Topic: Family
What is a Family?
Family is a group consisting of two parents and their children living together as a unit. Family
is defined as a specific group of people that may be made up of partners, children, parents,
aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. An example of a family is a set of parents living with
their children. The definition of family is the group of people who share common ancestors.
Types of families: Single parent family, Nuclear family, Sibling family, and Extended family.
1. The nuclear family is the traditional type of family structure. This family type consists
of two parents and children.

Advantage- Peace and harmony are very much essential for a pleasant family life. There is
fewer misunderstanding. Every member develops greater independence and self-sufficiency.
Conflict may rarely happen. Fast development of personality. Peace and harmony. Shared
responsibilities.
Disadvantage-lack of help with household chores. Extreme insecurity of children. Economic
disadvantage. Extreme loneliness. Loss of culture or heritage. Grandparents, parents, and
children will miss out on a close and strong relationship.
2. The single parent family consists of one parent raising one or more children on his
own. Often, a single parent family is a mother with her children.
Advantage - As a single parent, the entire authority of making the decisions will rest on you.
Teaches responsibility and independence. The expectations are easier to understand.
Disadvantage- Decrease in income. Uncomfortable changes in schedule. Poor academic
performance. Sense of loss. Negative feelings.
3. The extended family structure consists of two or more adults who are related, either
by blood or marriage, living in the same home.
Advantage- Family can help take care of the children. You can save money. More support
children. Socialization.
Disadvantage- lack of privacy and space. More Expenses. Less free time.
4. The Sibling family is one in which siblings live together with no parents. The siblings
become the adults

Advantage- The love and affection developed during early stages of life is the foundation of
later relationships between siblings
Disadvantage- Siblings are also of young age and don’t have enough experience to take care
of children.

1. Define the term family.
2. List three types of family and give two advantage and disadvantages of each.
3. Create an illustration of your family (family tree)
