I. Flow of Activity

In our course subject SW 121 – Community Education and Training, we are tasked
individually to conduct a facilitation activity that will showcase our facilitation skills with our
chosen sector as our participants. Preparations for the activity were made beforehand. Upon
informing the chosen participant, facilitator began the planning and crafting the objectives,
programs, and the activity’s expected outcome. During the planning stage, I consider the mode
of delivery, the techniques that I’ll employ, and the duration of the activity. I conducted a brief
dry run on the day before the activity in order to ensure that I’ll get to grasp the nuances of
facilitating. The dry run went smoothly. Due to an unfavorable weather condition, the
facilitation activity began 30 minutes later than the expected time. Nevertheless, the activity
proceeded smoothly.

The facilitation activity formally started with the presenter welcome greetings, followed
by an invocation and the singing of the Philippine National Anthem. All of which are presented
through audio visual presentation. The preliminary activities were completed by explaining the
purpose of the activity and overview of the activity, the discussion proceeded shortly
afterwards. The facilitation activity was conducted via face-to-face at Purok 4 Barangay San
Juan St., Sto. Domingo, Albay.

The facilitator of the activity, Mr. Jonathan B. Bigueras, discussed the importance of
hand hygiene, its usage against combating germs, the handwashing etiquettes and things to
remember when washing your own hand through the use of a PowerPoint Presentation. His
researches and prior experience in this kind of talk, his insights were also discussed. The
articulate speaker has also given his participants ideas and tips on becoming one of the Health
Warriors in our community. The participants actively joined the activity and ask relevant
questions that was also answered by the facilitator. The time allotted for the activity was
followed in accordance with the prepared flow of program. To conclude, the event was
successful and was commended by the participants as fun and informative.

IV. Reflection Paper

Facilitation Activity is where the participants are encouraged to ask questions while the
trainer moderates the discussion, takes steps to enhance the experience for the participants,
and gives suggestions. It always involves creating scenarios to aid in the acquisition and
retention of knowledge and skills that goes beyond the theoretical in dealing with a given
situation. Good facilitation of learning and their development are based on a sufficient abstract
knowledge of learning, the building of competence and of social beings as learners and builders
of their own capability. Understanding of the essential principles of learning and have
knowledge of human activity, which is based on a valid conception of learning, thus constitutes
one of the core competences of a facilitator.

During the Facilitation Activity, I got the chance to know more about myself and I
somehow experience what it feels like to become a facilitator of a certain sector. This learning
experience allowed me to apply the things that I have learned all throughout the semester in
our course subject SW 121 – Community Education and Training. As a first timer in facilitating,
I am challenge with bringing my participants together and create an atmosphere that makes it
possible for them to collaborate towards a common objective. While I’m in talking front of them
I had this thought that I should aim to give an impression to my participants that they are free
to open up their thoughts and contribute something relevant in our discussion, I also make
sure that everything that we’re doing is within the timeframe and ensure that our discussion will
not get sidetrack.

Those things above aid me in understanding and appreciating more the diversity of
people as learners. Also, this activity enables me to develop technique that can be used in
facilitating other sectors. Participants in different sectors may differ in terms of how we should
take our approach in drawing out their opinions and ideas. As life backgrounds of the
participants become gradually diverse, we must have the ability to act in accordance with the
capabilities of the learners and to respond to each learning necessities of different sectors. As
future social workers, we must be aware of learning from the theoretical and from the actual
application of it, because the learning process that you have to go through is relatively different
but I can say for sure that both are great chance to improve our competencies and at the same
time serve our clients with the highest form of service.
