Introduction
HEARST TOWER
High-Tech Arcitecture Style
• High-tech architecture is a type of late modernist
architecture that emerged in the late 1970s.
• Utilizing advances in technology and building materials, it
emphasizes transparency in design and construction.
• High-tech often seen as being the link between modernism
and postmodernism.
• The main goals of this style is to communicate their form
and function honestly and transparently and it strives to evoke
an ever-dynamic sense of movement and change.
• Some of the most well-known architects identified with the
high-tech style are Norman Foster, Richard Rogers, Renzo Piano,
Michael Hopkins, and Jean Nouvel.
High-Tech Architecture Style
Characteristics
• Technology being the main feature of the building.
• Focus on strong, simplistic and transparent elements.
• The prominent display of the building's technical and functional components on the external
façade.
• Use of extensive straight lines and dramatic curves with vast glazing envelope to enable a direct
view from the exterior.
• Preference for lightweight materials and sheer surfaces.
• Hanging or overhanging floors.
• Some buildings in cooperate bright colours in an attempt to evoke sense of a drawing or
diagram.

Structural Form Materials

• Tensile structure, cross beams, • Involves use of materials associated
exposed support and maintenance with high tech industries of the
elements are important components of 1980s and 1990s such as
high-tech architecture. spaceframes, metal cladding and
• Spacious interiors with easy access to
composite fabric and materials and
floors.
• Implements sustainability elements to
extensive use of aliminuim, steel,
its buildings glass and to a lesser extent
concrete.
Structural Analysis
Structure were important aspect in this project as the architect aimed on
creating energy-conserving building

Material
Used in the project is glass and steel

Structure
• Three main elements;
• Diagrid system
• Mega columns
• Mega diagonal
• Columns that already existed
• Elevator core ( not a primary support)
Diagrid structure
Diagrid system
● Diagonal trusses
● Eliminates need for 609.6 m steel
● Covers 34 stories and 79525 m2
● No need of vertical beam
● Creates “bird’s mouth”

Connection (nodes)
● 2 types
● Interior and corner nodes
● Structurally purpose
● Architecturally purpose

Load
● Primary system (live)
● Diagrid system, mega columns, mega diagonal, the
spread to footing to the ground
● Secondary system (gravity)
● Elevator core to footing and ground
Spatial Analysis
Elevators
• Were shifted from the core of the building to the
corner

Facades visual analysis
The base : Hearst magazine building

It was designed by architect Joseph

urban in 1928 it was built in Art Deco
style which was common then

• 1) cast lime stone facades

• 2) the base’s northern and southern corners are
chamfered
• 3) a balustrade runs infront of the third story windows
supported by a shelf with notches
• 4) the base’s existing facades were retrofitted to meet
updated city seismic codes
• 5) the main entrance contains large archway flanked by
a pair of smaller rectangular doorways
• 6) the windows are tripartite window with fluted stone
pandels
Facades visual analysis
The tower: Hearst tower.
The tower’s facades uses a traingular framing pattern
known as diagrid

The arrangement of the diagrid creates chamfered bird’s

mouth at the corners of the building runs at 75 degree

The triangles comprising the diagonal are prefabricated

panels manufactured by steel each of triangles is 52 feet
tall
The columns are bolted

Glass coating to reduce solar radiation the glass has (low

E) coating that allows for internal spaces to be flooded
with natural light
The Physical Model

Physical Model
• The Model was made in a 1:1000 ratio to the real
building with dimensions 4.9 x 3.7 x 18.2 cm
• It was 3D printed with PLA material
