PINION LOAD MONITORING SYSTEM (PLMS)

MOUNTING AND CALIBRATION PROCEDURE

CAUTION

This procedure is to be followed carefully, otherwise it will result in a destroyed sensor

DESCRIPTION

PLMS system D88, Système PLMS B36, C45, 150E

D60H, D80H, NS400 By the front of the pinion
By the back of the pinion

Refer to assembly drawing at the end of the procedure for detail of the items.

MOUNTING PROCEDURE

Clean carefully the face of the pinion and the 6 taps M10. Check the thread by screwing
a M10 screw.

Proceed in 3 steps :

A / Read the procedure hereafter to get a good understanding of the final mounting.

B / Proceed first to a blank mounting to check the final backlash

C / Proceed to final mounting

A / READING OF THE PROCEDURE

Read the procedure till the end to understand the different steps.

B / BLANK MOUNTING

This blank mounting, without grease and without adhesive thread locker, is necessary
to check the resulting gap between PLMS and pinion face. This gap MUST be between 3
and 5 mm. If this gap is not actual, addition of spacer washers is required between stub
adaptor and connection pipe.
To avoid jamming of the threads, use penetrating oil.
Steps B1 to B4 describe blank mounting. It is absolutely necessary to clean the
lubricating oil in the threads by using a degreasing product and to dry them by air blast
before to start with steps C1 to C4 which describe the definitive mounting with thread
locker.

B.1 : Check there is no scraps in the female and male threads. Degrease and air blast
the threads before mounting. Mount the stub adaptor on the connection pipe.

B.2 : Engage the pipe to the opposite male stub pre-mounted on the bottom of the bore
and tighten it.

B.3 Fit the PLMS sensor axis inside the threaded shaft, manually screw the PLMS
and tighten it, still manually.

FMA – Ind.G – 28.01.08 SPEC n° 103242.DOC

B.4 When the tightening becomes hard, it is imperative that the gap between the
PLMS and the pinion face be between 3 and 5mm.

Check the gap

from 3 to 5 mm

B.5 If the gap of 3 to 5 mm is not actual, add spacer washers between stub adaptor and
connection pipe according following procedure :

B.5.1 Unscrew the PLMS from the connection pipe,

B.5.2 Unscrew the stub adaptor from the connection pipe,
B.5.3 Add between 1 and 3 spacer washers between stub adaptor and connection
pipe depending on the adjustment to perform,
B.5.4 Mount the pipe + washer + adaptor assembly on the pinion,
B.5.5 Make a new blank mounting to check the proper adjustment of the gap.

Once this gap is obtained, it can be proceed to final assembly.

C / FINAL MOUNTING

C.1 See figure B.1. Clean and degrease the stub and both ends of the connection
pipe by using a degreasing product and dry by air blast. Mount definitely the stub
adaptor on the connection pipe with heavy duty thread locker (Loctite®2701 or
equivalent). Don’t forget the washers determined by blank mounting.

C.2 See figure B.2. Clean and degrease the male stub which receives the connection
pipe in the bottom of the shaft. Mount the pipe to the opposite male stub adaptor
with heavy duty thread locker (Loctite®2701 or equivalent).

C.3 See figure B.3. Clean and degrease the female stub and axis of the PLMS. Fit the
PLMS axis inside the threaded adaptor with medium thread locker (Loctite®243,
Loctite®262, or equivalent). Screw it manually until it mechanically stops. Check gap
between PLMS and pinion face is from 3 to 5 mm.

C.4 Then, unscrew carefully the locking screw (item 4) until it flush the counter nut (item 6)
provided. The locking screw must not be screwed with thread locker.

Once this locking screw is disengaged :

- DO NOT TURN THE PLMS
- DO NOT PULL THE PLMS

C.5 Push carefully on the PLMS sensor until it

comes in contact with the face of the pinion. It
must be naturally centered into place.

C.6 Fit the collar flange on the PLMS. And first

tighten the screws manually prior to make the
zero adjustment of the sensor. PLMS must be
free in rotation.

C.7 ZERO CALIBRATION OF THE SENSOR

Note: this calibration is to be made with NO LOAD on the pinion. If this calibration is made
on board, it will be made on one pinion only. Each pinion shall be loaded back after
calibration, prior to proceed with a next pinion.

Calibration by tension measurement :

1. Connect a 24 V DC supply to the PLMS (terminal + and -). Connect a 500 Ohms load
resistance in parallel between terminal O volt and the Measure.
2. Connect a volt meter to the PLMS terminal (terminal M and -)
3. Adjust the angular position of the PLMS sensor to obtain : 0 V +/ - 0.25 V
4. Tighten the collar flange locking screws gradually (by crossing method) and check the
measure is still inside the calibration range
5. Mount the bearing cover plate onto the PLMS sensor

Wire must be connected straight and tended to the junction box, to avoid any wire’s
twist on the PLMS during jacking operations.

In no case NOV/BLM will accept responsibility for any damage or accident resulting
from a bad connection or wire’s twist
