CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

I. Rationale

In the modern world, what we read, watch, and hear in popular

culture has a significant impact on how young people perceive themselves

and their place in society. One standout phenomenon in this cultural

landscape is K-pop, originating from South Korea. Its catchy music,

mesmerizing dance moves, and unique fashion choices have made it a

global sensation, connecting with young individuals from various cultures

and backgrounds.

In the past few years, K-pop has become popular around the world,

attracting millions of fans. Students’ choices for clothing have been greatly

influenced by K-pop culture. A wide variety of music, dancing and fashion

are included in K-pop. Due to its widespread appeal, students’ perceptions

and adoption of fashion trends have been profoundly impacted, especially

in Asian nations like the Philippines.

One of the influences of K-pop to students and teenagers is their

fashion. Students begin follow K-pop fashion. According to Irin Rukmana

(2012) The youth begins to follow the lifestyle of Korean Artist. K-pop idols’

unique styles become fashion inspiration for many students. They

encourage students to be daring with their fashion by mixing different

patterns, textures and accessories, mirroring creative outfits worn by K-

pop idols. Besides clothing students are also interested in K-pop

hairstyles, makeup and business endorse by K-pop stars

K-pop culture strongly impacts students’ fashion preference through

various means. K-pop idols, known for their trendy outfits in music videos

and concert, serve as fashion leaders inspiring students to adopt similar

styles. Social Media platforms like Instagram, Twitter and TikTok amplify

this influence, where students follow idols and engage in fashion discuss-

ions, encouraging the widespread adoption of K-pop inspired fashion

choices. Thus, this study focuses on the influence on K-pop culture on

fashion of students.

Korean Culture

In the realm of social sciences, cultures plays a pivotal role in

shaping societies and individuals. Understanding cultural dynamic is

crucial to comprehending human behavior, traditions and social norms.

According to Zakiah et al., (2019) “Cultures are dynamic and can change

over time due to interactions with other cultures, globalization, and shifts in

people's habits”.

Recently, South Korea has done really well in sharing its popular

culture with other countries. Korean movies, music, fashion, and lifestyle

choices have become popular worldwide. People from different places find

these aspects of Korean culture fascinating. Even how things are made in

Korea grabs the attention of experts and fans everywhere. Many people,

from all kinds of backgrounds, have studied and enjoyed these Korean

cultural elements. This shows how much South Korean culture is liked

worldwide, bringing people from different cultures together and helping

them understand and appreciate each other (Simbar, 2016).

Korean pop Culture

The Korean Wave, or Hallyu, has become a major cultural

phenomenon around the world (Kim &Lee, 2012). According to the article

stated by Roll (2018), over the past few decades. Korean popular culture

has spread infectiously throughout the world. Korean dramas and pop

became popular in China and Taiwan, spreading to Hongkong and other

Asian countries. People loved not only the shows and music but also

Korean cosmetics, fashion and food.

In the Philippines, Korean dramas and K-pop are hugely popular,

especially among Filipino teenagers. These young people have easy

access to Korean entertainment online, where they’re captivated by the

appealing looks of Korean stars and the high-quality visuals in dramas and

music videos. This content fulfills their entertainment cravings with its

enticing visuals and top-notch quality ( Kim, 2015).

Influence on Fashion

According to Korean Wave (2012), Hallyu has significantly

influenced Filipino fashion, changing young people's attitudes and

increasing their desire to follow trends. This cultural impact encourages

Filipino fashion designers to be more creative, producing clothes aligned

with Korean fashion.

According to Raham (2014), the influence of K-pop fashion on

students not only shapes their aesthetic preferences but may also

contribute to increased self-confidence when facing large crowds. This

boost in confidence can be attributed to the sense of identity and

HOPE OF MANITOBA ESSENTIAL ACADEMY,
INC.

Tabangay St., Poblacion East, Rizal, Nueva Ecija

empowerment derived from adopting the stylish and trendy looks inspired

by K-pop culture, fostering a positive impact on how students present

themselves in public settings.

Based on the investigation, most teenagers look stylish in K-pop-

inspired clothes, with vibrant colors complementing their youthful

appearance. The term "ulzzang," translating to "best face" or "good

looking" in English, is popular among K-pop fans , characterizing

individuals esteemed for their distinctive facial features and youthful

charm.

According to Momo the Rose (2020, June 22), teenagers globally

follow the "Ulzzang" fashion trend, drawing inspiration from K-pop idols

who prefer casual attire like oversized t-shirts and tattered jeans. This

creates a laid-back and effortless fashion statement.

As stated in lipstiq.com (2013), K-pop culture attracts students to

Korean fashion through dramas and music videos of their idols, using

endorsements to promote various products. Good-looking men and pretty

girls endorsing fashion also contribute to its appeal, with many students

wanting to emulate K-pop idols' unique style.

There are unique aspects in K-pop that captivate and influence

students, drawing their interest and leaving a lasting impact on

preferences and behavior. The distinctive presentation of mixed patterns

in Korean fashion, as mentioned by Safiah Rahim (2012), sets it apart and

encourages students to embrace uniqueness in their clothing choices,

fostering a sense of individuality. The influence of K-pop culture is far-

reaching, shaping not just clothing choices but also broader cultural

identity of the students.

Statistical Treatment

Conducting a study involves several statistical methods,

encompassing planning, designing, data collection , analysis, drawing

meaningful interpretations, and reporting research findings. According to

Ali and Bhaskar ( 2016), statistical analysis breathes life into seemingly

meaningless numbers, providing significance to the data.

The researchers will apply the formula outlined below to analyze

the data. The mean often used as a measure of central tendency is

emphasized as it ensures that the sum od devations of cases about the

mean is zero ( Paler – Cakmorin, Ph.D.,2017 ). In this research, a

weighted mean is specifically employed to interpret the responses

gathered from the survey questionnaire.

Formula:

Where:

WM = Weighted Mean

WF = Weighted Frequency

Standard Deviation

The most commonly used way to show how spread out information

is, and the most dependable one too is by using a measure of variability.

In this research, the standard deviation was used to find out hoe K-pop

culture influence fashion choices of students.

Formula:

Where:

SD = Standard Deviation
