2.0 TOP AND BOTTOM SHELLS


Top Shell – Heavy banded construction. Top Shell Assembly consists of three
sections bolted together at flanged joints. The top shell is secured to the bottom
shell by a tapered press fit bolted joint. Inside lands are machined for concave fit
up. Upper flange is fitted with jack bolts for top shell / spider joint separation.
Hydraulic separation is available as an added cost option.

Bottom Shell – One (1) piece flared shell design; vertical discharge. Eccentric
bearing hub cast integral with shell and supported by radial arms. Hub machined
for bottom shell bushing, faced for hydraulic cylinder and machined for pinionshaft
housing. Steel arm, hub, and side liners protect shell from wear.

3.0 SPIDER
One (1) piece casting with two arms cast integral with 360o rim and secured to top
of shell by a tapered press fit bolted joint. A cast iron flanged spider bushing,
press fitted to spider hub, transmits the thrust of the main shaft assembly to the
spider. The spider hub bore and spider bushing turn are tapered to facilitate
bushing removal with jack bolts. The bushing bore is of an hourglass design. A
spider vent cover bolted to the hub above the bushing and dual garter spring type oil
seals with scraper ring at lower end provides dust protection. Bushing and sealing
components are serviceable from top end of spider hub. Rim and arm liners are
bolted to spider.

4.0 MAIN SHAFT


One (1) piece forging fully machined with integral head center and large heavy duty
upper journal design. The upper bearing journal is protected with a replaceable alloy
steel sleeve. The lower end of the sleeve is threaded for engagement with self-
tightening head nut. The top end of main shaft is fitted with a permanently attached
eyebolt. The main shaft bottom end is fitted with a polished bronze step bearing.

MAIN SHAFT SLEEVE


An alloy steel sleeve is shrunk over the upper portion of the main shaft, so that the
bearing journal may be easily renewed if it becomes worn or scored.

Our standard main shaft sleeve is threaded on the outer diameter of the lower portion
for mounting the head nut. A clamping ring, secured to the top of the main shaft by
cap screws, bears on the upper rim of the main shaft sleeve to prevent upward
movement due to pressure from the manganese mantle during crusher operation.

Eccentric is cast steel and fitted with a high lead bronze inner bushing. The eccentric
turns within a high lead bronze bottom shell bushing. Counterweight attachment is at
the top of eccentric to reduce dynamic load. Crusher throw is field adjustable by
replacing the inner eccentric bushing.

10.0 BEVEL GEAR AND PINION GEAR


The bevel gear is heat-treated forged alloy steel with machined spiral bevel teeth.
The bevel gear is shrink fitted and keyed to the eccentric. A counterweight is
attached to the gear to counterbalance and reduce the crusher dynamic loads. The
bevel gear rotates on a bronze wear ring.

The pinion gear is case hardened alloy steel with machined spiral bevel teeth. The
pinion gear is shrink fitted and keyed to a machine turned steel pinion shaft.

Consists of an alloy steel washer between a bronze main shaft step bearing and a
bronze piston wearing plate. Drilled and grooved for oil cooling and lubrication. A
powder indicator (patented design) is encapsulated in both bronze pieces to provide
early notification for replacement.

13.0 DUST SEAL RING AND AIR BLOWER


One (1) piece cast urethane with internal steel tube stiffener. The dust seal ring is
enclosed in a steel housing designed to accommodate main shaft movements. An
O-ring provides a positive fit between the dust seal and dust collar. A two (2) piece
design is available to simplify replacement. Internal cavity is closed vented to
lubrication reservoir to provide a positive pressure on the bearing side of dust seal.
Provisions for additional forced air are included.

A low under pressure situation can occur inside the crusher when aerated oil returns
to the oil reservoir and dust can be sucked in from the surrounding. Dust sucked in
will be deposited as a film at the top of the bore of the dust collar. The contaminated
oil will then circulate dirt and stone dust around the lubrication system which will
eventually clog up filters prematurely, increase step bearing wear, and cause
sediment in the oil reservoir. This will in turn subject other internal parts of the
crusher to unnecessary wear and premature failure.

To minimize or eliminate ingress of dirt and stone dust into the crusher lubrication
system a small air blower is provided to equalize the air pressure inside the crusher
and the oil reservoir.

Cast iron pinionshaft housing is bolted to a machined opening in the bottom shell.
Equipped with tapered roller bearings, mounted, and sealed on both ends. Assembly
has easy rotational adjustment provisions for obtaining gear/pinion backlash.

15.0 LUBRICATION ASSEMBLY


The external circulating lubrication system consists of an oil reservoir, motorized gear
pump, a back-up motorized gear pump, dual cartridge type filters, and an air to oil
cooler (water type cooler is optional); mounted and piped on a common skid base.

The lubrication system includes three (3) pressure transmitters, two (2) lubrication
pump discharge and one (1) lubrication skid discharge to be used in conjunction
with the PLC to give lubrication pump outlet pressure of the operating pump and
the differential pressure drop across the operating filter.

