency is 200 1 / s.
4. using a PLC signal and the External-Control-Mode: If the Open Time is set to “external“ a
dispensing impulse with the following properties is started. For Raising, Falling, Delay, Needle Lift and
Number of Pulses the preset values will be considered. The Open Time lasts as long as the signal is
set to logic 1. If the signal is reset to logic 0 then the valve closes and the next impulse will be
accepted

shown as 1 / 10 ms (so 10 equals to 1 msec). The „Falling“ is shown as
1/100 ms (so 100 equals to 1,00 msec) Do only use whole positive
numbers.
If you want to use the External-Control-Mode enter “EXTENRAL” for the
Open Time. The pulse parameters you entered before with
TRIGGER:SET, will not be overwritten. This means, with VALVE:OPEN
<Rising>, <Open Time>, <Falling>, <Needle Lift>, <Number of Pulses>,
<Delay> entered pulse parameters expire after this dispense series and
are not accessible any more. If you want to use the pulse parameters
several times, you have to use the command VALVE:OPEN:<Rising>,
<Open Time>, <Falling>, <Needle Lift>, <Number of Pulses>, <Delay>
each time as well. Alternatively set the pulse parameters with
TRIGGER:SET and recall them with VALVE:OPEN as often as wanted.

7. Warranty, Maintenance and Return

7.1. Warranty and Maintenance

MDV serial no. "G" or higher (i.e. 1GU12)

This document "Warranty and Maintenance Conditions" corresponds to
MicroDispensingSystem MDS 3200A, existing out of the main components
MicroDispensingValve MDV 3200A and MicroDispensingControl Unit MDC 3200A.
WARRANTY: Warranty refers to the reliability of a system MDS 3200A under conditions of
ordinary use.
Warranty of the valve MDV 3200A covers all defects that could arise within a maximum period
of 6 months or 80 million shots (whatever comes first) after the date of delivery.
Warranty of the control unit MDC 3200A covers all defects that could arise within 12 months
after the date of delivery.
Should the MDV 3200A or the MDC 3200A malfunction within the period of warranty, VERMES
Technik will carry out the repair free of charge. The failure has to be notified in written form to
VERMES Technik.
Is MDS 3200A run with single parts (e. g. cables, heating devices) not produced by VERMES Technik,
the warranty for the MDS 3200A will expire. If additional single parts which are not produced by
VERMES Technik are indispensable, the single parts can be approved by VERMES Technik in written
form and the warranty for the MDS 3200A will not be affected. Defects caused by these single parts
will not be covered by warranty (repair costs need to be covered by the customer).
MAINTENANCE: Maintenance refers only to the actuator system ( = valve MDV 3200A. The
actuator system has to be sent to VERMES Technik after every 80 million shots for regular
maintenance (please refer to delivery conditions below). Before sending the system the
customer has to send an order to VERMES Technik. In the order confirmation VERMES Technik
will advice the date for the maintenance. After maintenance the warranty period is elongated
for further 50 million shots, with a maximum of 6 month. It is recommended by VERMES
Technik to maintain the valve at least once a year.
A defect which arises within 50 million shots after a regular maintenance and is not caused by
the operator will be fixed by VERMES Technik exempt from charges for the owner.
If a defect occurs beyond warranty and the customer met the maintenance intervals, the arising repair
costs will not exceed the cost of a regular maintenance. Warranty is given for repaired single parts for
50 million shots.
The customer can decide if a regular maintenance should be associated. The elongation of warranty
after maintenance is as described above.
If the last maintenance dates back more than 50 million shots and a defect occurs, the customer has
to carry the costs for the repair depending on material and time base.
If a valve shows severe wear out and it is foreseeable, that even after maintenance a drawback in
dispensing accuracy can not be prevented, VERMES Technik will inform the customer. If the
maintenance still shall be carry out, no additional warranty will be granted.
CONSEQUENTIAL COSTS, SHIPPING AND HANDLING CHARGES: VERMES Technik will not
cover any consequential costs caused by system failures. Freight charges have to be carried
by the owner, except a repair is necessary within the period of warranty.
SHIPPING: For maintenance send only the actuator system ( = valve without fluid box, without tappet).
For repair reason send the whole system ( = valve, without tappet, control unit and cables).
In all cases the correctly filled-in decontamination declaration has to be sent with the system.

VTK-FE-UM-25 Revision 2 55
MANUAL MDS 3200A

7.2. Return
Each MicroDispensingSystem which has been in contact with toxic chemicals, human body liquids or
other harmful materials has to be decontaminated before being returned to VERMES Technik.
This declaration is absolutely necessary even for unused MicroDispensingSystems. In case the
MicroDispensingSystem was used, the liquids, which were in contact with the valve, need to be
communicated in written form in the decontamination declaration to VERMES Technik. The signed
certificate needs to be fixed outside on the transport packing.
If a rented or lended MicroDispensingSystem is returned uncleaned it will be sent back to the
customer. The rent period is automatically extended until the system arrives properly cleaned at
VERMES Technik. The additional rent time will be charged to the customer. Alternatively VERMES
Technik will assign an external company to clean and decontaminate the MicroDispensingSystem.
The customer will bear the costs.
Any unclean MicroDispensingSystems which are returned for maintenance or repair reasons will also
be sent back to the customer on his costs.
In any case the customer is liable for defects caused by insufficient decontamination. This includes
explicitly damage to persons and property.
Each returned system needs to be accompanied by a “status-sheet”. All information about the system
has to be provided by the customer to VERMES Technik (e. g. system returned for maintenance, for
repair, dispensing parameter, a.s.o.).
