Rainbow Therapeutic Riding Center of Haymarket is the recipient of this

year’s $10,000 Youth in Philanthropy grant awarded by the teen leadership
program of Northern Piedmont Community Foundation of Warrenton.

Youth in Philanthropy offers guidance, money, and mentorship by funding a

local nonprofit organization via a grant application process.

The program challenges participants to demonstrate leadership, solve

problems, study proposals, manage budgets and work collaboratively,
according to a foundation release. This year’s cohort is comprised of high
school students from Fauquier, Culpeper, Rappahannock and Madison.

Rainbow Therapeutic Riding Center is “a place where individuals with

special challenges come together, and where victories, some dramatic, some
modest, but all significant, are joyously celebrated through equine therapy.”
Established in 1985, the center uses a wide variety of equine activities to
address participants’ individual needs, such as mental health and cognitive
disabilities.

U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-7th, released a statement last week after the
election of U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) as Speaker of the House of
Representatives.

“Congress has a long to-do list,” Spanberger said on Oct. 25. “We are now
nearly three weeks out from a government shutdown that would devastate
Virginia’s families, federal employees and economy, meaning it is urgent that
we pass bipartisan legislation as soon as possible to keep the federal
government open. We also need to pass a bipartisan 2023 Farm Bill, fund our
troops, strengthen our border security and combat fentanyl. And we must
provide strong support to our allies in Israel and Ukraine.”

On Friday, Spanberger called on Johnson to add another item to the to-do list
— finally enacting a measure banning members of Congress from trading
individual stocks. Her previously introduced bill, TRUST in Congress Act,
would require members, as well as their spouses and dependent children, to
put certain investment assets into a qualified blind trust during their entire
tenure in Congress, effectively banning them from trading individual stocks.

“Prior to assuming the role of Speaker of the House, U.S. Representative

Kevin McCarthy promised to hold a vote on legislation to ban Member stock
trading,” said Spanberger. “Unfortunately, there was no significant
movement on this issue … After weeks of dysfunction, our constituents are
eager to see their elected officials working for them. Bringing forward
legislation to ban Members of Congress from trading individual stocks will
demonstrate this commitment — and the American people will thank you.”

Spanberger launched a survey last week asking Virginians if the new

Speaker should bring a bill banning individual stock trading up for a vote. Of
more than 1,750 Virginians who responded, more than 95% responded yes,
according to a release from her office.

Author Jody Hobbs Hesler will read from her new short story collection,
“What Makes You Think You’re Supposed To Feel Better,” at 5 p.m. this
Friday at Revalation Vineyards in Madison County. She is a Virginia native
with roots near the Blue Ridge Mountains.

“I feel connected to these mountains,” she said. “I’ve lived in Virginia my

whole life. Something about our mountains defines me and fills me up. It’s
complicated. The land I feel so connected to has harbored generations of
injustices and cruelties through colonization, slavery and more, and I try to
reckon with some of that difficult history in my stories.”

Her new story collection focuses on the questions of connection and

belonging that the author is drawn to over and over again.

She noticed prevailing themes of a yearning for connection among lovers,

spouses and family members.

“Plus, all of them are set in Virginia, mostly Central Virginia with one
landing a little farther north, near Berryville and the West Virginia line,
where I spent a lot of time in my childhood,” Hesler said.

The latest reading in the Book Meets Wine World series invites guests to
arrive early and enjoy a glass of wine and the view of the Blue Ridge
Mountains. The author’s books will be available for purchase and signing
that evening. The event is free and open to the public for anyone age 21 and
older.