The pumping units are equipped with internal bypass relief valves, which are
preset at the factory to protect the system from excessive pressure, which can
occur during cold weather start-ups. The return oil line is equipped with a
temperature transmitter to be used in conjunction with the PLC to shut the crusher
down if the oil temperature rises to an unsafe operating level.

The lubrication system utilizes a dual pump and dual filter arrangement. Selection
of the primary or secondary pumps as well as the primary and secondary filter
assemblies are accomplished through a series of ball valves. All ball valve
positions are monitored through a series of proximity switches, which will inform
the master control system of which pumps or filters are in use. In conjunction with
the pressure transmitters of the lubrication pump and discharge of the lubrication
skid, the master control system can also flag which filter element is clogged and
allow the alternate filter to be used. The dual pump and dual filter arrangement
allows for uninterrupted operation while the unit can be serviced for filter change
out or lubrication pump review. All proximity switches are wired to a junction box
for ease of interface for the customer to a central connection point.

The system also supplies control flow and pressure for the Main Shaft Positioning
(MPS) system. The MPS consist of a bi-directional gear pump feeding a manifold
block, which raises and lowers the Main Shaft assembly. The system utilizes a
10-micron spin on filter element for filtration of the system. The filter is equipped
with a clogged pressure switch indicator. The MPS reservoir is equipped with a
level indicator, which is wired to a transmitter junction box. The junction box
allows the customer to wire all Lubrication and MPS sensors to a remote control
system for monitoring.

15.0 LUBRICATION ASSEMBLY (CONTINUED)


The system is equipped with a split flow assembly which directs the oil flow to two
crusher entry ports, providing an adequate supply of oil for lubricating the step
bearing components, eccentric wear plate, eccentric bearing components as well as
the gear and pinion. The unit consists of two (2) pressure transmitters, and a
temperature transmitter for monitoring lubrication oil pressure to the bottom shell and
the Main Shaft Positioning (MPS) system. Two (2) flow meters with displays in both
gallons and liters per minute (GPM/LPM) are also supplied. These flow meters
are also equipped with transmitters to be used in conjunction with the PLC to shut
down the crusher if either the flow drops to an unsatisfactory operating level or
20% less than the full flow rate. Oil returns from the crusher to the reservoir by
gravitational flow through a single port.

The return oil line temperature transmitter is also used in conjunction with the PLC
to display the return oil temperature. The temperature transmitter is also used as
a switch to turn on and off the lubrication oil heaters and cooler fan motor. All
transmitters and switches are pre-wired using 16 AWG to a terminal strip located in a
NEMA 4 (IP54) enclosure. The motors for the lubrication pumps and Main Shaft
Positioning (MPS) pump as well as the heater assemblies are pre-wired to a junction
box. The junction box is a NEMA 4 (IP54) enclosure. The junction box can be
supplied in a NEMA 4X (IP66) enclosure for maximum environmental protection, at
an additional cost.

Two (2) sediment separators are included separately for installation near each
crusher lubrication inlet port. The lubrication piping between the crusher and the
lubrication system and motor starter is NOT included in our scope of supply. The
pinionshaft bearings and the spider bearing are independently pool lubricated. A site
gauge mounted on the bottom shell near the pinionshaft is use to give a visual
indication of the pinionshaft bearings' lubrication level and also a level transmitter
is used in conjunction with the PLC to provide alarms as needed. The return oil
piping is to be routed back to the oil reservoir. A sieve is mounted inside the oil
reservoir. The spider bearing lubrication level is monitored by a level
sensor/switch mounted inside the spider hub and used in conjunction with the PLC
to provide a low level alarm.

Spider lubrication assembly has an independent power unit assembly, which utilizes
a hydraulic gear pump to actuate a linear barrel pump. The power unit assembly has
a separate relief valve assembly for actuating the barrel pump. The linear pump is
considered to be pumping the lubrication oil to the spider if the power unit pressure is
high. Once the lubrication barrel pump is empty of lubrication oil the pressure will
drop significantly in the hydraulic power unit. The system will trigger an alarm
indicating that the pressure is too low, which means that no lubrication oil is flowing to
the spider assembly.

15.7.4 Analog lubrication oil reservoir level transmitter to monitor oil reservoir
level with control logic to be programmed with a PLC unit. This is in
addition to an existing site gauge.

15.7.7 Split Flow:

15.8 Lubricant Recommendations:
Oil in the re-circulating lubrication system must cool and lubricate the step
bearings, eccentric wearing plate, eccentric bushing, bottom shell bushing,
and the bevel gear and pinion. Since this is a re-circulating system, the oil
used must be light enough so that it can be easily pumped, filtered, cooled,
and returned to the oil reservoir by gravity but heavy enough to properly
lubricate the various components.

