QUESTION 1 [29 MARKS]

Calculate the horizontal forces and maximum average shear stress in each of the shear walls in
the Y-direction for the braced structure shown in Figure Q1 below
• Blocks A - 6 storeys tall, with a 3 x 3 m lift
• Block B – 4 storeys tall.
Floor-to-floor level is 2. 7 m. Assume design ultimate wind pressure = 0.75 kN/m2 .

QUESTION 2 [19 MARKS]

Check the adequacy of the gusset plate acting as a splice plate for the connection shown in
Figure Q2 below. The loads shown are ultimate and assume Grade S355JR steel.

QUESTION 3 [12 MARKS]

Elaborate in your own words, on actions that could be taken to remedy the effects of fire on a
steel structure, including at least 3 insulation methods, the motivation of choice, and general
performance.
