1. PURPOSE
The object of this document is to establish the Color Coding for Piping Material depending on the
material chemical composition to be implemented by VENDORs (Material Manufacturer or Material
supplier), for an easy visual piping material identification during storage and after the components
have been cut for fabrication in Replace Emergency Stream Turbine Generators Project at Rastanura
Refinery.
2. SCOPE
The specification covers the color coding requirements for piping materials identification to be
implemented by the different VENDORs during the manufacturing and storage process at the
workshop and maintained by CONTRACTOR during storage, installation and construction activities at
site. Color coding does not need to be retained after painting.
The specification does not cover the color coding requirements to be implemented at site by
CONTRACTOR depending on the fluid, the service or the utility as per SAES-L-310 “Design of Plant
Piping” and SAES-B-067 “Safety Identification and Safety Colors.
If any inconsistency or conflict exists between this document and any other CONTRACTOR or
COMPANY documents, Industry Standards, Codes or Drawings it shall be the responsibility of the
VENDOR to bring it to the attention of the CONTRACTOR in writing for decision on which document
shall be followed. Until the resolution is brought to the attention of CONTRACTOR and decision on how
to proceed is made. Anyway, VENDOR shall be prepared to satisfy the most stringent at no additional
cost unless a CONTRACTOR pre- agreed written waiver is provided.

3. DEFINITIONS
Responsible to implement the color coding established in this specification during the manufacturing
process and storage of the different Piping Materials.
4.2 Contractor Vendor Inspector
Verify the adequate application of the requirements established in this document during the
manufacturing and storage of piping materials.
4.3 Contractor Materials/Equipment Receiving Inspector
Verify the adequate application of the requirements established in this document during receiving and
storage stages.
4.4 Color Coding Of Piping Materials
Color Code for Piping Material Identification identifies the most common grades of
materials used in piping systems.
Color markings are assigned on the basis of nominal chemical composition.

Each piping material shall be coded in accordance to this document and its attachment, and
shall have painted characters indicating the specification number of material if it is not
permanently marked or tagged according to the applicable material specification.
Prior to coding, surfaces shall be clean and free of dirt, loose scale, grease and oil. Paints used for
coding shall be durable, bright, and distinctive and shall not contain substances that would harmfully
affect the material at ambient or elevated temperatures. In particular, the marking material shall be
free of lead, sulfur, zinc, cadmium, mercury, chlorine, or other halogens. Identification by this method
is not a substitute for PMI testing or other permanent manufacturer’s marking, as is required by
applicable ASTM or other piping material specifications.
The principal purpose of this Color Code is to simplify identification of the pipe during
storage and after the pipe has been cut for fabrication or returned to stock.
Permanent manufacturer´s markings shall not be obscured by the Color
Code. Color coding shall be done by the material manufacturer or material
supplier.
If VENDOR has got or has developed his own Color Code identification system depending on
the specific materials and their chemical composition, prior to be implemented, it shall be
submitted for CONTRACTOR review and approval.
Dual grades shall be marked as “L Grade” color designation.
Paint marking shall be done with water-insoluble material that contains no substances that
harmfully affect the metal at ambient or elevated temperatures. In particular, the marking
material shall be free of lead, sulfur, zinc, cadmium, mercury, chlorine, or other halogens.
Marking materials for stainless steel and nickel alloy piping must not contain undesirable substances
such as chlorides, fluorides, sulfur, and low melting point metals.

Where pipe spool pieces are painted after completion of fabrication, further material color marking is
not necessary except where required by code or the purchaser. Spool pieces are generally marked with
special identifications (i.e. piece mark numbers) which identify the material on a paper document.
4.7 Valves
Color Coding of valves shall only apply for low temperature valves as per 04-SAMSS-003.
4.8 Gaskets
Spiral wound gasket shall be provided with handle for color coding and marking. These
color coding requirements are defined in “Gasket Identification Procedure”.
4.8.1 Location And Feature Of Marking
Pipe shall be marked with paint, dyes, tapes, etc., for its full
length. Fittings shall be stripped from bevel to bevel.
Each length of pipe and fittings shall have a 5 mm or larger stripe running full length. One
inch NPS and smaller may have a 3 mm stripe running full length.
Flanges shall be banded on the back of the flange at the intersection of the back face and
the hub.
Stud bolts shall be color marked both ends. Machine bolt shall be marked on head. Nut shall
be marked on one side.
Miscellaneous material shall be color marked so as to provide proper identity. The paint
shall not cover welding surfaces.
Figure 1. Miscellaneous
Table 1
COLOR CODE FOR MATERIAL IDENTIFICATION
- Any product manufactured by welding shall have an additional white stripe (except for Carbon
Steel, Electric Resistance Welded Pipe / API 5L Gr.B Welded Pipe).
- NACE Material shall be marked with an additional purple stripe.
- NACE + HIC or Additional Requirement 2 Material shall be marked with an additional intermittent
purple stripe.
- NACE Material or Additional Requirement 2 Material shall be marked with the additional stripe
independently if the material is permanently or not marked.
- For pipes, intermittent means one stripe of twenty centimeter each meter of length.
- For accessories, intermittent means stripe sections separate each five centimeters.