RE-CIRCULATING OIL SPECIFICATION


§ Mild extreme pressure gear oil.
§ High stability against oxidation with mild extreme-pressure characteristics.
§ Foaming tendency at a minimum.
§ Timken film strength of 60 minimum.
§ Viscosity index 80 minimum. This must be a natural property of the oil and not
obtained through the use of viscosity index improvers which reduces oil stability.
§ Oil viscosity will depend on oil temperature during operation. If return oil
temperature can be maintained between 100 deg. F (38 deg. C) and 115 deg. F
(46 deg. C), then use an oil with the following viscosity year around:

(ISO VG 68)
- 300 SSU at 100 deg. F (38 deg. C) / 50 SSU at 210 deg. F (99 deg. C)

If operating conditions are such that the return oil temperature cannot be
maintained below 115 deg. F (46 deg. C), then use a slightly heavier oil with the
following viscosity:

(ISO VG 150)
- 750 SSU at 100 deg. F (38 deg. C) / 70 SSU at 210 deg. F (99 deg. C)

16.0 MAIN SHAFT POSITIONING SYSTEM AND SETTING ADJUSTMENT


The Main Shaft Positioning System (MPS) provides hydraulic adjustment of the
main shaft assembly to maintain a constant setting through the normal wear cycle of
the crushing chamber. A hydraulic cylinder assembly, balance cylinder assembly,
and the oil supply unit make up the Main Shaft Positioning System (MPS).

The hydraulic cylinder assembly attaches directly to the bottom of the crusher
bottom shell and supports the main shaft assembly.

The balance cylinder assembly consists of a balance cylinder with pressure gauge
and pressure switch, check valve with orifice and two (2) relief valves connected
to the hydraulic cylinder assembly via flanged pipe assemblies. The purpose of
this assembly is to prevent damage to the crusher step bearing components in the
event of a sudden movement of the main shaft assembly (main shaft jump) which
sometimes occurs in primary crushers.

In conjunction with the pressure gauge(s) on the balance cylinder(s) a pressure


switch has been added to each balance cylinder to send a signal to the PLC to
indicate if the balance cylinder(s) would require re-charging.

The oil supply system consists of an oil reservoir, motorized gear pump, hydraulic
valve, and filter mounted and piped on the lubrication system. The lubrication piping
between the crusher and the oil supply system is by others.

Protective Instrumentation:
§ MPS oil reservoir low level sensor/switch to indicate low oil in the MPS
reservoir with control logic to be programmed with a PLC unit. This is in
addition to an existing site gauge.
§ MPS pressure transmitter mounted in the balance cylinder piping to monitor
MPS system pressure.
§ Plugged MPS filter indicator switch to send a signal to the PLC to indicate
when the MPS filter required to be changed.

The crusher is fitted with a main shaft position sensor probe for indicating the main
shaft position.

17.0 SPIDER LUBRICATION


The dual oil seal spider bearing is designed to use heavy oil as its lubricant. The oil
used should have the same general specifications used in the circulating oil system.
However, in general, an oil with a viscosity of about 2,000 SSU at 100 deg. F (38
deg. C) (ISO VG 460) is most suitable. It may be desirable to use slightly lighter or
heavier oil in the spider bearing depending on the ambient temperature and crusher
operating conditions.

SPIDER LUBRICATION ASSEMBLY
The spider lubrication system consists of a hydraulic barrel pump mounted on a
standard 400 lbs. oil drum (oil drum by others) by means of a standard bung adapter.
A hydraulic power unit driven by a 2.0 HP (1.5 kW) 3 phase TEFC electric motor
(available with either NEMA or IEC frames). The hydraulic power unit is connected
to the barrel pump with two (2) 10 foot (3 m) long hoses with quick disconnect fitting
on the barrel pump end for easy change out of spider bearing lubricant. Also
included is a 65 foot (20 m) long delivery hose assembly to supply the lubricant from
the barrel pump to the fitting on the end of the spider arm. The barrel pump end of
this hose also is supplied with a quick disconnect fitting for easy change out of spider
lubricant.

The spider bearing lubricant level is maintained in the bearing cavity by means of a
level switch and the control logic programmed into the PLC unit. PLC unit by others
unless specified otherwise. A pressure switch on the hydraulic power unit and the
control logic will perform low level indication of the spider lubricant supply barrel.

This system will only provide the necessary amount of oil as determined by the oil
level indicator to insure continuous and proper lubrication to the spider bushing
without overflow.

MAIN SHAFT POSITION INDICATOR
The system consists of a SETICATOR probe assembly and a control cabinet
assembly. The system includes all necessary equipment for installation except for
conduit and external wiring.

The SETICATOR probe assembly is directly attached to the hydraulic cylinder and
includes the SETICATOR transmitter, probe, and fittings for attachment to the
hydraulic cylinder and piston. Whilst operating, variation in the piston's position is
converted to a 4-20 mA signal which is transmitted to the position indicator meter in
the control cabinet.

The control cabinet assembly consists of a NEMA 4 (IP54) cabinet enclosure, a


position indicator meter which displays percent of main shaft travel, main shaft
raise and lower push buttons, and an on/off selector switch; all pre-wired to a
terminal strip. The position indicator meter also directs electrical signals to
activate an audible and visual alarms for high and low main shaft positions. The
audible and visual alarming devices are not included. The meter also provides a
4-20 mA analog output. The system requires a 115V, 50/60Hz, 10 ampere
electrical supply.
