Workshop: International Funding

and Residency Opportunities for Musicians

What is ‘touring artists’?

ü We are the German Mobility Information Point (MIP)

ü We inform and advise on the administrative challenges of working internationally
(visas, international taxation, health insurance, customs…)
ü To and from Germany: for artists who want to come to Germany temporarily, for
organizers/presenters inviting artists to Germany, for Germany-based artists who have
projects in other countries
ü We help artists who want to move to Germany or have recently moved to Germany
with the bureaucratic basics
ü We help Germany-based artists to identify sources of mobility funding

Ø Website: www.touring-artists.info
Ø Free consultation service
The Mobility Information Points

ü Other countries also have

offering similar services
ü Organized as a working group

What is mobility funding?

ü Public (or private) money to support artists to travel, usually internationally

Examples:

ü Grants to cover travel and transport costs for tours and other projects
ü Grants to stipends in connection to residency programs
ü Grants to cover travel costs to attend trade fairs and networking events
ü Training/education programs
ü Project funding to develop marketing and distribution strategies
ü Project funding for international cooperation projects
Where can you apply for mobility funding?

Outgoing Mobility (OM) Export →

ü Your residence country, region, or city/your country of nationality has programs to
support artists or cultural professionals to travel abroad
ü Most mobility funding is organized this way

Incoming Mobility (IM) → Import

ü Your destination country has programs to support artists or cultural professionals to
go to that country
ü Mostly in the context of residency programs, training programs, or (relocation)
programs for artists-at-risk
ü Go-and-see travel grants (for agents, managers, festival curators to attend an
important event)

Challenges when dealing with residency programs:

ü In some cases, residency programs don’t offer financial assistance or even demand
payment for their services
ü It can make sense to combine a residency program with another activity to have
access to outgoing mobility/export funding
ü Applying for an entry visa (depending on your nationality)
ü Attending residency programs with family members
