BTME SOLID MECH II CAT THREE: ATTEMPT ALL INDIVIDUALLY:OPTIONAL

AND SUBMITTED TOMMOROW BEFORE 9AM

i. In the figure 1 shown below two copper wires AB and CD support a rigid uniform,
horizontal member BFD, the mass of which is 2 kg. The wire FH is made of steel. The
dimensions shown in figure 1 apply when the member BFD is in position and just before
a body is hung on the end of the steel wire. The wire AB has a cross-sectional area of
1.962 mm2 and both the wires CD and FH have cross-sectional areas of 0.981 mm 2. The
maximum allowable stresses in the copper and steel are 60Mpa and 150Mpa respectively
and the values of Young’s moduli of elasticity are 120Gpa and 208Gpa respectively. The
body is carefully hung on the lower end of the steel wire.
a. Find the maximum mass hung on the lower end of the steel wire.
b. Find the maximum mass of the body so that the allowable stresses will not be exceeded
c. Find the downward displacement of this body.
The masses of the wires may be neglected. Assume 1kgf=9.81N.)

ii. A compound bar consists of two bars of copper, each of rectangular section 30mmX5mm
and a steel bar of rectangular section 30mmX3mm. The three bars are securely fixed
together with the steel bar in the middle thus forming a compound bar of rectangular
section 30 mm wide and 13mm thick. The temperature of the compound bar is then raised
through 140oC and at this temperature; the bar is subjected to steady axial pull. Find
a. The stress in steel and copper bars due to the increase in temperature and
b. The total pull in the bar if the final stress in the steel is 150Mpa.
For steel E=207Gpa and α=11.5X10-6/oC
For copper E=107Gpa and α=17.5X10-6/oC
iii. Two shafts are connected end to end by means of a coupling in which there are 12 bolts,
pitch circle diameter being 250mm. The maximum shear stress is limited to 55 Mpa in
the shafts and 21 Mpa in the bolts. If one shaft is solid, 50mm in diameter, and the other
is hollow, 100 mm external diameter, calculate the internal diameter of the latter and the
bolt diameter so that both shafts and coupling are all equally strong.
