The joints covered by this specification shall be designed and rated for operation under the
environmental conditions as detailed in General Requirements document KM-EPM-D-GEN-
GENERAL and KM-EPM-D-CBL-GENERAL.
The sealant shall be pre-coated inside the Heat Shrinkable components and activated by the Heat
applied, to shrink the components, which shall be in excess of 125°C or applied in tape form.
Uniform adhesive flow from the adhesive Heat Shrink component onto the adjoining surfaces will be
used as an indicator that shrinking is complete, and therefore, the adhesive must be suitable for this
purpose.
The joints shall be designed manufactured and tested to meet the requirements of latest version of
IEC 60502 and other relevant standards listed in Section 2 of this specification. Joints must be
insensitive to cable manufacturers tolerances allowed under IEC 60502.
The installed cable joints shall meet the electrical ‘System Parameters’ in Clause 3 and, the
‘Environmental Conditions’ in Clause 4 of this specification.
The continuous current rating and short circuit fault ratings of the joint shall be in accordance with the
appropriate cable specification.
All completed 33kV joints must have a certified fault withstand rating and earth fault withstand
rating. The certificates shall have been issued by an independent test authority and the method of test
shall be defined.
Following pre-requisites (minimum but not limited to) must be ensured by the contractor prior to
installation of the cable joints, and they shall be mentioned clearly on the installation manual of kit
supplier:
− Safe & secure working environment,
− Jointers shall be well trained & KM certified for installation works and towards the system
voltage, the cable(s) involved and the type of accessories and methodology,
− In order to prepare for the specific job, jointers shall be aware of the function of each of cable
joint components specified in the installation instruction/manual, as part of the instruction,
− The complete cable joint kit shall be available at site with all components listed in the kit
content sheet which shall be part of the kit box,
− Ultimate care to avoid any damage to the products, materials, tools & equipment during the
entire work period,
No work on cable preparation and jointing shall begin until the installer is confident that all parts and
materials are available and are the adequate type and size to complete the installation. These shall be
checked against the kit content sheet (parts list). Components with an expired ‘use by’ date shall be
rejected. Any required special installation tools shall be checked to ensure that they are correct for the
intended application and are in good working order.
The joint shall accommodate cross core jointing. Joint dimension shall be such that after removing
inner sheath of the cables each core shall have a minimum length of 620mm either side of the centre
of the joint or total 1120mm minimum if the centre is shifted. Joints galvanized steel case shall have
sufficient diameter to accommodate three insulated cores and earthed tinned copper braid 70 sqmm
cross section.
Joint kits shall be delivered with all required components to produce a complete cable joint including
mechanical connectors to suit specified conductor. Those components shall be listed with quantities
of each item on the paper named (Kit Content Sheet). That paper (kit content sheet) shall be included
in each package box with clear indication about components inside and stating their name, size,
length, quantity, etc. of each component.

The insulation reinstatement over cores and connectors shall be of heat shrink type using stress
control tube, insulating tube, semi-conducting tube, non-conductive breakout, void filling tape and
insulating tape.
Over the connector a high dielectric constant heat fusing mastic shall be applied to smooth the
electrical gradient in this area. Usage of tapes and mastics only over the connector area is strictly
forbidden.
Before applying the high dielectric mastic, the inner semi-conductive layer of the cable (around the
conductor) must be reinstated around the mechanical connector by applying a semi-conductive tape.
All tubing components, and moulded components and sealant (adhesive) shall comply with the latest
version of ENA TS 09-13. All components shall be tested as per latest version of ENA TS 09-13.

5.7 Breakout
A non-conductive breakout shall be provided at the crutch area at both ends of the joint to prevent
longitudinal propagation of the water and moisture into the joint.
Type test may also be carried out according to other international standards with additional
KAHRAMAA conditions or requirements which will be discussed before carrying out any tests and
will be mutually agreed between manufacturer and KAHRAMAA. KAHRAMAA has the right to
add/alter/modify any tests maintaining the KM right in order to ensure reliability and safety concerns.
Bidder shall submit certified copies of type test certificates covering proposed cable joints to be
supplied. Type tests certificates/reports may be considered acceptable if they are in compliance with
the relevant International Standards, KAHRAMAA’s requirements (if any), agreed test matrix and
procedure and the following:
a. The certified type test report shall not be older than 10 years and there shall not be
change in design, source of raw material and all other relevant material of the type tested
and offered joints,
b. Type tested cable joint shall be of equal or higher voltage designation.
c. Same factory location and same manufacturing process of the type tested and offered
joints,
d. Same raw material of the type tested and offered joints.
e. Fully compliance with range of approval as per clause 7 of IEC 60502-4.)
Where items of a similar design to that previously tested are offered, consideration may be given to
accepting previous Type Test reports. Bidders are requested to substantiate their claims of equivalent
Type Test performance with written engineering evaluation, where full Type Test documentation is
not submitted for each of the items offered. Such evaluation must provide all relevant details such that
KAHRAMAA can establish the validity of existing Type Tests.
KAHRAMAA may request repeat of Type Tests to prove compliance to this technical specification
where the materials used in the equipment offered and/or the manufacturing process and/or the place
of manufacture or the referenced International Standards have changed since the equipment was
originally type tested, the Bidder shall submit for approval type test procedures and schedules for
performance of the same.
