SYNOPSIS

Title: DREAMERS
Author: YUYI MORALES

We are resilience. We are hope. We are dreamers!

It is a story of a mother and her son that began their life in America after living in Juarez.
Their journey takes us on a ride through the beauty of the language of books.
Both Mexican and American culture are represented in this book. Also, both Spanish and
English are referenced in this book.
Yuyi and Kelly find themselves having to stay in America after visiting an elderly relative.
They are stuck in the city they know nothing about and surrounded by a language they
cannot understand. The two then find themselves becoming a part of the community
through children’s literature and picture of books.
Yuyi Morales describes crossing a bridge to the other side at which point she and Kelly
became immigrants. She describes the difficult transition period in which she was
surrounded by an unfamiliar language and has trouble assimilating, which she referred to
as making mistakes. During this time Yuyi and Kelly discover a local library, when they
learned the language and books became their life.
This is about making home in a new place. Yuyi and her son Kelly’s passage was not
easy, and Yuyi spoke no English whatsoever at the time. But together they found an

unexpected, unbelievable place, the public and local library. Book by book they untangled
the language of this strange land, and learned to make their home within it.
It's a story about family. And it’s a story to remind us that we are all dreamers, bringing
our own gifts wherever we roam. Beautiful and powerful at any time but given particular
urgency as the status of our own dreamers become uncertain, this is a story that is both
topical and timeless.
Dreamers is a celebration making our home with the things we always carry, our
resilience, our dreams, our hopes and history. It's the story of finding our way in a new
place of navigating an unfamiliar world and finding the best part of it. In dark times, it’s a
promise that we can make better tomorrow.
