Actuators + Circuit identification + Circuit Analysis

QUESTIONS

Please answer the questions clearly and briefly (preferably in a couple of sentences) in your
own words.

1. Which type of linear actuators are used if an extra-long stroke is needed?

2. For linear actuators of cylinder-piston type, what is the precaution to be taken if the speed
of the piston is above 0.1 m/s?

3. What is the range of safety factor values used in the industry in specifying the maximum
operating load for the piston rods?

Consider a properly operating hydraulic power circuit with well-selected components, shown in the
figure in its default configuration.
Left 10 Right
4. Give the full name for each of the ten main
circuit components marked with numbers on the
7 8 9
circuit diagram.

The operator pushes down the button of component

Briefly explain the status and/or operation of the

system components answering the questions below.

6. In which direction will component 10 move?

7. When will fluid pass through component 7? M 2

8. When will component 8 operate?

9. When will fluid pass through component 4?

Now, the operator takes his/her hand off the button

of component 6: Again, briefly explain the status and/or operation of the components by answering
the questions below.

10. What will be the active position of component 5?

11. In which direction will component 10 operate?

12. What will component 7 do? Why?
13. What will component 8 do? Why?

14. When will component 4 allow fluid to pass through?

15. What is the function of component 9?
16. When will fluid pass through component 3?

Actuators + Circuit identification + Circuit Analysis

PROBLEM 1: (Objective: Determination of required specifications for linear actuators)

A mass of 2100 [kg] is to be accelerated upwards against gravity,

from rest to 0.25 [m/s] over a distance of 90 [mm]. The
m=2100 [kg]
maximum pressure available at the cylinder is 190 [bar] and the
back pressure on the piston rod side is 6 [bar]. The mass of the g
piston and the piston rod can be neglected. Assuming constant

1100 [mm]
acceleration, determine suitable standard piston and piston rod po = 6
sizes (see the table in lecture notes). You may assume a buckling [bar]
safety factor of 2.5.
pi = 190
[ [bar]

PROBLEM 2: (Objective: Analysis of a typical hydraulic power circuit with linear actuator and
meter-out flow control circuit)

Consider the fluid power circuit shown in the figure.

Relief valve: Actuator:

p1
Setting = 90 bar Piston diameter = 60 [mm]
p2 Rod diameter = 35 [mm]
Pump:
VD=12 [mL/rad] Flow control valve:
np=1480 [rpm] CD = 0.7
Oil density = 860 [kg/m3]
V=0.92
m=0.80 W=6000 [N]

a) In this circuit, the function of the parallel combination of the variable throttle and the
bypass check valve is the same as the function of a pressure control valve. Which one is it?

b) Determine the constant lowering speed of the 6000 [N] suspended weight for the flow
control valve openings of 8, 12, and 20 [mm2]. You may neglect the pressure override of the
relief valve.

c) Interpret your result in the case of the flow control valve opening of 20 [mm2].
