Question (3): Design of a fixed base:

Given Data:
Nu = 50 t
- Nu = 50 t - Mu = 30 t.m - Qu = 30 t
- The column section is HEB 500 Mu = 30 t.m
2
- Fcu = 300 kg/cm

Qu = 30 t
The dimensions of the base plate:
a = 40 + 2×10 + 2×20 = 100 cm
b = 30 + 2×5 = 40 cm
- Check for concrete:
A1 = 40 × 100 = 4000 cm2
A2 = (40+10) (100+10) = 5500 cm2

A2 5500
√ =√ = 1.17 < 2 Ok
A1 4000

- For tp:
tp2
Φc Fy ( )b=M
4

assume that the maximum stress under the base

is 60 kg/cm2

C = (1/2) × (3K) × (60/1000) × (40) = 3.6 K

C = 3.6 K >>>>>>> 1

∑ FY = 0.0 60
kg/cm2

50 + T = C >>>>>>> 2

∑ M@0 = 0.0
30×100 + 50×25 = C×(75-K) >>>>>> 3

From 1, 3
30×100 + 50×25 = 3.6 K×(75-K)
4250 = 3.6 K (75-K)
3.6 K2 -270 K + 4250 = 0

K = 22.5 cm
C = 81 t
T = 31 t

𝑓` 45

60 67.5
f`= 40 kg/cm2

M = [40×22.5×40×11.25/1000] + [0.5×22.5×20×40× (2/3) ×22.5/1000]

M = 540 t.cm
tp2
Φc Fy ( )b=M
4

tp2
540 = 0.85 × 2.4 × ( ) 40
4

tp = 5.11 cm
Take tp = 5.20 cm
Use Plate (100 cm × 40 cm × 5.2 cm)
The fillet welds of the base:
- assuming that the column is milled
FD = Qu = 30 t
- assume 2 weld lines around the web are used with thickness s w to
resist the shear force

Shear = resistance
Q
= 0.77 Sw (0.4Fu)
L weld
30
= 0.77 Sw (0.4×3.6)
2×30

Sw = 0.45 cm
Use Sw = 0.6 cm = 6 mm

The anchor bolts:

- Tension (3 Bolts) – in the tension side
- Shear (6 Bolts)
A- Tension (T = 10.33 t)
use bolts ST37 Fy = 2.4 t/cm2
Fu = 3.6 t/cm2
Φt (0.66 Fub) As = 0.7 × 0.66 × 3.6 × As × 0.85 = 31 / 3
As1 = 7.3 cm2
B- Shear
FD = Qu = 30 t
From equation of shear
Qu = Øv (0.5 Fub) As (n) × 0.85
30 / 6 = 0.6 (0.5 × 3.6) As (1) × 0.85
As2 = 5.45 cm2
Asb ≥ As1 or As2 As one bolt > 7.3
Try 6 Bolts M36 ST37 (As = 8.17 cm2)
Use 6 Bolts M36 ST37
Design of stiffener:
- Stiffener:
nstiffner = 4 per side
hst = hc – 2 tfc = 30 – 2(1.6) = 26.8 cm
bst = bc – twc = 10 - 1 = 9 cm
- For tst from stiffness
𝑏st 25 9 25
= =
𝑡st √Fy tst √2.4

tst = 0.56 cm
use tst = 0.6 cm
Use 4 stiffeners (26.8 x 9 x 0.6 cm) each side
