Food waste is a prominent global issue that costs billions of dollars annually and emits tons of carbon. In Australia alone, $20 million of food is wasted each year, equaling $2000 per household. Most produce is discarded due to superficial qualities like appearance rather than edibility. Over 25 million hectares of land grows uneaten food that could feed many hungry people or be used for housing. At least 70% of Australia's 7.6 million annual tonnes of wasted food is still edible. Food waste is an expensive and unnecessary issue.

Food waste is a very prominent and pressing issue in modern-day
society. Food waste and its associated issues affect everyone in
Australia, and all around the globe. Food waste costs us billions of dollars every year, as well as emitting tons of carbon emissions. Food waste is a very expensive issue. In Australia alone, it can be estimated that 20 million dollars of food are wasted annually. Overall, this adds up to $2000 of wasted food per household. Lost or wasted food costs the global economy around $940 billion every year. The vast majority of fruits and vegetables that are grown, don’t even get the chance to be sold at supermarkets. Things like size, colour, shape, and visible blemishes all contribute to the marketability of a product. Tons of perfectly good and edible produce is getting thrown into landfill simply because it doesn’t meet a certain supermarkets standard. Over 25 million hectares of land is wasted on growing food that is not eaten. This land could be used for housing or any other need. We would be able to feed so many more currently hungry people if the produce grown on this land was given a chance. Of the 7.6 million tonnes of food we waste each year, at least 70% of it is entirely edible. Food waste is a very pressing issue in Australia, it costs us all money, time, and resources when it doesn’t have to be an issue at all.
