1 Stoichiometry Part 1

Stoichiometry – Is the study of relative quantities of reactants and products in chemical

reactions.

First step
Balance your equation

N2 (g) + 3H2(g) → 2NH3(g)

This means 1 molecule of nitrogen gas and 3 molecules of hydrogen gas reacts to form
2 molecules of ammonia.

Suppose you want 20 molecules of ammonia, how many molecules of nitrogen do you
need?
1 nitrogen gas X Nitrogen
is to is to
2 ammonia gas 20 molecules of ammonia

X = 10 molecules of nitrogen gas

But The relationship between moles in balanced equation are called mole ratios

The coefficient values are equal to the mole ratios

Therefore the above equation also means:

• 1 mole of nitrogen gas reacts with 3 moles of hydrogen gas to form 2 moles of
ammonia
• Answers are still the same only in moles versus molecules.

ALWAYS FOLLOW THESE for any stiochiometery → Full steps

1. Balance the equation

2. Solve for the moles n=m/M n=N/NA
3. Determine Mole Ratios known to unknown
4. Solve for the unknown mass (m) number or particles (N)
Example # 14 p 300
#14 Calculate the amount of moles of oxygen that is needed to react with 2.4 mol of
ammonia to produce poisonous hydrogen cyanide HCN (g)?

2NH3(g) + 3O2(g) + 2CH4 (g) → 2HCN (g) + 6 H2O(g)

Set up the mol ratio to solve (Known to unknown)

2 mol NH3(g) = 2.4 mol NH3(g)

3 mol O2(g) X mol O2(g)

2X = (3)( 2.4) HWK Read 7.1 pages 296 - 301
