INTRODUCTION
Nurses are responsible for monitoring patients' health, assessing their needs, collaborating
with physicians, developing personalized care plans, and educating patients and the public
about health condition.
Nursing originated around 300 AD, involves care for individuals, families, and communities,
with Florence Nightingale's hygiene improvements during the Crimean war standards.
Qualification to become a registered nurse and midwife in India, one must complete a
relevant nursing course like GNM or BSc from a recognized institution and register with the
state nursing council.
Shift work in healthcare involves rotating shifts for continuous patient care, potentially
impacting sleep patterns and worker well-being.
Challenges of Nurses :
• Staffing shortages
• Long shift work
• Emotional strain
• Inadequate resources
• Administrative burdens
• High expectations
• Pressure of providing quality care
Vangelova,K et al. (2021) The study found that about 90 % of the nurses felt under strain and experienced emotional
dissonance while working with patients. Work-related stress, night work and long working hours were related to self-
rated emotional and physical exhaustion and poor health.
Safarpour H et al. (2018) The results of this study show the importance of nurses’ occupational stress on their job
satisfaction and performance. In addition, the demographic variables were influential on the main variables in this
study.
Lin, P et al. (2015) The study stated that the nurses who worked rotating shifts tended to experience work-related stress,
but their stress levels improved if they had at least 2 days off after their most recent night shift and if they were not
scheduled to work 7 consecutive days.
Kakemam, E et al. (2019) The study reveals that the high prevalence of occupational stress demonstrates the extent of
the issue, despite recent reforms. Nurses reported issues with shift work, staffing, pay, workplace discrimination,
management, policy and excessive workloads.
METHODOLOGY
Objectives :
• To examine the occupational stress of nurses.
• To identify the impact of occupational stress on nurses job performance.
• To explore interpersonal relationships and job performance of nurses.
Variables :
• Occupational Stress - Occupational stress in nurses refers to the strain and pressure they experience due to
job-related factors like heavy workloads, long shifts, emotional demands, and exposure to challenging
situations. This stress can impact their physical health, emotional well-being, and job satisfaction.
• Job Performance - Nurses' job performance refers to the effectiveness, efficiency, and quality of care they provide
to patients, including their ability to execute nursing tasks, communicate effectively, collaborate with colleagues,
and adapt to various healthcare situations.
METHODOLOGY
Method :
Quantitative Method
Census Method
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
1. To find the stress influencing factor and enhancing the work environment.
