- You can represent a function in a table, in a graph, or as an equation. The graph of a linear
function is a straight line.
- You can compare functions in different representations by looking at the properties of
functions: the constant rate of change and the initial value.
The constant rate of change, or the slope is calculated by “rise/run”
6 The graph of a function is a line that passes through the coordinates (2, 11) and (8, 14).
a) Which shows how to find the rate of change for the function?
8−2 14 − 11 14 − 8 11 − 2
A. B. C. D.
14 − 11 8−2 11 − 2 14 − 8
A B

9 Maria is renting kayaks from a local shop that charges a $10 fee, plus an hourly rate of $7.50.
For how long can Maria rent the kayak if she pays a total of $70?
A. 6 hours B. 7 hours C. 8 hours D. 9 hours
10 The gasoline mileage for two cars can be compared by finding the distance each car traveled and the
amount of gasoline used. The table shows the distance that car M traveled using x gallons of gasoline.
The graph shows the distance, y, that car P traveled using x gallons of gasoline.
Based on the information in the table and the graph, compare the approximate miles per gallon of car M
to car P.
A. The two cars have the same milliages.
B. Car P has a slightly greater miliage than that of car M.
C. The car M can travel a further distance than the car P when they use the
same amount of gasoline.
11 The weight of Abe’s dog can be found using the expression 2(x + 3), where x is the number of weeks.
The weight of Karen’s dog can be found using the expression 3(x + 1), where x is the number of weeks.
Will the dogs ever be the same weight?
A. Yes, the two dogs will be the same weight after 3 weeks.
B. Yes, the two dogs will be the same weight after 5 weeks.
C. No, Abe’s dog will always be heavier than Karen’s dog.
D. No, Karen’s dog will always be heavier than Abe’s dog.
12 Dominique and Ella are comparing whose jet traveled faster. The graph shows the relationship between
the total distance Dominique traveled and the time in hours. The distance Ella traveled after x hours can
be represented by the equation y = 550x.
Who, if anyone, traveled at a faster speed? Explain.
13 The number of bottles a machine fills is proportional to the number of minutes the machine operates.
The machine fills 250 bottles every 20 minutes. Create a graph that shows the number of bottles, y, the
machine fills in x minutes.
Practice test #2
1 Which of the following is the definition of a function?
A. A functon whose graph is not a straight line
B. The slope of a line.
C. The value of the output, when the input is 0, or the y-intercept of the graph of a line.
D. A relation in which each input, or x-value, has exactly one output, or y-value.
2 A public parking garage charges $5, plus an additional $2 per hour.
Write the equation for the line in slope-intercept form.
A. y = 2x + 5 B. y = 5x + 2 C. y = -2x + 5 D. y = 5x - 2
3 Which function has a greater constant rate of change?
A. Function A has a greater rate of change. B. Function B has a greater rate of change.
C. The two functions have the same slopes. D. None of these above.
4 Drag the tiles to match each equation to its number of solutions. Each tile may be used only once.
2(3x – 1) = 6x – 2
2(3x – 1) = –6x – 2
5 How would you describe the graph of the function in interval 2? Sellect all that apply.
6 Is the relation shown below a function? Use the graph below to justify your response.
(0, 0), (2, 0), (2, 2) and (3, 4)
9 Filipo is building a rectangular sandbox for his younger brother. The length of the sandbox is 1 foot
longer than twice the width of the sandbox. The perimeter of the sandbox is 29 feet.
a) Which equation could be used to determine w, the width, in feet, of the sandbox?
A. 𝑤 + 𝑤 + 2 = 29 B. 𝑤 + 2𝑤 + 1 = 29
C. 2𝑤 + 2(𝑤 + 2) = 29 D. 2𝑤 + 2(2𝑤 + 1) = 29
10 Adam works at a bakery. He uses 1/8 of his flour supply to make bread and 3/4 of his flour supply to
make other baked goods. If Adam used 21 pounds of flour, how much flour did he have in his supply?
A. 22 pounds B. 24 pounds C. 34 pounds D. 63 pounds
11 Sophia records the heights of the teammates competing in the high jump event and the heights of their
best jumps.
Is the height of a teammate’s jump a function of his or her height? Explain
A. Yes, the height of a temperature’s jump is a function of her height. As the height of the teamate
increases, the height of their jump tends to increase.
B. Yes, the height of a temperature’s jump is a function of her height. As the height of the teamate
increases, the height of their jump tends to decrease.
C. No, the height of a temperature’s jump is NOT a function of her height. As the height of the teamate
increases, the height of their jump tends to increase.
D. No, the height of a temperature’s jump is NOT a function of her height. As the same height of the
teamate of 5’5”, there are two different heights of their jump.
12 Draw lines to match each equation on the left to its number of solutions on the right.
13 The weight of Abe’s dog can be found using the expression 2(x + 3), where x is the number of weeks.
The weight of Karen’s dog can be found using the expression 3(x + 1), where x is the number of weeks.
Will the dogs ever be the same weight?
