Analysis and Generalization

The vernier caliper has a higher percentage of error than the micrometer caliper. The
micrometer caliper is more suitable in measuring the coins for it produces a more accurate result than
the vernier caliper.

Questions and problems

1. Differentiate the Vernier and micrometer scales.

- The vernier caliper uses a sliding scale while the mircometer uses a rotating scale. They also
differ in parts. The Vernier has an upper jaw, lower jaw, lock screw and thumb screw, while the

mircometer has a spindle, anvil, barrel, and frame. The micrometer can more accurately measure the
thickness better than the Vernier.

2. Draw the figure for the mircometer readings below.

3. State some of the errors that one might make in measuring length using both the Vernier and
micrometer calipers.

- Mistakes that can occur is that when not looking carefully on measurements, mistakes can
happen and take in wrong information that is displayed. Not knowing how to properly use both calipers
can make you make errors in measuring objects. Also, mistaking the units of measurement in both
calipers will gravely give you a wrong measurement.

4. Determine the percentage of error for an observed value of 1.112x10^-5 if the standard value is
1.117x10^-5.
