Guidelines : GAS DETECTION BASELINE VALUE FOR OPERATIONAL SYSTEM AT OPEN ATMOSPHERE SPACE.
Scope of Work :

• Prior to perform any opening, replacement parts/accessories e.g., line breaking, filters, strainers etc.
in the open atmosphere space which the running system may have high concentration of hazardous
substance.

• Safe gas measurement to be conducted, monitored and shall be within permissible exposure limit
(PEL) for concentration of substance in the air accordance to Time Weighted Average (TWA) 8 hours.

• Authorized Gas Tester (AGT) : The AGT role as critical position to perform initial Gas Checking on the
open system and ensuring safe working atmospheres, in particular: by interpret the reading of
detected gases, prior to execute job in safe condition.

• Hierarchy of Safety Control Measure for Personal Protective Equipment will be applied depending
hazardous substance present such as but not limited to : Respiratory protection, ventilation system
and or breathing apparatus upon risk assessment conducted.

• NO WORK IS TO BE PERFORMED IF THE READING IS ABOVE PERMISIBLE LEVEL

Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) & Upper Explosive Limit
.
• Lower explosive limit (LEL): The lowest concentration of gas or vapor which will burn
or explode if ignited.

• Upper explosive limit (UEL): the highest concentration of gas or vapor which will burn or explode if ignited.

• Following International Standard : Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), TPSK
Requirements for opening any system parts/accessories shall be below 10% LEL without any spark
generated or ignition source.
% by Volume (CH4) VS % by LEL Range

TPSK Baseline Value For LEL% :

(<10% LEL)

Carbon Monoxide (CO) Level Chart.
• CO atom may be present in the system / released point which contain concentration of Hydrocarbon
without burning. TPSK baseline value for CO is below 50PPM – with 8 hours TWA.

TPSK Baseline Value For CO:

(<50PPM)

Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S)
.
H2S compound may be present in an aggressive chemical contain high concentration of Sulfur. TPSK baseline
value for H2S is below 10 PPM – with 8 hours TWA.

TPSK Baseline Value For H2S PPM :

(<10 PPM)

Oxygen (O2)
.
A sudden deficiency of Oxygen may be occurred if a system is containing continuous Nitrogen purging. O2
minimum Safe Level is 19.5%, while the maximum Safe Level of oxygen should not be over than 23.5%.
In any cases, accurate oxygen level measurement is crucial.

(>19.5% - <23.5%)

When is Gas Detector Bump Test and Calibration Required?
.
TPSK Gas Detector Brand & Type :
1. Honeywell BW™ Micro Clip Series : For Personal Gas Detector.
2. Honeywell BW™ MAX XT II : For Gas Check Measurement.
3. Dräger X-zone® 5500 : Mobile Fenceline Gas Detection unit located at high potential leak point.

• Bump test and or calibration is required when the following is observe / appear :

• Blinking Green indicator light will pop-up if your gas detector is in good working condition and it ready to
use.
