Equipment / Apparatus Needed:

1 pc Measure
1 pc Graduated Cylinder
Standard Color Chart
Potable Water
Sodium Hydroxide Pellets

Procedure

1. Fill the bottle with three (3) inches thick sand selected by the method of quartering
and dried to constant weight at a temperature of 105 deg C. To 110 deg C.
2. Add 3% sodium hydroxide in water solution up to the shoulder of the bottle.
3. Place the cover on the bottle and shake vigorously for one (1) minute, the last few
strokes being done with the bottle in the upright position to ensure that the level of
sand is horizontal after one (1) minute of shaking.
4. Allow to stand for 24 hours after which compare the color of liquid above the sand
with the standard color chart.
